Incident Narrative
An employee was unlocking a digester that had been shut down for maintenance. As he was conducting the unlocking procedure, an automatic valve was in the open position, allowing the digester acid to drain through the drain valves and thereby causing the release of sulfur dioxide. He suffered respiratory irritation from sulfur dioxide exposure and was hospitalized.
