What is a vehicle safety recall?

A vehicle safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determines that a defect in a motor vehicle creates an unreasonable risk to safety, or that the vehicle fails to meet a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Once a recall is issued, the manufacturer is required by federal law (49 U.S.C. ยง 30120) to repair, replace, or refund the vehicle without charge to the owner. The repair obligation lasts at least 15 years from the date the vehicle was first sold, regardless of mileage, ownership history, or warranty status.

The list below contains every recall campaign in NHTSA's official database, over 30,271 campaigns covering tens of millions of individual vehicles dating back to 1966. Each entry includes the official NHTSA campaign number (used to schedule the repair at any franchised dealer), the affected component, the defect description, the consequence of the failure, and the manufacturer's remedy. You can filter by make, model year, or keyword. How to read a recall entry

Each recall card on this page surfaces the four pieces of information that matter most to vehicle owners:

  • Component. The system or part affected by the defect, brakes, airbags, fuel system, electrical, etc. NHTSA uses a standardized component taxonomy.
  • Summary. Plain-English description of the defect and what is expected to fail.
  • Consequence. The actual safety risk, fire, loss of brakes, airbag rupture, sudden stalling. This is the most important field for understanding severity.
  • Remedy. What the dealer will do to fix the vehicle. This tells you how long the repair will take and whether parts are likely to be available.

A small share of recalls, typically less than 3 percent, also carry severity flags such as "Park Outside" or "Do Not Drive." When a recall has one of these flags, NHTSA is recommending that owners take additional precautions until the repair is performed. Park Outside means the defect can ignite a fire even when the vehicle is parked; Do Not Drive means the failure mode is severe enough that NHTSA cannot recommend continuing to operate the vehicle. PLEASURE WAY LEXOR (2021) - FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
Pleasure Way Industries, Ltd (Pleasure Way) is recalling certain 2021-2023 On Tour and Lexor motorhomes, equipped with certain Cummins Onan QG 2800i, and Onan QG 2800i EVAP generator sets. The fuel hose between the inline fuel filter and the injection pump module (IPM) may have inadequate clamp force, possibly resulting in a gasoline leak.

Pleasure Way Industries, Ltd. (Pleasure Way) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Plateau FL, Rekon, Ontour 2.2, Ontour 2.0, Ascent and Tofino motorhomes. The DCF 4 circuit board is labeled for 30 amps, while the pins for the fuse holder are only rated for 20 amps, which can overload the circuit board and cause the fuse or wiring to overheat or melt.

Pleasure Way Industries Ltd. (Pleasure Way) is recalling certain 2019-2021 Tofino motorhomes. The electronic control center circuit board may be damaged from voltages over 18 volts, causing damage to the circuit board.

Pleasure Way Industries Ltd. (Pleasure Way) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Plateau, Plateau XL, Ascent and Lexor motorhomes equipped with a Fiamma F45 Eagle or Fiamma F65 Eagle awning. The awning drive mechanism may fail causing the awning to extend unexpectedly without input from the user.

Consequence: If the awning unexpectedly extends while the vehicle is parked, the awning may hit an occupant within its range, increasing the risk of an injury. If the awning unexpectedly extends while the vehicle is in motion, there is an increased risk of a crash.
Remedy: Pleasure Way will notify owners, and dealers will install straps to keep the awning closed, as a temporary solution, free of charge. Fiamma will provide a permanent solution. PLEASURE-WAY IS RECALLING 127 MY 2007-2008 ASCENT AND PLATEAU CLASS B MOTOR HOMES EQUIPPED WITH A REAR HITCH MOUNT TIRE CARRIER. THESE MOTOR HOMES FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, 'LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT.' THE TIRE CARRIER IMPEDES THE TAIL LIGHT VISIBILITY.
