What is a vehicle safety recall?

A vehicle safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determines that a defect in a motor vehicle creates an unreasonable risk to safety, or that the vehicle fails to meet a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Once a recall is issued, the manufacturer is required by federal law (49 U.S.C. ยง 30120) to repair, replace, or refund the vehicle without charge to the owner. The repair obligation lasts at least 15 years from the date the vehicle was first sold, regardless of mileage, ownership history, or warranty status.

The list below contains every recall campaign in NHTSA's official database, over 30,271 campaigns covering tens of millions of individual vehicles dating back to 1966. Each entry includes the official NHTSA campaign number (used to schedule the repair at any franchised dealer), the affected component, the defect description, the consequence of the failure, and the manufacturer's remedy. You can filter by make, model year, or keyword. How to read a recall entry

Each recall card on this page surfaces the four pieces of information that matter most to vehicle owners:

  • Component. The system or part affected by the defect, brakes, airbags, fuel system, electrical, etc. NHTSA uses a standardized component taxonomy.
  • Summary. Plain-English description of the defect and what is expected to fail.
  • Consequence. The actual safety risk, fire, loss of brakes, airbag rupture, sudden stalling. This is the most important field for understanding severity.
  • Remedy. What the dealer will do to fix the vehicle. This tells you how long the repair will take and whether parts are likely to be available.

A small share of recalls, typically less than 3 percent, also carry severity flags such as "Park Outside" or "Do Not Drive." When a recall has one of these flags, NHTSA is recommending that owners take additional precautions until the repair is performed. Park Outside means the defect can ignite a fire even when the vehicle is parked; Do Not Drive means the failure mode is severe enough that NHTSA cannot recommend continuing to operate the vehicle. ST Engineering Hackney, Inc. (STE Hackney) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Kidron Refrigerated Trailers. The wheel lug nuts may not be tightened properly.

Consequence: Improperly tightened lug nuts may result in a loose or detached wheel, increasing the risk of a crash.

ST Engineering Hackney, Inc. (STE Hackney) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Kidron refrigerated trailers equipped with Tire Pilot Plus tire pressure regulation systems (TPRS). All 8 tires may experience a loss of tire pressure while driving faster than 45 mph.

(STE Hackney) is recalling certain 2011-2021 Kidron refrigerated truck bodies equipped with certain Carrier Transicold refrigeration units, including Supra models 950, 950MT, and 960. The centrifugal clutch may overheat under certain conditions, which can cause it to break apart.

ST Engineering Hackney, Inc. (STE Hackney) is recalling certain 2021-2023 Kidron refrigerated trailers. The suspension pivot bolt may not have been properly tightened during the alignment process on certain Hendrickson suspensions with Quick-Align systems.

Consequence: Improperly tightened pivot bolts may fail, causing the suspension and the attached axle to separate from the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash.

VT Hackney, Inc. (VT Hackney) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Kidron refrigerated trailers, and Hackney Beverage Trailers manufactured February 1, 2014, to June 1, 2016, equipped with certain Bendix SR-5 spring brake valves. These valves may have been improperly machined which may cause a delay of application of the spring brakes while parking.

Consequence: If there is a delay of the spring brake application, the trailer may roll away after it has decoupled from the tractor, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy: VT Hackney will notify owners and any affected SR-5 valves will be replaced by kits ordered from Bendix, free of charge. VT Hackney, Inc. (VT Hackney) is recalling certain model year 2015 Kidron Refrigerated Trailers manufactured April 28, 2015, to April 30, 2015 and equipped with certain Meritor EX225L2 or EX225L+ axles. The affected axle assemblies have caliper bolts that may not have been properly tightened, allowing the caliper mounting bolts to back out and the caliper to detach from the axle flange.

Consequence: If the caliper detaches from the axle flange, braking performance would be reduced, increasing the risk of a crash.

KIDRON IS RECALLING 706 MY 2003-2008 VAN TRAILERS EQUIPPED WITH FIXED SPRING SUSPENSION WITH PINTLE HOOK OPTION INSTALLED. THE SUSPENSION MAY CRACK IN THE G-RAILS IN THE AREA BETWEEN THE PINTLE HOOK BOX ASSEMBLY ATTACHMENT AND THE REAR SPRING HANGER ATTACHMENT.
