FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
Yamaha is recalling certain model year 2009 YW125 (Zuma 125) scooters manufactured between July 2008 and April 2009 due to possible improper clearances in the internal fuel pump components. These improper clearances may cause an inadequate supply of fuel.
Remedy: Yamaha will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump with a newly designed fuel pump. The recall began on February 27, 2013. Owners contact Yamaha at 1-800-962-7926.

I DROVE THE YW125 ABOUT 5 MILES ON A 90 DEGREE DAY AND PARKED AT A STORE. I CAME OUT WITH MY WIFE AS WE BOTH HAVE ZUMA 125S AND HERS STARTED AND MINE DIDN'T. MY NORMAL FUEL PUMP SOUND WAS NOT HAPPENING SO I KNEW IT WAS NOT WORKING. I LET IT ST FOR 40 MINUTES IN THE SHADE AND IT STARTED BACK UP. I GOT IT HOME AND SHUT IT OFF. I TURNED THE KEY ON AND THE PUMP TOOK 2 SECONDS TO START RUNNING. I TESTED MY WIFE'S AND HER PUMP STARTS AS SOON AS YOU TURN THE KEY. AGAIN HERS IS THE EXACT SAME ZUMA 125 SAME YEAR. WHEN IT IS HOT OUT, THE FUEL PUMP STOPS WORKING. THIS HAPPENS ESPECIALLY WHEN IT HAS BEEN SITTING OUTSIDE IN THE SUN. IT WILL INITIALLY START AND THEN, WHEN THE BIKE GETS WARMED UP, IT JUST SHUTS OFF. MY 2009 YAMAHA WY125YL HAS BEGUN TO STALL AND WILL NOT RESTART. I VIEW THIS AS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. PUSHING A MOTORCYCLE FROM A BUSY INTERSECTION WITH FAST MOVING TRAFFIC IS SOMETHING THAT WOULD NOT CARE TO REPEAT. YAMAHA ZUMA FUEL PUMP FAILURE. NOTE YAMAHA ZUMA IS NOT AN OPTION FOR VEHICLE INFORMATION/DESCRIPTION CHOICE. JUST CHOSE 125CC BECAUSE IT WOULDN'T LET ME GO FORWARD WITH COMPLAINT. 1. 2009 YAMAHA ZUMA 125CC: FUEL PUMP FAILURE...SCOOTER ONLY HAS 320 MILES!!! UPON RIDING THE 1ST 3 MILES, THE MOTOR HEATS UP AND THE FUEL PUMP QUITS. WITHOUT NOTICE, THE SCOOTER LOSES ALL POWER AND RAPIDLY DECELERATES AS THE DRIVE BELT DOES NOT DISENGAGE UNTIL BIKE SLOWS TO APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IN CHICAGO TRAFFIC AS NOBODY CARES OR THINKS YOU MIGHT ACTUALLY BE HAVING MECHANICAL ISSUES! NOW YOU ARE STRANDED AND HAVE TO SHUT OFF ALL POWER TO THE SCOOTER AND WAIT FOR IT TO COOL DOWN. THE LONGER YOU WAIT THE FARTHER YOU WILL BE ABLE TO GO...I THINK THIS IS DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF FUEL THAT IS ABLE TO GRAVITY DRIP INTO THE GAS LINES DURING COOLDOWN. AUDIBLY, YOU CAN HEAR THE DECREASED DURATION OF THE FUEL PUMP ENGAGING UNTIL THERE IS ZERO ENGAGEMENT OF THE FUEL PUMP. REPEATING THIS SEQUENCE MIGHT GET YOU ANOTHER 1/2 MILE. NOW, YOU HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO PUSH. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE TO ENCOUNTER IN TRAFFIC AND YAMAHA SHOULD BE EMBARRASSED TO HAVE SUCH ISSUES WITH A $3000 NEW MACHINE. *TR

SEEMS EVERY TIME IT IS 90+ DEGREES OUT THE SCOOTERS FUEL PUMP WILL FAIL AND STRAND ME IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. MY ZUMA 125 SCOOTER WITH AROUND 800 MILES STALLED WHILE I WAS IDLING IN A FAST FOOD DRIVE-THRU ON A DAY WHEN THE TEMPERATURE WAS OVER 90 F AND WOULD NOT RESTART. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART AFTER LETTING THE SCOOTER COOL DOWN FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES IN THE SHADE. THIS SAME ISSUE OCCURRED AGAIN ON ANOTHER HOT DAY AROUND 95 F WHILE I WAS AT A STOP LIGHT ON A BUSY ROAD. AFTER PUSHING MY SCOOTER TO A NEARBY GAS STATION I WAS ABLE TO RESTART AFTER COOLING DOWN THE SCOOTER FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES IN THE SHADE. I AM NOW UNABLE TO START OR KEEP MY SCOOTER RUNNING WHEN IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT ON A HOT DAY AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS ON COOLER DAYS OR IN THE EVENING. I HAVE CALLED LOCAL YAMAHA DEALERS AND THEIR PRIMARY CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THERE ARE NO KNOWN ISSUES. AFTER CHECKING ONLINE FORUMS I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THERE IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THE FUEL PUMP, WHICH YAMAHA HAS SINCE REDESIGNED, YET STILL DOES NOT RECOGNIZE AS THE SAFETY ISSUE THAT IT IS. MY FUEL PUMP ISSUE STILL EXISTS AND I AM UNABLE TO RIDE MY SCOOTER DURING THE DAY. THE FUEL PUMPS ARE ALSO CURRENTLY ON BACKORDER DUE TO THE COMMON FAILURES. *TR

FUEL PUMP INTERMITTENT FAILURE TO FUNCTION IN HOT WEATHER. THIS BECAME A SAFETY HAZARD AS IT BECAME WORSE. THE SCOOTER HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER TWICE BEFORE THE DEALER WAS ABLE TO REPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP AND THAT SEEMS TO HAVE CORRECTED THE PROBLEM SO FAR. THE VEHICLE WILL START UP MOST OF THE TIME AFTER BEING PARKED FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME, BUT AS THE VEHICLE IS BEING USED REGULARLY DURING THE HOTTEST PART OF THE DAY IT WOULD STALL WHILE AT A LOW SPEED OR IDLE. THE PROBLEM GETS WORSE OVER TIME, AND EVENTUALLY IT WILL STALL WHILE AT FULL THROTTLE AND WILL NOT RESTART AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. THE VEHICLE HAS STALLED ON ME ONCE WHILE ON A 45MPH STREET AND ONCE ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY IN THE SLOW LANE WHILE AT GREATER THAN 55MPH. ON THE LATER OCCASION I WAS STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY AND HAD TO PUSH THE VEHICLE ALONG THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP DURING THE NIGHT AFTER SEVERAL FAILED ATTEMPTS TO START IT UP. I HAVE ALSO HAD THE VEHICLE STALL IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSECTION DURING HEAVY TRAFFIC WHILE TAKING A LEFT HAND TURN. I HAD TO WALK THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO PREVENT AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE SINCE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE SERVICE SHOP FOR WARRANTY REPAIR ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM. THEY HAVE REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP, THROTTLE BODY, BATTERY, ECU, AS WELL AS REGULAR MAINTENANCE TO TRY TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM PERSISTS AS OF THIS COMPLAINT AS THE SERVICE SHOP HAS NOT SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED THE VEHICLE. I DO NOT HAVE POSSESSION OF THE OLD PARTS THAT WERE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. VEHICLE'S ENGINE STALLS WHILE RIDING, OR AT IDLE, UNDER NORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS. THIS OCCURS MOST OFTEN WHEN OUTSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE IS ABOVE 85 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT. THE FIRST TIME THE VEHICLE STALLED ( ON OR AROUND 5/15/2010)I WAS STOPPED AT AN INTERSECTION AND WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY. ON OR AROUND 6/18/2010 THE VEHICLE STALLED AGAIN WHILE PULLING AWAY FROM A STOP AT A LEFT TURN SIGNAL. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART AND I HAD TO PUSH IT ACROSS THE INTERSECTION TO AN ADJACENT PARKING LOT. I WAS ABLE TO RE-START THE VEHICLE AFTER LETTING IT SIT FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES. THE THIRD TIME THE VEHICLE STALLED (ON OR AROUND 6/28/2010) I WAS PULLING AWAY FROM A STOP AT AN INTERSECTION OF A MAJOR HIGHWAY. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RE-START, AND I HAD TO PUSH IT ACROSS TWO LANES OF TRAFFIC TO REACH A SIDEWALK. AFTER WAITING APPROXIMATELY FIVE MINUTES THE SCOOTER WOULD NOT RESTART, SO I PROCEEDED TO PUSH IT THE 1/4 MILE TO MY HOME. AFTER PUSHING IT FOR THREE BLOCKS I ATTEMPTED TO RESTART IT, IT STARTED, IDLED POORLY, AND STALLED AGAIN WITHOUT MY HAVING APPLIED ANY THROTTLE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL YAMAHA SERVICE CENTER THE FOLLOWING DAY. THEY RODE AND PERFORMED DIAGNOSTICS ON THE VEHICLE, DETERMINING, ON 7/22/2010, THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS FAULTY AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE STALL WHILE RIDING IN TRAFFIC ( THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN AT THAT FACILITY SINCE 6/29/2010, AND IS STILL IN THEIR POSSESSION) . I AM NOW AWAITING A NEW FUEL PUMP TO ARRIVE FROM YAMAHA. *TR

THIS IS REGARDING A 2009 YAMAHA ZUMA 125 SCOOTER. THERE HAS BEEN A WIDESPREAD ISSUE WITH THE FUEL PUMPS ON THESE BIKES AND MINE FINALLY BROKE DOWN THE OTHER DAY. THE ISSUE IS THAT IF THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE IS HOT ENOUGH IT CAUSES THE FUEL PUMP TO COMPLETELY FAIL. LUCKILY MINE STOPPED WORKING WITH THE BIKE STATIONARY, HOWEVER IT IS COMMON TO HAPPEN WHILE THE BIKE IS MOVING WHICH CAUSES A COMPLETELY DANGEROUS SITUATION. WHEN THE FUEL PUMP FAILS IT IMMEDIATELY CUTS FUEL PRESSURE AND THE MOTORCYCLE WILL TURN OFF IMMEDIATELY. THIS COULD CAUSE A CRASH IF IT WERE TO HAPPEN WHILE GOING AROUND A TURN. YAMAHA IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM, BUT HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL AND DOES NOT CARE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE. *TR
