Volvo Cars USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2001-2007 V70 and XC70 vehicles. The driver's air bag inflator may explode during deployment, due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the driver's air bag, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 14, 2021. Owners may contact Volvo Car customer service at 1-888-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10136.

VOLVO IS RECALLING CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH GARMIN 760 PORTABLE GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS) UNITS BECAUSE THE BATTERIES ON THOSE UNITS MAY OVERHEAT.
Remedy: VOLVO ADVISES OWNERS TO PLEASE STOP USING THE GARMIN PORTABLE GPS DEVICE IMMEDIATELY, AND VISIT THE GARMIN WEBSITE TO DETERMINE IF THEIR UNIT IS AFFECTED. I own a 2004 Volvo XC70 that is experiencing the same fuel pump defect described in Recall R220 / NHTSA Campaign 09V483000 (fuel pump leak). My vehicle exhibits fuel system problems consistent with the recall description. However, my VIN is not included in the current recall population. When I contacted Volvo, I was told my case (ID #250827-000998) was escalated to corporate, but I was later informed that no goodwill assistance would be provided because my VIN is not covered. I specifically requested written confirmation of this determination. This defect poses a safety risk that aligns with the existing recall, and I believe additional vehicles outside the current VIN range may be affected. I am requesting that NHTSA review whether the recall should be expanded to include vehicles like mine.

Faulty fuel pump causing leakage
I received a recall notice for the defective driver airbag. The nearest dealership is 10 hours away. I called Customer care and they said I would be responsible to transport my Volvo to the dealership in Billings Montana. The vehicle is a 2004 Volvo with 188k miles. Expense and travel is prohibitive to me. I am on a fixed income and I would worry about making a 20hr round trip in an older car. My desire is to gift this car to my granddaughter when she gets her driver's lic. I could not forgive myself if the driver's airbag deployed and the result could be serious injury or death. I contacted the Volvo Customer Care service and they said they could transport the car one way. can you help?
I've been waiting for a recall repair (Recall R10136: Driver Airbag) for 5 months and a local Volvo dealer said that they haven't received necessary parts for months. This is a matter of safety and Volvo should prioritize safety. First appointment with the local dealer was Jan 14 that was canceled by the dealer due to part shortage. Second appointment was on June 15 and it was canceled again by the dealer for the same reason.

Fuel pump seal leak/ flange broke. Smelled gas, saw a puddle under the car. Upon fuel pump inspection a failed repair combined with original broken seal flange. We live in a state where the recall was not listed so our next step is to contact volvo.
I requested Danbury, CT Volvo to have the repairs done as per the recall notice on Jan 25 and was told the parts required are on back order and they do not know when the parts will be in. I would like to know if I am in danger by continuing to use the car before the repair can b made. THE CONTACT THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE TO JIM FISHER VOLVO (2108 W BURNSIDE ST, PORTLAND, OR 97210) WHERE HE WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER RECALL. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT HE HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR THE REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED A DISCOUNT TOWARDS THE REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 200,000.

ALTHOUGH THE 'CRACKED FUEL PUMP FLANGE' RECALL SERVICE (VOLVO RECALL R220, NHTSA 09V-483) WAS PREVIOUSLY PERFORMED ON MY VEHICLE, THE VOLVO XC70 HAS AN ADDITIONAL 'FUEL SENDING UNIT' ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE CAR. THIS ADDITIONAL FUEL COMPONENT HAS A SIMILARLY FORMED FLANGE WHICH ALSO DEVELOPS A CRACK. EVEN THOUGH THE UNITS ARE SIMILARLY COMPOSED AND BOTH IN THE SAME ENVIRONMENT, I HAVE BEEN TOLD THE AUXILIARY FUEL SENDING UNIT IS NOT COVERED UNDER VOLVO RECALL 220. EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN THE FUEL PUMP RECALL, THE CRACK IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE FUEL SENDING UNIT ALLOWS GASOLINE TO CONSTANTLY OOZE THROUGH THE CRACK AND SLOWLY POUR ONTO THE GROUND AND PUDDLE. THIS IS ODDLY ARBITRARY CONSIDERING CARS CAN BE MOVED AROUND AND WARM WEATHER ISN'T EXCLUSIVE TO ANY SPECIFIC LOCATION. AFTER MECHANIC RESET CODES, HE STATED THAT IT MIGHT BE THE ECM OR TCM. I SENT OFF THE ECM FOR DIAGNOSIS AND IT CAME BACK WITHOUT ANY ERRORS. I THEN SENT OFF THE TCM AND LEARNED THAT IT NEEDED REPAIR. AFTER RECEIVING THE REPAIRED TCM UNIT, WE RE-INSTALLED AND CAR DROVE FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS. I TOOK THE CAR FOR A 6-HOUR ROUND TRIP DRIVE THIS PAST WEEKEND AND HAD ONE INCIDENT OF THE JERKING, BUT WITHOUT ANY OTHER ISSUES. AFTER LETTING THE CAR SIT IN THE DRIVE FOR AROUND 20 MINUTES, I TRIED STARTING IT ONLY TO GET ANOTHER "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT AND INOPERABLE DASH INDICATORS (SPEEDOMETER, ODOMETER, TURN SIGNALS, ETC.). TOOK THE CAR TO A VOLVO DEALERSHIP TODAY FOR A DIAGNOSIS. THEY STATED THAT THERE WAS NO CONTACT OCCURRING WITH THEIR COMPUTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. THE CAR LOCKS BY ITSELF AUTOMATICALLY WHEN KEY IS IN IGNITION AND YOU STEP AWAY FROM CAR LEAVING YOU LOCKED OUT. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER, THIS IS A "FEATURE" OF THIS CAR. AMONG ALL THE CARS I HAVE OWNED AND DRIVEN THIS IS THE ONLY THAT DOES THIS, VOLVO NEEDS TO CORRECT HIS ISSUE.
STARTED SMELLING GASOLINE WHEN DRIVING, AND NOTED DRIPPING UNDER GAS TANK WHEN PARKED. I REMOVED THE FUEL PUMP COVER IN THE FLOORBOARD, AND THERE IS A LEAK IN THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP, THAT DRIPS CONSTANTLY WHILE THE IGNITION IS ON. THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED BEFORE, BUT MY VIN IS NOT LISTED AS ONE OF THE USUAL SUSPECTS.

I SMELLED GASOLINE FUMES IN CAR WHEN THE CAR WAS IN MOTION, ON A CITY STREET, AND IMMEDIATELY TOOK CAR TO MY VOLVO MECHANIC. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS A CRACKED FUEL PUMP. COST ME $723.55 OUT OF POCKET TO REPAIR. BOUGHT THE CAR ON 02/14/2015 AND THIS REPAIR WAS ON 09/24/2015; JUST OVER SEVEN MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP! I RESEARCHED, AND SAW THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE, AND CALLED VOLVO ABOUT IT. VOLVO SAID THEY WOULD NOT HONOR RECALL NOTICE ON MY CAR BECAUSE I WAS NOT LOCATED IN ONE OF THE STATES SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL NOTICE. TOTALLY UNFAIR!! OBVIOUSLY, THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED IN MY VOLVO IN THE STATE OF COLORADO, WHICH HAS TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS FROM BELOW 0DEG F TO OVER 95DEG F THROUGHOUT THE SEASONS. I HAVE HAD THE SAME FAILURE 3 TIMES WITH THIS CAR. STARTED CAR UP AFTER IT WAS SITTING IN PARKING LOT ON A VERY HOT DAY. WITHIN 1-2 MILES STARTED EXPERIENCING INABILITY TO ROLL WINDOWS UP OR DOWN, CAR STARTED LOSING POWER AND INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL WENT BLANK. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR SAFETY OFF THE ROAD. IT WOULD NOT START UNTIL THE NEXT MORNING. IT HAS BEEN TOWED TWICE. THE LAST TIME TO A VOLVO DEALER WHO COULD NOT REPLICATE THE FAILURE; NO CODES WERE STORED OR FOUND. THE CAR IS BACK TO RUNNING GREAT...UNTIL THE NEXT TIME IT DIES.
I HAVE BEEN BRING MY CAR TO A VOLVO DEALER IN MY AREA FOR ABOUT 6 YEARS. I THOUGHT THAT I COULD TRUST THEM. STARTING IN 2014 I NOTICED THAT THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT WOULD APPEAR WHEN DRIVING DURING WET CONDITIONS AND IF I HIT A POTHOLE OF WHICH WE HAVE MANY HERE. I TOLD THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT THIS ON TO 2 DIFFERENT VISITS. BOTH TIMES THEY SAID THEIR WAS NO PROBLEM. WHEN I TOOK MY CAR TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP FOR A SECOND OPTION FOR AN ALTOGETHER DIFFERENT ISSUE, IT WAS DISCOVERED DURING A TEST DRIVE BY THE LEAD MECHANIC THAT MY CAR WAS NOT DRIVING IN AWD. THAT VOLVO DEALERSHIP AND THEIR MECHANICS PUT, ME AND MY FAMILY IN DANGER. UNFORGIVABLE. THIS ISSUE(S) OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING (IN MOTION) IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AS I LIVE IN A LARGE CITY AND WITH ELDERLY PASSENGERS AS I WAS A VOLUNTEER DRIVER FOR THE ELDERLY.
THE SIDE REAR L/R BRAKE LIGHTS STAY ON ALL THE TIME CAUSING A SAFETY CONCERN, THE TOP CENTER LED BRAKE LIGHT CONTINUES TO WORK NORMALLY. TAPPING ON THE BRAKE LIGHT RELAYS INSTALLED IN THE REAR ELECTRONIC MODULE CAUSES THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO SHUT OFF. "RECALL CAMPAIGN NO.131 BRAKE LIGHT RELAY" NEEDS TO BE APPLIED TO 2004 MODELS AS WELL.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE CENTRAL ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO, I SUSPECTED FUEL LEAK IN MY CAR. IT IS GARAGED. I DID NOT TAKE IT SERIOUSLY AS IT WAS ON AND OFF - AT LEAST IN MY DETECTION. I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC ANYWAY - AND HE PERFORMED INSPECTIONS AND "TIGHTENED RETAINING RING FOR LEFT SIDE SENDER" AND ASKED ME TO "WATCH" FOR ANY FURTHER INCIDENTS. ON TUESDAY THIS WEEK I FILLED GLASS TO THE BRIM IN HOPES OF KNOWING MORE ABOUT THIS LEAK ISSUE AND LEFT IN MY GARAGE OVERNIGHT. ON WEDNESDAY MORNING WHEN I OPENED MY GARAGE DOOR TO LEAVE TO WORK, THE FUEL STENCH WAS INTENSE. I MOVED MY CAR OUT FROM MY GARAGE AND NOTICED A SMALL PUDDLE OF FUEL ON THE DRIVER SIDE REAR. WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING THE RISK I WAS GETTING INTO, I DROVE THE CAR TO WORK - LUCKILY WITH NO INCIDENTS. CALLED MY MECHANIC AND HE RIGHTFULLY SUGGESTED ME TO TOW IT TO HIS SHOP - WHICH I DID. HE CALLED LATER AND SAID THAT I HAVE A HAIRLINE LEAK ON THE "SENDER LINE" AND I NEED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FUEL PUMP UNIT - AND SAID IT WOULD COST ME $880 [L&P] - OF COURSE, WITH VOLVO PARTS. I JUST COMPLETED IT THIS MORNING - AND JUST HAVE DRIVEN MY CAR OUT FROM THE SHOP [HE REPLACED JUST THE DRIVER SIDE FUEL SENDER UNIT - AT A COST ~$575]. BACK HOME, I WAS RESEARCHING AND CAME ACROSS A RECALL NOTICE FROM VOLVO FOR THIS SAME ISSUE. UNFORTUNATELY I DID NOT GET ANY NOTICE OF THIS RECALL - BUT WAS TOLD BY THE VOLVO REP [WHEN I CALLED THEM] THAT THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN ADDRESSED ON MY CAR EARLIER DURING A REGULAR DEALER INSPECTION. SHE ASKED ME TO FILE MY CASE AGAIN - AND CURRENTLY AWAITING A RESPONSE FROM VOLVO. I AM DISAPPOINTED - NOT MUCH ABOUT THE COST BUT THE RISK THAT I PUT MYSELF AND MY FAMILY INTO - WITHOUT KNOWING OR BEING AWARE OF THIS RECALL NOTICE. I WAS DRIVING ALONG THE HIGHWAY AND SUDDENLY MY CAR JUST QUIT RUNNING...IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY HIGHWAY...I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO...2 NICE MEN PUSHED ME OVER INTO THE TURN LANE TO BE OUT OF THE ROAD...MY WINDOWS WORKED, LIGHTS AND SO I KNEW IT WASN'T THE BATTERY...IT JUST WOULDN'T START....ACTUALLY THIS HAD HAPPENED A COUPLE OF WEEKS BEFORE, HOWEVER, AFTER LETTING IT SIT ABOUT 5 MIN. IT STARTED UP AND I WAS ABLE TO GET HOME...I THOUGHT MAYBE IT OVERHEATED BUT NONE OF THE WARNINGS WENT ON...SO I IGNORED IT AND WISH I WOULDN'T HAVE AS WE HAD TO LEAVE MY CAR IN A VACANT LOT OFF THE HIGHWAY FOR TWO DAYS AS IT WAS THE 4TH OF JULY HOLIDAY AND NO ONE WAS WORKING...WE WENT BACK TO CHECK TO SEE IT ON JULY 5, AND IT STARTED UP...AS I WAS DRIVING HOME (JULY 5)SUNDAY...IT QUIT AGAIN AT A STOP SIGN WHERE I HAD NO PLACE TO TURN OFF...OF COURSE, THE STEERING LOCKED WHEN THE CAR STOPPED...IT WAS SCARY...I THEN WAITED FOR ABOUT 5 MIN. AND IT TURNED OVER AND STARTED AGAIN...I DROVE FAST TO GET HOME (ABOUT 4-5 MILES) AND MADE IT HOME...SO RELIEVED AS IT IS VERY SCARY TO BE STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY HIGHWAY AND ROAD. LUCKILY MY HUSBAND WAS FOLLOWING ME SO I WASN'T ALONE...I AM OVER 65...I LIKE MY CAR BUT CAN'T BE BURDENED WITH A PROBLEM LIKE THIS...

THERE WAS A RECALL FOR 2001-2005 XC70'S (JAN. 2010) WHERE THE FUEL PUMP CAN DEVELOP CRACKS IN THE FLANGE WHEN EXPOSED TO HOT TEMPS AND (THERMAL CYCLING) COMBINED WITH VARYING FUEL GRADES. CHECKED WITH THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD CONNECTICUT WAS NOT ONE OF THE STATES COVERED BY THIS RECALL. WHY NOT AND HAVE THERE BEEN OTHER COMPLAINTS FROM STATES NOT COVERED IN THE ORIGINAL RECALL.
