MY DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED WITHOUT ANY WARNING ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19,2019. I WAS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY ACCIDENT OR COLLISION. THE VEHICLE WAS ALREADY IN THE PARK POSITION AND THE MOTOR SHUTOFF. I WAS PULLING INTO MY DRIVEWAY WITH MY SON AND BEFOREI COULD REMOVE MY KEYS FROM THE IGNITION AND EXIT MY TRUCK, THE AIRBAG DEPLOYED, SMACKING ME DIRECTLY IN MY FACE. IM SURE THIS WAS DUE TO A MALFUNCTION OF SOME KIND BECAUSE IVE BEEN OWNING THIS VEHICLE SINCE 1996 AND THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED. NORMALLY IF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOY THE ENGINE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO START BUT IN THIS SITUATION MY MOTOR STILL TURNS ON BUT ITS UNSAFE TO EVEN DRIVE AROUND WITH THE DEPLOYED AIRBAG DANGLING FROM THE CENTER OF THE STEERING WHEEL HOW IT IS. I USE THIS CAR EVERYDAY FOR WORK BUT NOW IM IMMOBILE DUE TO THIS. LUCKILY I DIDNT SUFFER ANY BODILY INJURIES MORE THAN PUFFINESS ON THE LEFTSIDE OF MY FACE AND REDNESS FROM THE IMPACT. I HAD MY VEHICLE IN FOR AN EXHAUST RATTLE AS WELL AS AN OIL CHANGE TODAY TO MY LOCAL INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC, NOTING HOW ROTTED OUT THE FRAME WAS IN THE REAR AS WELL AS FRONT, RECOMMENDED THAT I NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE ANY LONGER. THE SHOP DIDN'T DO ANY SERVICE WORK DUE TO THE CONDITION OF THE VEHICLE. KNOWING THAT TOYOTA DID A RECALL ON A SIMILAR TRUCK MODEL OF THE SAME VINTAGE, I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE NEARBY TOYOTA DEALER WHERE I ASKED THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO DO AN ASSESSMENT OF THE VEHICLE. I THOUGHT TOYOTA COULD THEN BETTER UNDERSTAND WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH ONE OF THEIR PRODUCTS. THE SERVICE MANAGER WAS RATHER RUDE AND SAID THE WARRANTY ON THE TRUCK HAD EXPIRED AFTER THREE YEARS AND THAT IF I WANTED AN INSPECTION, I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. I AM SHOCKED THAT WHAT I HAD THOUGHT WAS A PERFECTLY GOOD USABLE VEHICLE HAS NOW BECOME A SAFETY HAZARD TO MYSELF AND OTHERS ON THE ROAD. SUDDENLY, THERE WAS AN UNINTENDED VEHICLE ACCELERATION ABOVE THE SET SPEED. THE BRAKE PEDAL REQUIRED GREATER FORCE. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLES STOPPING DISTANCE WAS INCREASED WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS. THE FAILURES OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE AUTHORIZED DEALER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 96E001000, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL IS RELATED TO THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS EXCLUDED FROM THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED FOR THE MALFUNCTION. THE CONTACT IS AWARE OF THE SAFETY RISK INVOLVED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 81,000.

I AM AWARE OF A PROBLEM TOYOTA HAD WITH THE TACOMA MODEL YEARS 1995 THROUGH 2000 WITH WEAK FRAMES. MY QUESTION IS COULD THE T100 BE AFFECTED AS WELL? I HAVE A 1996 T100 WHICH RECENTLY HAD A REAR BODY MOUNT DISINTEGRATE. AS MY MECHANIC WAS FIXING THE PROBLEM, HE WAS GRASPING THE FRAME AND ACTUALLY PUT A 3" TO 4" HOLE IN THE FRAME WITH JUST HIS FINGERS. HE HAD TO WELD A PATCH OVER THE HOLE AND COMMENTED THAT FOR ONLY 12 YEARS OLD, THE FRAME LOOKED TERRIBLE. HE DID NOT WANT TO TRY ANY OTHER PARTS OF THE FRAME FOR FEAR THAT HE WOULD CAUSE MORE HOLES. I WAS WONDERING IF THIS WAS HAPPENING TO OTHER OWNERS OF T100S IN THE SAME TIME FRAME AS THE TACOMA RECALL. COULD THIS FRAME FAIL WHILE DRIVING CAUSING A POTENTIAL ACCIDENT? *TR
CLUTCH MOUNTING BRACKET IS WEAK AND CAUSES BREAKAGE , THEN BREAKS FIRE WALL. HAVE REPAIRED IT 4 TIMES NOW. *TR
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHEN AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WORKED ON THE VEHICLE, THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING SHAFT. SHORTLY AFTER THE REPAIR WORK, THE STEERING SHAFT FRACTURED AT THE PITMAN ARM WHILE DRIVING 4 MPH IN A PARKING LOT. THE SERVICE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED.
SEAT BELT TENSIONER TOO WEAK AND ALLOWS SEAT BELT TO HANG LOOSE ONCE BUCKLED. UNWARY DRIVER CLOSES DOOR AND A LOOP OF SEAT BELT HANGS OUTSIDE VEHICLE. COULD RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC RESULTS IN CRASH. NOT UNCOMMON FOR ME TO SEE OTHER T100 PICKUPS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WITH A LOOP OF BELT VISIBLE OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. *NM
HEARD A LOUD RATTLE IN ENGINE. DISASSEMBLY DISCOVERED BROKEN HEAD OF CONNECTING ROD BOLT. RESULTED IN DAMAGE TO CONNECTING ROD BEARING; REQUIRES ENGINE OVERHAUL AND PISTON/ CONNECTING ROD REPLACEMENT. EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE. *NM
I PURCHASED FOUR NEW TIRES 08-02-05 FROM HOGAN AND SONS IN VIRGINIA, 9580 MAIN ST FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA (703) 323-1044. PRODUCT GOODYEAR, TIRES DUNLOP, PRODUCT CODE 263-012-493-0. THE FIRST TIRE WENT COMPLETELY FLAT WITH NO SIGNS OF CAUSE IN JAN 06, THE TIRE WAS REPLACED UNDER ROAD HAZARD WARRANTY. I EXPRESSED MY CONCERN TO THE COMPANY WHERE I PURCHASED THE TIRES AND ALSO HAD IT REPLACED THAT THE TIRES MAY BE DEFECTIVE. I WAS TOLD IT WAS NOT DEFECTIVE. IN APRIL 06 ANOTHER OF THE DUNLOP TIRES FROM THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE WENT COMPLETELY FLAT. I RETURNED THE TIRE TO A GOODYEAR AND AGAIN EXPRESSED CONCERNS THAT THE ORIGINAL SET OF TIRES MAY HAVE BEEN DEFECTIVE. I WAS TOLD THEY WERE NOT DEFECTIVE AND PAID FOR A NEW TIRE, OF THE SAME BRAND AND PRODUCT CODE DUNLOP. I PURCHASED A NEW TIRE AT HOGAN AND SONS 4/21/06 TO REPLACE THE SPARE ALSO A DUNLOP WITH SAME PRODUCT CODE. ON 07-19-06 ANOTHER OF THE DUNLOP TIRES, THE NEWER REPLACED TIRES WENT COMPLETELY FLAT WITH NO SIGNS OF DAMAGE FROM AN EXTERNAL CAUSE. I TELEPHONED HOGAN AND SONS WHO ALSO STATED THEY WERE AFFILIATED WITH GOODYEAR, THAT NOW A THIRD TIRE HAD GONE COMPLETELY FLAT AND I WAS CONCERNED THAT THERE IS SOME DEFECT IN THESE TIRES. AT THIS TIME I AM FILING A COMPLAINT THAT THE ENTIRE SET OF TIRES BE REPLACED WITH ANOTHER BRAND OF EQUAL PRICE TIRES. THE TIRES GOING SUDDENLY FLAT HAVE PLACED BOTH ME AND THOSE DRIVING AROUND ME IN DANGER ON THE ROAD. *NM

(1) WHILE BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, I HEARD A NOISE LIKE A POP. I THOUGHT SOMEONE MIGHT HAVE BEEN WALKING BEHIND ME AND THUMPED MY TRUCK TO LET ME KNOW THEY WERE THERE. APPROXIMATELY TWO MILES DOWN THE ROAD MY VEHICLE STARTED TO VEER OFF THE ROAD. THE STEERING WHEEL TURNED UNUSUALLY FREELY, BUT THERE WAS NO CHANGE IN THE DIRECTION I WAS MOVING. I WAS MOVING ACROSS THE OPPOSITE LANE OF THE ROAD, AND HEADING FOR A HILL, SO I USED MY BRAKES TO STOP THE VEHICLE. AFTER STOPPING THE VEHICLE I GOT OUTSIDE AND WATCHED THE FRONT WHEEL ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE, WHILE I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL. BOTH FRONT WHEELS WERE FREE OF ANY CONNECTION TO THE STEERING WHEEL! (2) THE CAUSE OF THE LOSS OF STEERING ABILITY WAS A BROKEN STEERING RELAY ROD. IT BROKE AT A POINT CLOSE TO THE POWER STEERING BOX, IN THE SAME PLACE THAT OTHER STEERING RELAY RODS ON VEHICLES SIMILAR TO MINE HAVE BROKEN. THE FAILURE OF THE STEERING RELAY ROD WAS DUE TO DEFECTIVE DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE OF THE PART, AS PROVEN BY THE DIFFERENCE IN ROCKWELL HARNESS FROM ONE SIDE OF THE ROD TO THE OTHER,(ROCKWELL HARDNESS OF 31 ON ONE SIDE, AND 13 ON THE OTHER SIDE), AT THE BREAK. THE CONSEQUENCES WERE; A. THE VEHICLE COULD NO LONGER BE DRIVEN, BECAUSE IT COULD NOT BE STEERED AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP. B. I WAS VERY FRIGHTENED WHEN I FOUND I COULDN'T STEER MY VEHICLE, WHICH WAS HEADED FOR A HILL. C. I AM WORRIED THAT OTHER DRIVERS OF VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THIS PART MAY UNEXPECTEDLY LOOSE STEERING CONTROL OF THEIR VEHICLE, CAUSING GREAT BODILY INJURY, INCLUDING DEATH. E. I HAVE LOST CONFIDENCE WITH TOYOTA, BECAUSE THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE REPRESENTATIVE WHO TOOK MY REPORT SAID THAT THEY HAD NO HISTORY OF PROBLEMS WITH THIS PART, YET THREE SIMILAR INSTANCES HAVE BEEN FILED WITH NHTSA. NAR 1/15/2003. THE FRONT STEERING ROD FAILED WHILE DRIVING AT A LOW SPEED. THE PART SHOWED EVIDENCE OF A LONG TERM DEFECT, THERE WAS A HALF MOON CRACK WITH OLD RUST DEPOSITS. *JB
SUDDEN BREAK IN CLUTCH SUPPORT BRACKET. CAUSED VEHICLE TO SUDDENLY MOVE WITHOUT ABILITY TO CONTROL. THE BREAKAGE OF THIS BRACKET WAS CAUSED BY A DESIGN DEFECT, AND NOT BY USE OR LACK OF MAINTAINANCE. DEALER'S SERVICE MANAGER ADMITTED THAT THIS BRACKET NEVER SHOULD HAVE BROKEN. HAVE DETAILED PHOTOS AND THE ORIGINAL BROKEN PART. THE NEW PART HAS BEEN REDESIGNED, BUT DEALER SAYS MANUFACTURER HAS TOLD THEM NOTHING ABOUT ANY ONGOING PROBLEMS. *AK
