2009 PONTIAC G6 Recalls, Complaints & Safety

The failure became more persistent over time, and several attempts were needed for the power steering feature to become operable. The vehicle was taken to Auto Zone to be diagnosed, and it was determined that the vehicle had experienced Mass Air Flow Sensor, Power Train System, Catalytic Converter Efficiency, ABS, Wheel Speed Sensor, Wheel Hub, Wheel Bearing, and TPMS failures. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact researched online and became aware of several recalls related to the year, make, and model vehicle; however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 107,737

The contact owns a 2009 Pontiac G6. While driving 20 MPH or slower, the power steering assist failed to operate as needed, making it difficult to maneuver the vehicle. The vehicle was turned off and restarted for the power steering assist to become operational. The power steering assist warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,800.

The power steering keeps going out causing turning to become incredibly hard. This started in Dec of 2025. I replaced the column in 2022 because of the same issues and it is happening again now. I see some 2009 VINS have been recalled but my vin isn’t apart of that.

Vehicle looses power steering sometimes, the last time I was in traffic on a bend and went up onto the sidewalk. It's almost impossible to steer when it happens.

There is an immediate loss of steering while driving a 2009 Pontiac G6. The steering wheel locks up making it difficult, at times impossible, to steer the vehicle left or right. The only way to unlock the steering wheel is by placing the vehicle in 'Park' and turn the ignition off to restart the vehicle.

My brake lights are malfunctioning. It has not worked correctly in years. When you press on the brake, the brake lights turn itself off. When not pressing on the brake, my brake lights are on. I reached out to the GM dealership and I told them that the recall was fixed, but the issue is ongoing and poses extreme safety issues. I have gotten pulled over for this. No lights are on my dashboard. I have owned the car since the beginning of COVID and the issue has happened since.

I purchased a used 2009 Pontiac G6 3.9L almost 4 years ago. I have experienced white smoke pouring from under my hood 3 times so far. I've taken it to the dealership and first time was informed it was a bad power steering hose leaking onto the exhaust- preCat area. The second repair dealership said it was a faulty hose. The third time dealer said it was a bad motor mount. After extensive research online, found out several years of G6 cars have the high pressure power steering hose about 1 inch from the exhaust pipe. This is causing the hose to melt due to the heat. GMC started making heat protective wrap around these hoses which still does not solve the problem-still burns thru. With a simple online search 2006-2010 G6 with the v-6 engines are still having this problem, costing owners money/time and safety issues. When I saw the white smoke, I lost my power stearing, causing panic and difficult steering. GM should have a recall, find a permanent solution where owners/family can feel safer. Most of these cars have low miles considering the age- Are owners afraid to drive the car due to the power steering hoses and exhaust being too close. Causing more concern for safety, and the costs for repairs and tow trucks.

The drivetrain: automatic transmission parking lock cable (or shift cable) malfunctioned. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. I am able to put the car in 'park' and remove the key. However, when I attempt to start the vehicle, it won't start because the battery gets drained. I have to constantly get a jump off. My safety and the safety of others are at risk because I never know how much the battery has been drained, and the vehicle shuts off in trafffic. The problem has been confirmed by an independent service center. The vehicle has only been inspected by an independent service center. There have been no warning signs of the problem before shutting off or not starting. The vehicle was purchased in 2019, and the first occurrence was the same year. We knew something was draining the battery. We just did not know what. So we would not let the vehicle sit for more than a day without starting it, and we would always be prepared to charge the battery.

The power steering warning flashed on the radio and immediately the car was not controllable the car was stopped and restared and clicks now when turning the wheel but hasnt been driven becauseofthe steering and there are multiple recalls for this but this specific vin number is not included but has the eps that is referred to because it has a 2.4 l engine which only comes with eps

Timing Chain making noise...voltage fluctuations throughout all the car...cruise control will shut off if I got to use wipers or blinkers or even turn on the air system and lights will dim if you use power windows or have the radio up loud.

The vehicle was taken to the residence; however, the failure recurred while driving at various speeds. The contact stated that only after restarting the vehicle with the steering wheel turned, the steering wheel would turn without difficulty for a short while, causing the contact to restart the vehicle with the steering wheel turned several times. The contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V153000 (Steering), however, the VIN was not included. The dealer was contacted and confirmed that the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the recall had expired. The failure mileage was approximately 189,000.

I was driving down the road around 25 miles per hour and I heard a beep like a chime and then power steering went out making it very hard to control the vehicle. Power steering was flashing on the dashboard. Turn vehicle off then back on it was fine and then a mile down the road done it again

Power steering goes out when it wants to, will go back on if you turn the car on and off , my safety for me and my daughter was at risk I couldn’t stop to turn it on and off because I wasn’t at a red light , it has not been inspected but it seems like the problem is we’ll known ,theirs a warning message that will pop up on the radio that you can’t hear go on or see until it’s to late

The Body Control Module (BCM) Part number 20943341 malfunctioned. Tried to replace the part at the dealership and was told that the part is no longer being manufactured. Eventually found a new part on eBay and was told by the dealership that they could not re-program the BCM computer. The car is undriveable.

Strong fuel smell from rear of Pontiac G6 near fuel tank. This is a common problem due to a cracked elbow on top of the fuel pump. This issue is happening among all G6 models from 05 to 09 . This issue should be recalled as it is dangerous to the drivers , passengers or anyone that comes within 3 ft of Pontiacs that have this issue. Fuel odor can be smelt from further than 3ft that can damage to lungs, throat and multiple other health hazards. The fumes can reach even further witch is easily ignited if someone were to walk by with a cigarette This issue is common in 75% of Pontiac G6's on the road This defective part should be placed on recall and should definitely be looked into before someone loses their lives over an easily preventable occurrence from happening. Headlights are burning, melting and charged connections and causing dim lights. These headlights were recently replaced with new OEM healing’s for the second time and each replacement is burning out the connection. Please advise?

My eps keeps going in and out causing steering to be lost .loss of steering .I don't know.as the issue happened there was a display on radio said power steering,service traction control

The contact stated initially four studs fractured on the front passenger’s side wheel. On two separate instances, several studs had detached from the front driver’s side, and on the driver’s and passenger’s rear wheels. The contact had towed the vehicle to the dealer where the lug nuts were replaced; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The car steering wheel gets super loose over bumps. The car shuts off at anytime when driving. I got it check, there’s a unknown problem with electrical system

I have had this car since 2018 and the exterior lighting has been giving me trouble ever since I first got the car. The biggest problem is my headlights. They were first going out every 2-3 months so I kept replacing the bulb. Now it is much worst. I have had various mechanics, family, and friends maintenance the car over the past 5 years. We have tried replacing bulbs and wires but nothing works. The lights go out very quickly. Sometimes both lights will work or only one light will work. I try to smack the headlights for it to come on and sometimes that works. They go in and out when I am driving. Right now, neither of the lights are working and it is becoming dangerous because I have to drive at night and people on the road can have a hard time seeing me because my car is black. I have a traffic citation for this back in December 2018.

My Pontiac G6 has only 80,000 miles on it. Just starting the car to pull out if the garage; power steering goes out; can't steer. So, I shut car off; wait a few minutes restart car goes away. within one block or less from home dash light say power steering problems can't steer. So have to do the same as before shut car off restart car goes away then goes out again in a few seconds. Had the car sense it was new. Look up recall #14V153000 Bulletin 14116 an called Dealership they said it is not covered. So how can I get a dealership to except what I found and fix the problem to make my Pontiac G6 safe to drive without having to pay for what's not my problem?

Sudden loss of power steering while driving. There was no warning on both occasions. One time I could not turn the vehicle and ended up leaving the road. Traffic behind me, as well, as cross traffic from the light change, piled up until I was able to run back over the curb and get back on the road. The car is currently at a repair shop for the 2nd time. The power steering recall affected the same year and model of my vehicle, but not the same manufacture date. My car was manufactured in July 2008. The power steering recall for my car ended in late June 2008.

The contact stated while the vehicle was being driven at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost power steering assist functionality. The power steering assist warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was towed to the independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the power steering motor controller unit needed to be replaced. The vehicle remained with the independent mechanic awaiting the repair. The contact was made aware of NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V153000 (Steering) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the VIN was not included in the recall. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

Power steering failed while driving. Turning was very difficult on snowy streets without power steering. After shutting off the car and restarting, power steering came back on briefly, then failed again. The car did display a warning that the power steering failed while it was happening, but nothing prior to the event. The car model uses electric power assist system. It has not yet been inspected by a dealer.

The mechanic informed the contact that due to NHTSA Campaign Number: 12V460000 (Power Train) there was a delay in retrieving the part for the repair. The vehicle had been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in the recall. The approximate failure mileage was 141,000.

The power steering mechanism stopped working, therefore I cannot turn the wheel. The gear shifter/drive train stopped working, therefore I cannot go into reverse, I am stuck in 3rd gear. It is unsafe because when I go to turn I cannot turn the wheel at times. I have issues braking. All of these issues are recalls on the vehicle. GM states that the recalls were performed seven years ago in San Juan, Puerto Rico, I have no way to verify that information nor any assurances that the parts used weren't faulty. I request new repairs under the recall warnings.

Power steering goes off while driving. Previous recall for this reason while checking my Vin it states that there are no unrepaired recalls however either mine was never actually fixed or it has not been repaired properly.

Well, we purchased a 2009 Pontiac G6 in November of 2021. We have been having problems with our light staying on, we were pull over a couple nights ago due to our lights not working. Also, our G6 pulls to the right and tweeters are the only speakers that work. Sometimes the driver door speaker will come on but that's in a blue moon. My step dad looked at my lights and noticed our wires were burnt and so was the connection piece. My fiancé informed me the other day that when he was fueling up, that he had to turn the car off because he heard a weird noise coming from the inside of the gas tank. Also, when we purchased the vehicle the battery was put in wrong and rubbing up against our hood [XXX] near caught our car on fire. Sometimes the car with slowing idle and won't go until I have to put my foot all the way down to the floor. Also, I had all 4 brand new tires put on it and the tire light is still on. Coat me $576.67 for tires because I got the weather, puncture proof and warranty! We have told South Shields Auto Credit in OKC, Ok I believe his name is [XXX] about the lights and he told his actual words "THAT SOUNDS LIKE WIRING PROBLEM AND WE DON'T DEAL WITH WIRING PROBLEMS"!! We took it in to get the light fixed and the lights were working for about 2 days and they quit working again.
