Defect Description
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, A CONDITION EXISTS THAT ALLOWS OIL TO LEAK FROM THE ALL-WHEEL DRIVE TRANSFER CASE.
Consequence
LOW OIL LEVELS IN THE TRANSFER CASE COULD CAUSE BEARING DAMAGE AND RESULT IN DRIVE TRAIN LOCKUP, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TRANSFER CASE FOR INDICATIONS OF OIL LEAKAGE OR DAMAGE. VEHICLES THAT HAVE OIL LEAKAGE WILL HAVE THE TRANSFER CASE RESEALED AND RE-FILL THE TRANSFER CASE TO THE PROPER LEVEL, OR REPLACED THE TRANSFER CASE IF THERE IS EVIDENCE OF DAMAGE. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO B

I EVEN WAS ABLE TO DEMONSTRATE HOW THE PEDAL STICKS IN TO THE FLOOR ONCE TO A FRIEND WHEN THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF AND THE RUG WAS PULLED BACK, BY PUSHING IT DOWN TO THE FLOOR WITH MY HAND AND IT STAYED DEPRESSED HARD UNTIL PRIED UP AGAIN. I HAVE COME VERY CLOSE TO HAVING AN ACCIDENT ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, DUE TO THE UNEXPECTED RAPID ACCELERATION. I SUGGESTED VAPOR LOCK WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL TO THE DEALER SERVICEMAN, AFTER SEEING THE REPORTS ABOUT FORD THAT SOUNDED AMAZINGLY SIMILAR, BUT THEY WOULDN'T COMMIT TO THAT OR ANY OTHER REASON. I HAVE SEEN THIS PROBLEM LISTED IN OTHER BLOGS AND FIND IT INTERESTING THAT THE DEALER TELLS THE CLIENT THAT IT IS THE FLOOR MAT GETTING UNDER THE PEDAL. I HAD THE FLOOR MAT PULLED OUT AND IT STILL DOES IT, SO IT'S NOT THE FLOOR MAT.
