STEERING:COLUMN
LAND ROVER IS RECALLING 37,142 MY 2005-2006 LR3 AND RANGE ROVER SPORT VEHICLES. RELATIVE MOTION BETWEEN THE STEERING WHEEL HUB AND/OR THE STEERING COLUMN COWL WITH THE CLOCKSPRING, WHICH INCLUDES THE DRIVER SIDE AIR BAG CIRCUITRY, COULD RESULT IN FRACTURING OF THE AIR BAG WIRING CONNECTION. IF AN AIR BAG WIRE FRACTURES, THE SRS WARNING LIGHT WILL ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. THE SRS WARNING LIGHT INDICATES TO THE DRIVER THAT THERE IS A CONCERN WITH THE SRS SYSTEM IN THE VEHICLE AND THAT IMMEDIATE REPAIR IS NECESSARY.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSERT 1MM SPACERS BETWEEN THE LOWER LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE COLUMN SWITCH MOUNTING POINT AND THE COLUMN LOCK TO IMPROVE THE ALIGNMENT OF THE COLUMN SWITCH. TWO FOAM PADS WILL ALSO BE FITTED TO THE TOP OF THE STEERING COLUMN SWITCH GEAR TO PROVIDE ASSURED CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE COWL AND THE CLOCKSPRING FACE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 30, 2008. THIS COULD RESULT IN EXCESSIVE SWELLING AND CRACKING OF A GROMMET AND SUBSEQUENT DETACHMENT OF THE BREATHER PIPE FROM A CONNECTOR TUBE. WHEN THE FUEL LEVEL IN THE TANK IS ABOVE THE LEVEL OF THE DETACHED JOINT, FUEL MAY THEN ENTER THE BREATHER PIPE AND EXCESS FUEL MAY BE DISCHARGED ONTO THE GROUND.

2006 LR3 WITH ONLY 93K MILES HAD THE TIMING CHAIN BREAK WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY SHUT DOWN. THE VEHICLE HAS A FULL SERVICE HISTORY AT AN AUTHORIZED LAND ROVER DEALER SHOWING RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN PERFORMED DURING THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. THE DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE (VALVES ETC.) IS ESTIMATED AT $5500 TO REPAIR. THE TIMING CHAIN IS MADE OF METAL AND BASED ON INDUSTRY EXPERTISE IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BREAK FOR THE LIFE OF THE ENGINE OR PAST 200,000+ MILES. RESEARCH ONLINE SHOWS THIS HAS HAPPENED TO OTHER LR3 OWNERS WITH VEHICLES WITH LESS THAN 100K MILES. BASED UPON THE EXPECTATIONS FOR THE LIFESPAN OF A TIMING CHAIN AND OTHER SIMILAR INCIDENTS, I BELIEVE THERE MAY BE A DEFECTIVE PART ON THIS VEHICLE ASSOCIATED WITH THE TIMING CHAIN AND IT'S RELATED COMPONENTS. THERE ARE NO MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDED GUIDELINES TO REPLACE THE TIMING CHAIN PRIOR TO 100K MILES AND IT IS EXPECTED TO LAST FAR LONGER THAN 100K MILES BASED UPON NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR FOR THIS VEHICLE. WE HAVE ONLY USED THE VEHICLE US ROADS AS YOU WOULD A TYPICAL AUTOMOBILE (NO OFF-ROADING HOBBIES ETC.) WE ARE PURSUING THIS MATTER WITH LAND ROVER DIRECTLY AND REPORTING THIS AS A SAFETY ISSUE TO ALERT OTHER LR3 OWNERS. *TR

I BEGAN TO NOTICE A RATTLING NOISE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE DRIVER'S SIDE, WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED. AFTER A WEEK, THE "SUSPENSION FAULT" LIGHT CAME ON. I WAS TOLD THE SUSPENSION COMPRESSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, SO I WENT AHEAD WITH THE REPAIRS AT A COST OF $1600. WHEN I PICKED UP THE VEHICLE AND TESTED THE SUSPENSION, IT WOULD NOT RAISE INTO OFF ROAD HEIGHT. IT LOWERED FINE, BUT WHEN I PUT IT IN NORMAL HEIGHT, ONLY THE REAR WOULD RAISE. IT ALSO TOOK A LOT LONGER THAN USUAL. I DIDN'T EVEN GET IT OUT OF THE SHOP PARKING LOT BEFORE THE SUSPENSION FAULT LIGHT LIT UP AGAIN. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM ONLINE AND FINDING OUT THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT SOMETIMES TAKES 2 OR 3 ATTEMPTS TO CORRECT, IT'S OBVIOUS THERE'S A DEFECT WITH THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM OR THE ACTUAL COMPRESSOR. EITHER WAY, THIS SHOULD BE COVERED BY LANDROVER. I HOPE THEY DO THE RIGHT THING AND ISSUE A RECALL. *TR

LANDROVER LR 3 HAVE A KNOWN PROBLEM OF HAVING WATER COLLECT IN THE SUNROOF AREA DUE TO BLOCKAGE IN SOME DRAINAGE TUBE FROM DEBRIS. CLEANING OF THESE TUBES IS NOT A REGULAR PART OF MAINTENANCE IF YOU TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE OR SERVICE. THE WATER COLLECT AND LEAKS INTO THE CABIN DIRECTLY OVER THE RADIO AND MIDDLE CONSOLE. IT ALSO LEAKS OVER THE DASHBOARD NEAR THE PASSENGER HEAT REGISTER AND IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE DASHBOARD AREA OVER THE HEAT REGISTER. WATER SEEPS INTO THE ELECTRIC SYSTEM (THE MAIN BCM) THAT CONTROLS MANY IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS OF THE VEHICLE OPERATION. SO FAR I HAVE A SHORT IN THE RADIO. MANY OF THE LANDROVER FORUMS ONLINE HAVE SEVERAL CUSTOMERS AND OWNERS OF LANDROVER LR3 THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM. THIS DEFECT IN THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM FOR THE SUNROOF COULD CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE / SHORTING OUT OF THE BCM THAT CONTROLS THE ENTIRE VEHICLE. LANDROVER LR 3 HAVE A KNOWN PROBLEM OF HAVING WATER COLLECT IN THE SUNROOF AREA DUE TO BLOCKAGE IN SOME DRAINAGE TUBE FROM DEBRIS. CLEANING OF THESE TUBES IS NOT A REGULAR PART OF MAINTENANCE IF YOU TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE OR SERVICE. THE WATER COLLECT AND LEAKS INTO THE CABIN DIRECTLY OVER THE RADIO AND MIDDLE CONSOLE. IT ALSO LEAKS OVER THE DASHBOARD NEAR THE PASSENGER HEAT REGISTER AND IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE DASHBOARD AREA OVER THE HEAT REGISTER. WATER SEEPS INTO THE ELECTRIC SYSTEM (THE MAIN BCM) THAT CONTROLS MANY IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS OF THE VEHICLE OPERATION. SO FAR I HAVE A SHORT IN THE RADIO. MANY OF THE LANDROVER FORUMS ONLINE HAVE SEVERAL CUSTOMERS AND OWNERS OF LANDROVER LR3 THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM. THIS DEFECT IN THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM FOR THE SUNROOF COULD CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE / SHORTING OUT OF THE BCM THAT CONTROLS THE ENTIRE VEHICLE. CHECK FOR TRANSMISSION SOFTWARE UPDATE, AS IT INITIALLY SEEMED TO HAVE THE MUST DISCUSSED PROBLEM OF HARSH AND IRREGULAR SHIFTING WHEN ROLLING TO A STOP AND THEN RE-ACCELERATING. THIS PROBLEM HAS CONTINUED INTERMITTANTLY AND NOW THE VEHICLE SOMETIMES DROPS COMPLETELY OUT OF GEAR WHEN SLOWING DOWN OR TURNING. I BOUGHT A 2006 LR3 ABOUT A YEAR AGO FROM A DEALER IN SOUTH FLORIDA. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 39K MILES ON IT AND LAST WEEK THE SUSPENSION FAULT INDICATOR CAME ON. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER TO HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE SUSPENSION COMPRESSOR IS NOT WORKING. TO REPLACE THE PART IS $1200 BECAUSE THE CAR IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. IF THE COMPRESSOR FAILS, THE SUSPENSION FAILS AND THE TRUCK CAN END UP RIDING ON THE TIRES AT ANY TIME UNTIL THE COMPRESSOR IS FIXED. AFTER LOOKING ON THE INTERNET AT VARIOUS LAND ROVER FORUMS..I HAVE FOUND THIS TO BE A PROBLEM ON LR3'S. IF YOU WHERE UNABLE TO GET THE FRONT DOORS IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY AND HAD TO EXIT THE REAR...IF THAT CABLE IS BROKE...IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO MANUALLY RELEASE THE REAR TAILGATE..YOU ARE STUCK IN THE CAR..I TOOK THE CAR TO THE LAND ROVER DEALERSHIP AND THERE FIX IS TO JUST REPLACE THE BROKE CABLE/ACTUATOR FOR 500.00...THEY HAVE TO BREAK INTO THE REAR TAILGATE FROM INSIDE THE VEHICLE....RUINING THE TRIM ...WHICH OF COURSE I HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE REPLACED..HENCE THE LARGE BILL.....THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND SHOULD BE RECALLED/ADDRESSED BY LANDROVER. *TR

THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND INSURANCE COMPANY STATED THAT THE AIR COMPRESSOR CAUSED THE FIRE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE CONTACT HAD TO TURN OFF THE VEHICLE TO STOP IT FROM ACCELERATING FURTHER. SHE WILL TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER IN A FEW DAYS BECAUSE SHE LIVES ON AN ISLAND. THERE WAS APPROXIMATELY $1,400 WORTH OF DAMAGE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,000.

THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL WAS MAKING A HIGH PITCHED NOSE FOR ALMOST 8 MONTHS. I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. EVENTUALLY THE HIGH PITCHED NOISE TURNED INTO A LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND WAS TOLD THE "OUTSIDE" BRAKE,(WHICH HAS NO SENSOR) HAD BEEN LOCKED IN PLACE AND CAUSED THE BREAKS TO WEAR COMPLETELY DOWN TO METAL ON METAL. THIS REQUIRED ME TO BUY NEW BRAKES FOR BOTH SIDES. IT SEEM TO ME TO BE A MALFUNCTION IN THE CAR BUT THE DEALER SAID IT IS A "WEAR AND TEAR" ITEM SO IT IS NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY. I TOLD DENISE, HE ALSO DOESN'T HAVE ANY RECORD OF MY NOT REQUESTING IT. I REMINDED DENISE THAT IF LANDROVER PUTS OUT A DIRECTIVE, THE DEALERSHIPS RECEIVE THEM, NOT THE CUSTOMER. THE SERVICE TICKET ON THE DAY THAT I HAD MY VEHICLE IN BETHESDA, MD CLEARLY NOTES THAT THE TIRES, HENCE, THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM WAS PREMATURELY MALFUNCTIONING AND IT IS THE DEALERSHIP DUTY UNDER THE WARRANTY TO EXECUTE ALL REQUIRED ROUTINE SERVICES. I HAD MY LANDROVER LR3 VEHICLE SERVICED AT THE ALEXANDRIA, VA WHILE AT THIS DEALERSHIP I REQUESTED TO HAVE SERVICE WHICH I DISCOVERED WAS ISSUED THROUGH A LANDROVER MANUFACTURE'S BULLETIN COMPLETED ALSO. *TR ON OCTOBER 23, 2007, MY VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT INTO THE BETHESDA, MD LANDROVER DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICING, INCLUDING THE MAINTENANCE WORK, REPAIR OF THE BRAKE LIGHTS AND REPAIR OF THE SUNROOF. THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT I NEEDED REPLACEMENT TIRES AND AN ALIGNMENT I QUESTIONED THE LOGIC OF THE TIRES PREMATURELY WEARING. I DECIDED TO RESEARCH THE MATTER FURTHER. THESE CONDITIONS EXISTED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS AT THE BETHESDA, MD LOCATION, BUT WERE NOT TAKEN CARE OF WHICH WAS PART OF THE SERVICE WARRANTY. DANIEL'S PROMISED TO ME THAT HE WOULD TAKE CARE OF THE DIRECTIVE'S COSTS, I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM THE PERSON WHO IDENTIFIED HIMSELF AS DENISE MATIUPA, A SUPERVISOR. THE BRAKE ROTORS ON MY LAND ROVER BECAME SEVERELY WARPED AT 12,744 MILES. THEY WERE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY, BUT BRAKE ROTORS SHOULD NOT WARP WITH SO FEW MILES ON THEM. I THINK THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH ALL LAND ROVERS BASED ON COMMENTS FROM THE DEALER. *TR

I UNDERSTAND THAT LAND ROVER ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN LA 204-005 IN THE US IN OCTOBER 2006, WHICH COVERS VINS FROM 5A000360 TO 6A403382 THAT STATES THAT UNEVEN TIRE WEAR MAY BE CAUSED BY A DEGREE OF "BUSH SETTLE" THAT AFFECTS THE GEOMETRY OF THE TIRES INCREASING TIRE WEAR. THE LAW FIRM OF KABOB IN CALIFORNIA HAS FILED A CLASS ACTION SUIT AND THE CASE IS NOW PENDING IN THE SUPERIOR COURT OF SANTA CLARA COUNTY. *TR
