ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:CRANKCASE (PCV)
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2008-2013 1 Series Coupe (128i); 2007-2013 3 Series Coupe (328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive); 2007-2010 X3 SAV (X3 3.0si, X3 xDrive30i); 2008-2013 1 Series Convertible (128i); 2006-2011 3 Series Sedan (325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive, 330i, 330xi); 2006-2012 3 Series Wagon (328i, 328i xDrive); 2007-2013 3 Series Convertible (328i); 2006-2010 5 Series Sedan (525i, 525xi, 528i, 528xi, 530i, 530xi); 2006-2007 5 Series Wagon (530xi); 2007-2010 X5 SAV (X5 3.0si, X5 xDrive30i); 2006-2008 Z4 Coupe (Z4 3.0si); and 2006-2011 Z4 Roadster (Z4 3.0i, Z4 3.0si, Z4 sDrive30i) vehicles. The heater for the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve may short circuit.
Remedy: This recall supersedes and expands previous NHTSA recalls 17V-683 and 19V-273. Dealers will install an electrical wiring harness with fuse protection for the PCV Valve heater in potentially affected vehicles, free of charge. This recall supersedes and expands previous NHTSA recalls 17V-683 and 19V-273. Vehicles previously repaired under the prior recalls will need to come back for the new recall remedy. The remedy is currently being developed. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed on April 1, 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 22, 2022. BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2008-2013 128i and 135i coupes and convertibles and 1 Series M coupes, 2006-2011 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi, 335i xDrive Sedans, 2009-2011 335d sedans, 2006-2012 325xiT, 328i and 328xi sports wagons, 2007-2013 328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive, 335i, 335xi, 335i xDrive, 335is and M3 Coupes and Convertibles, 2013-2015 X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i and X1 xDrive35i SAVs, 2007-2010 X3 xDrive30i SAVs, 2007-2013 X5 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive48i, X5 xDrive50i and X5 M SAVs, 2009-2013 BMW X5 xDrive35d SAVs, 2008-2014 X6 xDrive35i, X6 xDrive50i, and X6 M SACs, 2010-2011 BMW X6 xDrive50i SACs and 2008-2011 M3 Sedan vehicles. Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag module or inflator depending on the vehicle model, free of charge. The recall began March 9, 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

ALL FOUR ENGINE MOUNTING BOLTS ARE SHEARED AND COMPLETELY BROKEN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN ANY KIND OF ACCIDENT AND NO OTHER ISSUES I.E. ENGINE TAKEN OUT AND REUSAGE OF BOLTS, ETC. THE ENGINE WAS SITTING ON THE SURROUNDING CHASSIS. THIS CAUSED THE ENGINE HEAD TO CRACK AND OIL LEAKING ONTO THE EXHAUST

MY QUESTION IS SINCE I AM STILL DRIVING MY CAR, IF I WERE IN AN ACCIDENT, IS THE LIABILITY OF MY PASSENGER MY RESPONSIBILITY? I CANNOT LET THE CAR SIT PARKED UNTIL A REMEDY IS AVAILABLE AS THIS WOULD RUIN THE CARS ENGINE. BMW AND TAKATA HAVE NO REMEDY AND HAVE GIVEN NO ETA WHEN ONE WOULD BECOME AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER SEAT WAS BURNING. THE CONTACT TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND WAITED FOR THE SEAT TO COOL DOWN. THE CONTACT DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ELECTRIC WIRING FOR THE SEAT FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000.

THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT BOTTOM BURNED THROUGH THE UPHOLSTERY AND BURNED THE THIGH OF THE DRIVER WHILE THE SEAT HEATER WAS IN USE APPROXIMATELY FIVE MINUTES INTO THE DRIVE ON PAVED CITY STREETS. IT WAS IMMEDIATELY TURNED OFF BEFORE THE UPHOLSTERY ACTUALLY CAUGHT FIRE.

AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY A FAULTY HEATING ELEMENT AND THE SEAT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 111,000.

HEATED DRIVERS SEAT STARTED TO BURN ME LEFT SIDE OF SEAT. BURNING SMELL. I SHUT IT OFF, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE IT WOULD HAVE CONTINUED TO BURN THROUGH SEAT IF I HAD NOT. CAN FEEL THE WIRE THROUGH THE LEATHER SEAT. CALLED BMW AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD "HELP" WITH THE COST OF REPAIR, BUT I HAVE TO PAY A DIAGNOSTIC FEE FIRST. WILL TAKE THIS TO ME REGULAR MECHANIC FIRST.

IT IS NOW OCTOBER 2016, PLUS I AM IN FLORIDA WHICH MAKES THIS REPAIR A PRIORITY ACCORDING TO BMW BECAUSE THE DAMAGE HAPPENS FASTER IN WARMER CLIMATES.

I WAS INFORMED BY BMW USA THAT THE INTERIM REPAIR IS THE SAME PARTS THAT ARE CURRENTLY BEING USED IN THE VEHICLE AND THAT DUE TO THE NEW (SAME) PARTS NOT HAVING BEEN EXPOSED TO ATMOSPHERIC ELEMENTS THEREBY "REDUCES THE RISK." THE COMPLAINT I HAVE IS THAT THE RISK SHOULD BE ELIMINATED BY CORRECTLY REPAIRING THE ISSUE, NOT TO JUST "REDUCE THE RISK." THE SOLUTION I AM SEEKING IS TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED TO ELIMINATE THE RISK, NOT JUST REDUCE IT.

MY 2007 BMW X3 (E83) FRONT PASSENGER SIDE, "ENGINE MOUNT BRACKET BOLTS" SNAPPED WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE. AT LEAST 3 OF THE 4 ALUMINUM BOLTS SNAPPED DURING NORMAL VEHICLE OPERATION WHICH RESULTED IN MY ENGINE RESTING ON THE VEHICLES WATER PUMP AND EVENTUALLY CAUSING THE WATER PUMP TO FAIL. MY MECHANIC NOTICED THE SNAPPED BOLTS WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO INSTALL A NEW WATER PUMP. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE TO HAVE HALF YOUR ENGINE NOT PROPERLY MOUNTED DOWN AND SHOULD BE A FACTORY RECALL. JUST THINK OF THE DAMAGE A FRONT END COLLISION CAN COST WITH THAT PART OF THE ENGINE ABLE TO MOVE FREELY. ON THE MICRO SIDE IT COST ME A WATER PUMP. HOWEVER IT COULD HAVE DONE MORE DAMAGE. PLEASE RECALL THIS!!! NUMEROUS PEOPLE ONLINE ARE REPORTING THE SAME FAILURE. IT'S A VERY DANGEROUS AND LIFE THREATENING MALFUNCTION THAT COULD BE AVOIDED BY BMW. THE PROBLEM IS GALVANIZED CORROSION BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT METALS OVER TIME. THE BOLTS ARE ALUMINUM, AND THE ENGINE MOUNTS ARE MAGNESIUM-ALUMINUM MIX. I BELIEVE IT IS THE MAGNESIUM THAT IS CAUSING THE FAILURE. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF FIXES. 1-EASY FIX WOULD BE TO TAKE STEEL BOLTS AND COAT THEM WITH ALUMINUM (THE ALUMINUM WILL SLOW CORROSION AND THE STEEL WILL STRENGTHEN THE BOLT WITHOUT GIVING WAY TO GALVANIZED CORROSION). 2-OTHER FIX WOULD BE TO MAKE THE BOLTS OF THE EXACT SAME MIXTURE AS THE ENGINE BLOCK (MAGNESIUM AND ALUMINUM) NOT JUST ALUMINUM. THE BOLTS STILL WONT BE AS STRONG AS THE STEEL (ALUMINUM) COATED BOLTS.

I GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT AND THE AIRBAGS DIDN'T EVEN DEPLOY, I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED . I AM SEEKING LEGAL HELP. I WANT A REPLACEMENT VEHICLE OR I AM GOING TO COURT AND THEY CAN HAVE THIS PIECE OF CRAP BACK. THIS WAS NOTICED WHEN VEHICLE WAS STOPPED, IN PARK, ALL DOORS WERE UNLOCKED, WHEN A PASSENGER ATREMPTED TO OPEN THE DOOR FROM OUTSIDE IN ORDER TO RETRIEVE HER BELONGINGS. LATER ATTEMPTS TO OPERATE THE DOOR FAILED, INCLUDING LOCKING/UNLOCKING WITH KEY, WITH INTERIOR UNLOCK BUTTON, WITH WINDOW UP AND DOWN AND WITH CAR ON AND OFF. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE HAVING MY WIFE AND 20 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER IN THIS (MY WIFE'S) VEHICLE. WHEN I PULLED THE COVER PLATE OFF LEADING TO THE ENGINE MOUNT ON THE BOTTOM RIGHT SIDE OF THE ENGINE, A SHEARED BOLT FELL OUT. AS I SEARCH TO WHERE IT CAME FROM I NOTICED IT WAS ONE OF THE FOUR BOLTS HOLDING THE ENGINE MOUNT TO THE ENGINE. ONE THING TO MENTION ABOUT THE BOLT IS THAT IS MADE OF ALUMINUM. IT SEEMS COMPLETELY INADEQUATE FOR A HIGH STRESS AREA LIKE AN ENGINE MOUNT. I CANNOT TELL YOU WHEN EXACTLY THE BOLT FAILED, LIKELY IN MOTION AT SOME POINT BETWEEN 70K AND 80K MILES.

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A SALVAGE YARD WHERE IT WAS DEEMED DESTROYED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THERE WERE TWO INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION THE CONTACT'S LEFT HAND WAS CRUSHED AND REQUIRED FOUR SURGERIES. THE CONTACT ENDURED ONE AND A HALF YEARS OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY, POST CONCUSSION BRAIN DAMAGE, AND PTSD THERAPY. DUE TO THE CRASH, THE CONTACT NO LONGER HAD PROPER FUNCTIONALITY OF THE LEFT HAND. A WARNING CODE IS TRIGGERED THAT AFFECTS THE OPERATION OF THE AIRBAG. THE WARNING CODE IS PASSENGER SEAT OCCUPANCY SENSOR. THE AIRBAG LIGHT IN THE DASH FLASHES ON AND OFF RANDOMLY WHETHER THERE IS SOMEONE IN THE SEAT OR NOT. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHETHER THE PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT IS FASTENED OR NOT. BMW HAS A RECALL FOR EARLIER YEARS OF THIS SAME PROBLEM ON THIS VEHICLE, BUT NOT FOR THIS YEAR WHICH ALSO HAS QUITE A FEW OF THESE FAILURES. OBVIOUSLY THEY HAVE NOT FIXED THIS PROBLEM AND NEED TO RECALL ALL VEHICLES WITH SIMILAR OCCUPANCY SEAT SENSORS THAT AFFECT THE AIRBAG.
