DURING A TRIP ON THE "ALASKA HIGHWAY" IN JUNE, 1997, THE INSIDE RIGHT REAR TIRE ON MY 1988 WINNEBAGO MOTORHOME EXPLODED WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH ON AN ASPHALT SURFACED ROAD. THE FACE OF THE TIRE TREAD WAS RIPPED OPEN AND A LARGE PATCH OF CLINGING TREAD CAUGHT THE EXHAUST TAIL PIPE TAKING IT FOR A SPIN IN THE WHEEL WELL GAUGING ITS PLASTIC LINING, CAUGHT THE MUD FLAP RIPPING OFF TWO SQ FT OF FIBERGLAS
... S UNDERBODY AND LETTING FLY A FEW HANDFULLS OF THERMAL INSULATION. THE CONCUSSION OF THE BLOWOUT ALSO KNOCKED LOOSE A TWELVE FT LONG LOWER TRIM PANEL ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE MOTORHOME AND DISLODGED THE STATOR OF THE COACH'S DOMESTIC WATER SUPPLY PUMP. I PICKED UP A TRAIL OF DEBRIS FROM THE HIGHWAY FOR SEVERAL HUNRED YARDS. I WORKED WITH A MECHANIC IN WATSON LAKE, YUKON TERRITORIES, CANADA FOR THREE DAYS HELPING WITH THE REPAIRS SPENDING A TOTAL OF $850 US. THE TIRE INVOLVED, FIRESTONE STEELTEK R4S 235-85X16, WAS NOT ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT, BUT PURCHASED 25 JAN 92, FROM G&E TIRE & SERVICE IN FORT WALTON BEACH, FL. THIS CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE PROPANE SYSTEM, MUD FLAP AND BRACKET, REAR BUMPER AND SHEET METAL UNDERCARRIAGE OF THE MOTORHOME. ALTHOUGH THESE TIRES WERE NOT ON THE RECALL LIST, I FEEL THIS TIRE DISSINTEGRATED UNDER SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES AS THE RECALLED ONES AND SHOULD

FOUND OUT ABOUT THE RECALL ON THE NORCOLD REFRIGERATOR BY CHANCE ON A WEBSITE CATERING TO RV'RS, THEN CHECKED NORCOLD'S WEBSITE FOR DETAILS. NOTED THEY HAD ALSO NOTIFIED NHTSA ABOUT THE RECALL. THE COOLING UNIT HAD STARTED LEAKING. NOW NORCOLD TREATS THE REPLACEMENT OF THE COOLING UNIT AS A WARRANTY ISSUE, AND NOT PART OF THE ORIGINAL RECALL. TALKING TO THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS INDICATES THEY ARE EXPERIENCING MORE COOLING UNIT FAILURES, EVEN AFTER THE AC HEATING ELEMENT HAS BEEN REPLACED. I THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE REPLACED THE HEATING ELEMENT AND SUSPECT COOLING UNIT TOGETHER UNDER THE RECALL. IT APPEARS THERE MAY BE NUMEROUS REFRIGERATORS ON THE ROAD THAT HAVE HAD THE AC HEATING ELEMENT REPLACED, BUT WHOSE COOLING UNITS ARE STILL PRONE TO LEAKING AND POSE A SAFETY HAZARD. ON A TRIP TO PENNSYLVANIA HAD ONE TIRE START TO SEPARATE, 3 OTHERS ACTUALLY LOST THE TREAD. ALL WERE RELATIVELY NEW TIRES WITH PROBABLY LESS THAN 5000 MILES. TIRES WERE INFLATED TO 75PSI (MAX 80) AND WERE NOT OVERLOADED. ALL TREAD LOSSES WERE ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS AND AT LESS THAN POSTED SPEEDS.
