RE: A&E AWNING M 8500 BY DOMETIC, PO BOX 490, ELKHART, IN 46515 ON 2000 WINNEBAGO ADVENTURE MOTOR HOME. SERIOUS DESIGN DEFECT CAUSED CATASTROPHIC FAILURE WHICH COULD HAVE RESULTED IN SERIOUS INJURY OR LOSS OF LIFE. SAME DESIGN DEFECT CAUSED A FAILURE IN APRIL 2003 ,WHICH WAS NOT AS SERIOUS AND ONLY REQUIRED THE REPLACEMENT OF THE AWNING FABRIC AND LOCKING MECHANISM.. ROLLER LOCKING MECHANISM
... FAILED. ABLE TO STOP BEFORE ANY LARGE AMOUNT OF DAMAGE. RECENT INCIDENT ON MAY 7, 2007. BEFORE LEAVING ROLLED AGAIN THE AWNING TO MAKE SURE IT WAS TIGHTLY ROLLED AND LOCKING MECHANISM WORKED. TRAVELED 840 MILES FROM PORTLAND TO STRATH MORE, CANADA. IN STRATHMORE DID NOT PUT OUT THE AWNING BUT DID INSPECT TO MAKE SURE STILL TIGHTLY ROLLED AND THE LOCKING MECHANISM ON. 80 MILES S, ROLLER LOCKING MECHANISM FAILED. IN LESS TEN 10 SECONDS AWNING UNFURLED SO RAPIDLY IT WAS BLOWN OVER THE TOP OF THE MOTORHOME, BROKE LOOSE FROM AWNING ARMS, RIPPED THE FABRIC AND FLEW INTO THE ROAD. ONLY BY THE GRACE OF GOD WAS THERE NOT MORE EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. THE AWNING ROLLER AS A FLYING PROJECTILE COULD HAVE SEVERELY INJURED OR KILLED SOMEONE IN FOLLOWING TRAFFIC. THIS WAS A SERIOUS DESIGN DEFICIENCY WHICH CAN ALLOW A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE UNDER NORMAL HIGHWAY TRAVEL CONDITIONS. THIS FAILURE COULD VERY EASILY RESULT IN SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH AND EXTENSIVE AND COSTLY MECHANICAL DAMAGES. THE AWNING STOWING AND LOCKING MECHANISM WAS NOT SUFFICIENT TO ASSURE THAT THE AWNING COULD NOT BECOME UNFURLED UNDER NORMAL HIGHWAY DRIVING CONDITIONS. E-MAILED DOMETIC REQUESTING AWNING REPAIR AND LOCKING MECHANISM MODIFICATION OR REPLACEMENT. THEY REFUSED. THEIR REPRESENTATIVE INFORMED ME THAT CAMPING WORLD AND OTHER RV OUTLETS SELL AWNING LOCKING MECHANISMS WHICH FIT THEIR AWNINGS AND WHICH WOULD LOCK THE AWNING SO THAT IT COULD NOT HAVE THIS CADISTROPIC FAILURE. JUNE 2005 MY WIFE AND I WERE LEAVING ROSWELL NM IN OUR 1999 WINNEBAGO MOTOR HOME WHEN WE EXPERIENCED A LOUD POPPING NOISE. I CALLED OUR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE CARRIER AND WAS DIRECTED TO A REPAIR FACILITY A SHORT DISTANCE AWAY. AFTER LISTENING TO THE NOISE AND LOOKING UNDER THE VEHICLE THEY DETERMINED IT MUST BE AN EXHAUST MANIFOLD LEAK. THEY WERE UNABLE TO LOCATE AN EXHAUST MANIFOLD GASKET LOCALLY A

UPON OUR RETURN A COUPLE DAYS LATER THE MECHANIC WAS JUST COMPLETING THE GASKET REPLACEMENT. WHEN HE FINISHED, HE STARTED THE ENGINE ONLY TO DISCOVER THE NOISE WAS STILL THERE. FURTHER INVESTIGATION REVEALED THE #4 SPARK PLUG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE HAD BLOWN OUT AND ALSO BROKE THE COIL. THEY WERE ABLE TO GET A NEW SPARK PLUG AND COIL FROM THE LOCAL FORD DEALER. AFTER REPLACING THESE PARTS WE WERE ABLE TO RETURN TO COLORADO. ON JULY 6, 2006 WE WERE AGAIN LEAVING TOWN WHEN APPROXIMATELY TWO MILES FROM HOME WE HEARD THE FAMILIAR POPPING NOISE. I RETURNED HOME AND DISCOVERED THE SAME #4 SPARK PLUG HAD BLOWN OUT AGAIN BREAKING THE COIL. I WENT TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALER AND PURCHASED ANOTHER SPARK PLUG AND COIL THINKING ALL I NEEDED TO DO WAS REPLACE IT. I ASKED THE PARTS PERSONNEL WHAT CAUSED THIS TO HAPPEN AND THEY TOLD ME THEY HADN'T HEARD OF THIS BEFORE AND DIDN'T KNOW WHAT CAUSED IT. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS AT REPLACING THE SPARK PLUG I CALLED A MOBILE REPAIR SERVICE TO SEE IF THEY COULD ASSIST ME. THE PERSON I TALKED WITH TOLD ME ABOUT THE TRITON V-10 BLOWING SPARK PLUGS AND THAT I WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE CYLINDER HEADS AT A COST OF $2,000. I THEN CALLED A LOCAL GARAGE AND EXPLAINED MY PROBLEM. THEY SAID THEY COULD TRY AND PUT A HELICOIL IN THE HEAD TO FIX THE PROBLEM FOR AROUND $220. I TOOK THE MOTOR HOME TO THEM AND THEY WERE ABLE TO DO THE HELICOIL FOR $220 PLUS THE SPARK PLUG AND COIL THAT I FURNISHED. THIS SECOND SPARK OCCURRED AT 29,600 MILES. *NMRead more

2000 WINNEBAGO MINNIE MODEL 31C CLASS C MOTOR HOME UTILIZING A 2000 FORD E450 CHASSIS. TIRE INFLATION PRESSURES ARE RELIGIOUSLY CHECKED PRIOR TO EACH USE OF THE MOTOR HOME. ON APRIL 17, 2006 WHILE DRIVING (NORTH ON US98 AT MILE MARKER 17 IN MOBILE, ALABAMA) AT 50 MPH THE RIGHT REAR INBOARD TIRE (FIRESTONE LT225-75 R 16 LOAD RANGE E) SUFFERED AN EXPLOSIVE FAILURE FOLLOWED BY TREAD SEPARATION. THE F
... AILURE WAS NOT PRECEDED BY A DETECTABLE VIBRATION BUT APPEARED TO BE INSTANTANEOUS. THE TREAD BENT THE EXHAUST INTO THE REMAINING TIRE AND STRIPPED THE FENDER AND ROCK SHIELD PROTECTING THE LPG STORAGE TANK. IT BENT THE LPG PLUMBING COMING FROM THE LP TANK, BUT DID NOT BREACH THE PLUMBING OR CAUSE A LEAK. THE VEHICLE REMAINED CONTROLLABLE AND WAS DRIVEN FOR ANOTHER MILE UNTIL IT COULD BE EXITED FROM THE HIGHWAY. THE TIRE ONLY HAD 15250 MILES ON IT AND AS I SAID WAS AS ALWAYS INFLATED TO THE MFG'S SPECIFICATIONS PRIOR TO EACH USE OF THE MOTOR HOME. IT APPEARED THAT THE INTERNAL SIDEWALL RADIAL PLIES HAD FAILED AT THE EDGE OF THE STEEL BELTS. THIS FORCED THE OUTSIDE SIDEWALL PLIES TO CARRY THE PRESSURE LOADS AS WELL AS THE STEEL BELT CENTRIFUGAL RETAINING LOADS THUS EVENTUALLY CAUSING A CARCASS FAILURE AND RESULTING DE-LAMINATION OF THE TREAD/STEEL BELT BONDS. IT APPEARS (AS EVIDENCED BY OXIDATION) THAT THE FAILURE MAY HAVE BEEN PREDICTED BY A CRACK LOCATED ON A RADIAL AXIS IN THE SIDEWALL. I BELIEVE RADIAL (SPOKE TYPE) CRACKS MAY BE AN INDICATOR THAT A SECTION OF THE INTERNAL RADIAL PLIES IS NO LONGER IN TENSION (IN OTHER WORDS INTERNALLY CUT). I HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT THE BRAKING SYSTEM ON MY DODGE SPRINTER 3500 MOTORHOME TO NO AVAIL. THE DEALER CONTINUES TO TELL ME THAT A SOFT PEDAL IS ACCEPTABLE.
