Within a week of purchasing the vehicle from a dealer, I discovered that the fuel tank has a leak, so its currently unsafe to drive. I found out about the leak when I brought it to an independent mechanic for service. I see that other vehicles of this model and year had been recalled for fuel leaks, so I wanted to report the issue.

Heater core burst causing severe burn on drivers right foot. An inch and a half deep puddle of boiling hot antifreeze poured out with no warning from center console over gas pedal. Passenger floor area also had boiling antifreeze. Daughter was driving and taken to hospital treated for second degree burns.

The 2021 XC 40 vehicle will periodically not restart - may be something to do with the safety key or some other electrical malfunction. The dashboard shows the battery symbol when the car will not restart as if the vehicle is dead (no electrical connection). Also, when the start button is depressed the dashboard illuminates with the dead battery signal, but otherwise, it seems the button is not c
... onnected to the vehicle in that the engine does not respond. Also, we had an issue where the vehicle, while we were beginning to stop at a stop sign, went dead and was not responsive. The “Start/Stop” function, although engaged in the center console, is often not operational and will show in the dashboard that it is not operational, but then, randomly (not consistent with the reasons itemized in the Volvo manual for why the start/stop function may not work), will work on a few stops for that particular drive and then revert back to not being operational on the next trip, although it is engaged to be “on” in the center console. Again, this appears to be a sign or symptom of some sort of electrical malfunction. Now, most recently, my wife and daughter were driving the vehicle, and it lost power and shut off in the middle of the road, horrifying these two individuals and greatly upsetting me that a vehicle sold by Volvo would perform so poorly and create a significant hazard to driver and passengers of the vehicle (not to mention others on the roadway). Again, and clearly, there appears to be some sort of electrical malfunction. Clearly, what we first reported to Volvo on or about May 17, 2021 was an electrical problem that Volvo had an idea or knowledge (knew or should have known) that was or may be similar to the problem they had already issued a recall for on the XC 40 recharge.Read more

While I was going down a small side street that is a hill, the air conditioning system suddenly went off and immediately the entire car's mechanisms ceased. The engine stopped and the car was unstearable and the brakes were not working. I had my foot on the brake and that was not responsive, the car slid with all electrical systems not working and the brake not holding the car or stopping the move
... ment of the car. I could not start the car to get the engine going.I could not stop nor start the car that slid into a major street that is a thoroughfare for a hospital. I had no control of the car at all. I attempted at least 7 times to start the Volvo that requires keeping your foot on the brake and turning a small switch that is located right next to the cup holder. Nothing would work. I called Volvo On Call who instead of immediately helping told me to call 911 since the car slid into the middle of the major street and it was an emergency regarding my safetly . A police officer came after a few minutes and blocked the traffic. Meanwhile, I was suddenly able by the 9 or 10th time to start the car and move it to the side of the road. The police officer drove in back of me literally a block away from where the Volvo dealer just happened to be located. There were no warning messages prior to the car ceasing. The car is now in the Volvo dealership who upon receiving it said that I must have gotten the ignition switch wet. This is totally false. I did not have any liquids nor should that be a reason why a car suddenly stops and becomes a piece of metal in the middle of the road. What's worse was that there is no emergency brake on this model. My life was in danger and I am lucky that I was not hit. A passenger got out of her car and stood next to mine in the middle of the road with oncoming traffic coming at my driver's side. Volvo dealership is claiming it's the starter switch and it must have shorted. There is a defect and safety problem requiring investigating.Read more

TERRIBLE GAS SMELL EVERY TIME I DRIVE IT. I GOT SOMEONE TO CHECK IT OUT, THERE IS GAS LEAKING FROM THE FUEL PUMP. THIS PERSON PUT SOME PUTTY OVER THE LEAK WHICH STOPPED THE SMELL BUT THIS IS NOT SAFE. I SEE A RECALL FOR THE FUEL PUMP BUT IT SAYS MY CAR DOESN'T HAVE A CURRENT RECALL.

MY PASSENGER REAR DOOR HANDLE BROKE INTERNALLY WHERE IT COULD NOT BE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE OR THE OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. BOTH REAR DOOR HANDLES FAILED AND AFTER DRIVING AROUND WITH MY KIDS HAVING TO GO IN AND OUT OF THE CAR THROUGH THE FRONT I FINALLY RECEIVED A LOANER FOR 5 WEEKS UNTIL THE PARTS WERE AVAILABLE TO REPAIR THE DOORS. IT APPEARS THE FRONT DRIVER AND FRONT PASSENGER HANDLE MAY FAIL.
