My car had a sudden, catastrophic leak of coolant from a premature failure of a hose on a 5 year old car with 65000 miles. We were driving through mountains and there was no safe shoulder to pull over. I drove 1.5 miles to a service center. I bought the car new and all service work was done at Volvo dealers and all regular maintenance was performed. There were no leaks of coolant prior to th
... e sudden hose failure. The first alert that something was wrong was a red warning light on the dash directing me to stop the car and turn off the engine immediately. Testing on the engine showed a high level of CO in the coolant, indicating a warped head. The entire engine must be replaced. I contend that this was premature failure of a part. I had my insurance agency, Allstate, discuss the case with the Volvo dealership and Allstate was told there was no evidence of impact road damage on the part. I have asked my agent to provide me with written confirmation of their discussion. I have also asked for the defective part to be put aside and saved when the engine is replaced and will be able to send it to NHTSA.Read more

Both of the key fobs I have are broken in that the key won't lock straight out or stay folded into the fob. The weight of the plastic fob alone frequently causes the key to twist backwards if the road is bumpy or uneven, which kills the engine and makes it extremely difficult to steer to safety without power steering. The first time this happened to me I was traveling at 55 mph on a crowded highwa
... y but fortunately I was in the rightmost lane, not in a curve, and was approaching an area where I could pull over to safety. I have had to duct tape both keys in the open position to prevent this. The situation is much worse if additional keys or other weight is added to the ring. It is possible to insert a broken key in a way that causes the weight of the fob to hang away from the driver but large road bumps or accidental interference from the driver or passengers can cause it to flip backwards anyway. These incidents are alarming and confusing for the driver, particularly the first time, and could easily cause an accident depending on the conditions. I am not the only person who has experienced this issue, and it will become even more common as these vehicles age.Read more

When backing the vehicle out of a parking space on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, the vehicle lurched and moved very slowly. The center HUD displayed the message, "Slow Down. The Vehicle will reduce speed. Propulsion system failure." The vehicle was towed to the Volvo certified dealer in Roanoke VA. The technician "reset" the error code and released the vehicle to me. The dealership could not tel
... l me if the vehicle was safe to drive. I called the dealership multiple times, and they stated the problem was being investigated by Volvo corporate. Still, no one can tell me if and the conditions the vehicle will begin its automatic deceleration protocol. I have a second report now from the dealership that the error must occur twice for them to investigate it more thoroughly. I feel fortunate that this occurred in a parking lot, and not while travelling at any speed in heavy traffic. Volvo online forums have been reporting this error since at least August 2022. https://www.xc40forum.com/threads/propulsion-system-failure.5150/ This is the second response from the dealership after I called today for progress: "–based on your DTC codes it appears you are referencing TJ-36309, CMA BEV IHFA Internal Processor Failure. At this time the concern has only occurred 1 time and has not returned after following the TJ. A software fix is still under development to prevent misdetection of these DTCs, as you stated. This TJ was only released last month, VCUSA is working towards a solution. However, if the codes return it signals further fault tracing is needed and we will have to evaluate the situation if it happens." This does not sound safe, and I thank you all for reading.Read more

The vehicle has approximately 16,000 miles on it. It began to shudder in the front end when the brakes were applied at any speed. I contacted the dealer, Parkway Volvo of Wilmington, NC concerning the problem and was told that the vehicle had just gone out of warranty. On December 16, 2022, I took the vehicle to Derhams Alignment and Auto Repair, Wilmington NC to have the problem diagnosed. They f
... ound that the discs of the disc brakes on all four wheels were warped. They recommended replacement of these to repair the problem. Following this I took the car to Parkway Volvo on December 19, 2022, for a second opinion. Parkway came back with the same diagnosis and recommended that the discs be turned to straighten out the surface. I had this done at a cost of $420, and it repaired the problem. There is no reason that a vehicle with 16,000 miles should have warped discs unless it is abused, which this one has not been. I believe that the brake discs are made from inferior steel. I have been driving Volvos for over 20 years and the discs last well over 100,000 miles without an issue. I believe that Volvo is no longer using Swedish steel and instead importing the discs. The Volvo dealer made a number of excuses for the reason for the warping, one being that we have not used the car enough and/or that the electronic emergency brake warps the back discs if the car is parked to long. The car is garaged and parked on a level surface, without the emergency brake on. Also, this does not explain the front disc warping. I do not think that any of their excuses are reasonable, and I believe that Volvo should replace the discs with properly manufactured and safe ones without a charge. I am unable to find the receipt from Derhams Alignment at the moment, but would be glad to get a duplicate and submit it if you need it. Sincerely, Craig A. WengerRead more

Our trucking business name is Fast Way Express LLC and this is a complaint against TEC Equipment Las Vegas (Volvo dealership) in regards to a new Volvo semi truck we purchased on 6/13/2022. After only 10,600 miles and 216 engine hours, all the electrical modules on the truck stopped working. I have pictures of all the warning or error messages on the dashboard. The truck has been in their repair s
... hop since 9/23/2022, for almost 3 months, and they are unable to repair the truck. They are telling us that the parts they don't have are on national backorder and they don't have an estimated time for when they will have the parts. Volvo North America refuses to offer us a replacement for the truck or a refund. This is a new truck, under warranty, it is our only source of income, and we are unable to use it to make a living. We think 3 months is not a reasonable time period for repairs on a new truck under warranty. We paid $196,872.40 for this new truck and we cannot use it because TEC Equipment and Volvo NA are unable to repair it. We think TEC Equipment might be unable to fix the truck, we also think this might be a safety issue for which Volvo doesn't have a solution. We also think that at this point they don't disclose certain information with us and that they might be trying to stall for time.Read more

We were notified by email of a computer update to our 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge (it stated it would automatically download the update then ask us to initiate the installation). When I released the brake, the car

I am theorizing that the car was either in the middle of the download or had just finished the download portion of the update. This problem persisted after I put the car in Drive. I drove about 2 blocks and parked the car. After about 10 minutes I put the car in Drive and it returned to the 1 pedal drive mode and the computer screen in the car showed a message that the update was ready for installation. We recently took our 2020 Volvo XC60 with approximately 20k miles into the dealership where it has received it's oil changes and had its service issues looked at since buying the vehicle new. During the inspection video, the technician indicated the rear brakes had approximately 10% life remaining while the front had approximately 90% life remaining in them. This seems extremely askew and is indic
... ative of a problem. Under normal driving circumstances and 20k miles wear and tear, there is no reason other than a malfunctioning mechanical issue like the emergency brake not disengaging completely that this uneven wear should be occurring. This should not be the case in such a relatively new vehicle and could result in unknown excessive wear on the braking system causing premature brake failure. If we hadn't taken the vehicle in for it's routine oil change, we would not be aware of this safety concern.Read more

Starting Sunday November 27 my car started dripping gasoline on the floor, on the driver side near the rear wheel. Immediately I took it to Volvo dealer Wynne in Hampton, VA. The service specialist told me there was not any existing recall for that issue and let me go. That night I put under the leak a flat pan. That night I collected one gallon in about 8 hours. I called Volvo cars USA [XXX] exp
... lained me the car have been fixed for the campaign #09V483000 in September 14, 2010. I own the car since 2015. I asked her if the recall should be possible to do it again at no cost for me, because it falls under Safety due to the fact the car may get in fire due to the leak of gas. She asked me to go back again to Wynne Volvo dealer and tell to the service specialist that I talked to them and if they wouldn't repair my car I could open a case with Volvo Cars USA. The service specialist told me I could leave the car for inspection, but I would be responsible for at least $180 to get and estimate, but never said that they would fix it under the safety recall number 09V483000 for vehicles sold or registered in the states with hot climate like Virginia. The recall started in January 15, 2010. It covers the fuel pump that can develop cracks in the fuel pump flange. The technician said the repair they did under the recall was replacing an O-Ring gasket only not the fuel pump. The person I talked to in Service is [XXX] with Title Service Advisor. Phone number [XXX]. I called again today Wednesday November 30, 2022 to Volvo Cars USA they said they can not promise to wave the repair because they need first that I pay $180 for a car diagnostic of the issue. They would probably accept to pay part of the total charge but they would be doing it at good will. I don't have $180 to pay upfront for a safety recall that it didn't last but only 12 years. The Safety recall is valid as long as the car is in service, it doesn't matter if I am or not the first owner. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA)Read more

My car developed a severe shake in the steering wheel and pulsing in the brake pedal while under braking. The problem has worsened to the point that braking at high speed creates a serious shaking. I took the car to the dealership and they diagnosed the problem as warped rotors. The car started this with less than 15000 miles on the car. The dealer contacted Volvo to fix under warranty due to the
... defective parts. Volvo declined to fix the rotors because they are a "wear item". This is not normal wear. In fact, during the inspection (10/8) it was noted that the pads still have plenty of life and would not need to be replaced. If the situation were that I had worn out the pads and rotors, I would understand Volvo's position but the warpage is abnormal. When I called in to schedule the initial inspection the technician I spoke with agreed that this is unusual for an S60. When I asked if the rotors would warp again after replacement, I was told by the dealership they have never seen someone come back with warped rotors after replacing them. If it were environmental or driving habits, you would expect this problem to return after replacing the rotors. The warped rotors are a known issue with Volvo. If you search the swedespeed.com website, you will see numerous reports of S60 owners having the same problem. The dealership claims the reason my rotors are warped is because of rust build up causing hot spots and that the car must have sat outside in the rain a long time. This car has been garaged its entire life and is driven daily so rust buildup is not an issue. This rotor and pad combination is defective and fails prematurely.Read more
