IT WAS 10:30 AM ON A CLEAR SPRING DAY. THE STATE TROOPER'S ASSISTANCE WAS FORTUITOUS AND OUR CAR SERVICE WAS COMPLETED BY 4 PM. 10/04 PURCHASED A 1999 S70 VOLVO. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON; DEALERSHIP HAD IT MAINTENANCE, I WAS TOLD IT HAD TO DO WITH THE WAY THE GAS CAP WAS PUT ON. LIGHT WENT ON AND OFF INTERMITTENTLY THE NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS. 6/20 THE ETS LIGHT CAME ON, AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS COMING ON MORE FREQUENTLY AND LONGER. WHEN THE ETS LIGHT CAME ON, I TOOK IT TO VOLVO OF LOUISVILLE. THEY DIAGNOSED THE PR
... OBLEM AND SAID THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER NEEDED REPLACED ($1,400) AND GASKETS ($312). THEY MADE THE REPAIRS. WHEN I PICKED THE CAR UP AND DROVE IT, I COULD STILL HEAR THE SOUND PLUS BOTH LIGHTS WERE ON. THEY WORKED ON IT AGAIN, AND SAID THE O2 SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED; INSTEAD THEY WERE ABLE TO FIX IT. I PICKED THE CAR UP, AND BEFORE I COULD GET HOME, THE CAR WAS NOW RUNNING HOT AND THE AIR CONDITIONER WASN'T WORKING. I CALLED THEM - THEY ASKED ME TO KEEP IT OVER THE WEEKEND AND CALL MONDAY. WHEN THEY PICKED THE CAR UP, I TOLD THEM NOT ONLY WAS THE CAR RUNNING HOT, WITH NO AIR CONDITIONER, BUT IT WAS MAKING A LOUD NOISE. THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR A WEEK ($364). I PICKED THE CAR UP AND BEFORE I COULD CROSS THE STATE LINE, THE CAR STALLED OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. FIRST THE IDLE WAS EXTREMELY ROUGH, AND YOU COULD TOUCH THE GAS PEDAL, BUT NO AMOUNT OF GAS WOULD MAKE THE CAR MOVE FORWARD. IF I TURNED THE CAR OFF A COUPLE OF TIMES, THEN IT WOULD FINALLY WORK NORMALLY. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP, THEY ASKED ME TO DRIVE IT FOR THE WEEKEND AND CALL MONDAY. ON SATURDAY, THE CAR GRADUALLY BECAME HARDER TO GET OUT OF THE STALL MODE. WHEN I PULLED OFF THE ROAD, INSTEAD OF 2 TIMES AND IT WOULD FINALLY START AND WORK PROPERLY, ON SATURDAY IT TOOK 4 OR 5 TIMES TO GET IT TO WORK CORRECTLY. BY SUNDAY, AFTER IT PLACING ME AND MY RELATIVES IN AN INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS SITUATION, I PARKED IT AND TOLD THEM TO COME GET IT. IN THE SUMMER OF 2003 MY WIFE'S 2000 VOLVO V70 XC SUFFERED A FAILURE OF THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL SYSTEM. I WAS DRIVING AT THE TIME AND THE ENGINE POWER DECREASED ABRUPTLY CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SLOW DOWN. FORTUNATELY, THERE WAS LITTLE OR NO TRAFFIC IN THE VICINITY OF THE FAILURE SO THAT I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND THEN RESTARTED IT. IT WORKED WELL ENOUGH TO
... GET ME BACK HOME. I GOT QUOTES TO FIX THE SYSTEM AND WAS TOLD AT THE TIME THAT IT WOULD COST AROUND $1000 TO REPLACE THE PART. THE CAR HAD ABOUT 80K MILES WHEN THIS OCCURRED. I DIDN'T NEED THE CAR TO BE IN SERVICE AND SO WAITED UNTIL THE SUMMER OF 2004 TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. I WAS ALSO PRETTY UPSET AT THE ATTITUDE OF THE VOLVO PEOPLE WHO TOLD ME THAT THE PART WAS OUT OF WARRANTY (WHICH IT REALLY WASN'T SINCE IT IS PART OF THE EMISSIONS SYSTEMS AND THEREFORE MUST LAST AT LEAST 80K IN CT AND THAT IF I COULD AFFORD TO REPAIR THE CAR I SHOULDN'T HAVE BOUGHT IT. THE COST FOR THE REPAIR WAS AROUND $1200. THIS FAILURE, IN MY OPINION, CAUSES AN UNSAFE CONDITION. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT THE OUTCOME WOULD HAVE BEEN HAD I BEEN DRIVING IN HEAVIER TRAFFIC. THE CAR WOULD HAVE SUDDENLY DIED AND IF I WERE IN THE PASSING LANE, THERE WOULD NO WAY TO GET TO THE ROADSIDE. NO TELLING WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED. TWO MONTHS LATER (SEPTEMBER 1, 2004) WHEN THE CARS ENGINE DIED AGAIN WHILE I WAS DRIVING, THE CAR WAS TOWED TO SANTA MONICA VOLVO AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOLD ME THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH MY CAR. I TOLD THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT I DID NOT WANT THE CAR BACK UNTIL THEY FOUND WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE THEN SPOKE TO A MANAGER AND CALLED ME BACK TO SAY THAT MY ALTERNATOR WAS PUTTING OUT LOW VOLTAGE AND THEY REPLACED IT. THEN ON JUNE 30TH MY VOLVO LOST ALL POWER AGAIN WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND WOULDN'T START. THE CAR WAS TOWED BACK TO SANTA MONICA VOLVO WHERE I WAS TOLD THEY NEEDED TO DO A THROTTLE BODY CLEANING AND THEN REPLACE THE MASS AIR FLOW METER FOR A TOTAL OF $708. 99 VOLVO S70 STARTED TO BUCK AND HESITATE AT 60 + MPH. I DID NOT FEEL IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE SINCE THE ENGINE ACTED LIKE IT WANTED TO CUT OUT ENTIRELY. I TOOK VEHICLE TO VOLVO DEALER WHERE THEY REPLACED ETM, ELECTRONIC THROTTLE, AT A COST OF CLOSE TO $ 1000. VEHICLE ONLY HAD 76000 MILES ON IT.*JB

RE:1999, S-80,T-6 VOLVO. SAW AN AP ARTICLE IN MY LOCAL PAPER TODAY RE COMPLAINT INVESTIGATION. I EXPERIENCED VIRTUALLY ALL OF THE SAME PROBLEMS CITED IN THE ARTICLE. NAMELY STALL W/O WARNING, FROM A STOP,STEP ON GAS AND BARELY WOULD MOVE(LIKE SLIPPING CLUTCH ON A MANUAL TRANSMISSION) , HAD NUMEROUS INCIDENTS WHERE I FELT VULNERABLE AND UNSAFE IN TRAFFIC, LOSS OF POWER STEERING ETC. ... CH LIKE THESE OTHER COMPLAINTS. AT SAME TIME I HAD LOTS OF INCORRECT "READOUTS" ON DASH PANEL. I COMPLAINED TO DEALER WHO SAID THIS ALL COULD BE RELATED TO THE ABS CONTROL MODULE WHICH WAS REPLACED AT COST OF $825.00. OLD PART WAS NOT GIVEN BACK TO ME. OF NOTE IS THAT DURING THE SAME REPAIR A BELT WAS REPLACED WHICH THEY DID GIVE BACK TO ME, BUT NOT THE MODULE. MILEAGE WAS ONLY 61,376. THIS MODULE DID SOLVE THE PROBLEM HOWEVER I AM NOW GETTING ANOTHER GOOFY READOUT THAT DEALER SAYS COULD BE A DEFECTIVE MODULE. CURRENT MILEAGE IS 61779. I DID NOT THINK THAT FAILURES OF THIS TYPE SHOULD OCCUR AT SUCH LOW MILEAGE. AT THE TIME I ASKED IF THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS AND WAS TOLD NO. MY 1999 VOLVO S70 GLT WAS JUST TURNED INTO MY LOCAL DEALER. THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE IS THE PRIMARY SUSPECT. ROUGH IDLE, STALLING, SURGING AT IDLE, BURSTS OF OVERLY RICH FUEL MIX AT IDLE. INTERMITTENT SYMPTOMS AT IDLE. RUNS OK AT FREEWAY SPEEDS WITH MILD SURGING. *JB

ON 4 SEPARATE OCCASIONS (3 CITY DRIVING <35 MVPH, AND 1 HWY DRIVING 60 MPH) MY 2001 VOLVO C70 CONVERTIBLE SUDDENLY LOST SPEED TO <5 MPH. ON 3 OCCASIONS, I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR, ALTHOUGH AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, AND STILL GET TO MY DESTINATION AND BACK HOME WITHOUT PROBLEMS. DURING THE HIGHWAY TRAVEL, WHICH WAS ON A VERY RAINY EVENING, I WAS ABLE TO KEEP THE CAR RUNNING , AFTER DIFFICULTY RES
... TARTING, AT SLOW SPEED. AND WITH A LOT OF PRAYERS, FINALLY GOT TO A PARKING LOT WHERE I LEFT THE CAR OVERNIGHT, CALLED FOR A RIDE HOME, AND ANOTHER RIDE TO PICK IT UP THE FOLLOWING MORNING. TOOK IT TO HONOLULU VOLVO DEALER WHO SAID IT WAS THE THROTTLE, MODULE AND COMPUTER, AND COST OVER $1000 FOR PARTS ALONE. I DID NOT HAVE IT REPLACED (THEY WERE SPECIAL ORDER FROM THE MAINLAND), AND THEY SAID THE CAR WAS DRIVABLE.
