DT: THE CONSUMER OWNS TWO VOLVOS, A 1999 CROSS-COUNTRY AND A 1998 CROSS-COUNTRY. VEHICLE STALLED AND LOST POWER DUE TO THE FAILURE OF ELECTRONIC THROTTLE SYSTEM (ETS). *AK

I FIRST NOTICED MY VEHICLE EXPERIENCING SHAKINESS AND SLIGHT STIFFNESS IN THE STEERING WHEEL. PAT PATTERSON VOLVO, TOLD ME I NEEDED SOME SORT OF AIR NIPPLE REPLACED. I REPLACED IT, PAYING BETTER THAN $100. I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSECTION MAKING A LEFT TURN WHEN IT SUDDENLY QUIT! IT RESTARTED. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AFTER IT SUDDENLY FAILED ON SEVERAL MORE OCCASIONS. THE
... DEALERSHIP SAID IT WAS EITHER AN AIR INTAKE PROBLEM THEY COULD FIX FOR $300 OR THE ETM (EXPLAINED THIS WAS A THROTTLE AND COSTS $800 NEEDS REPLACING) OR MIGHT NEED BOTH REPLACED COSTING $1100. THEY HAD TO ORDER THE PARTS AND WOULD CALL ME WHEN THEY ARRIVED. THE NEXT MORNING MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WHEN I STARTED THE CAR. I DROVE IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY TOLD ME THE SAME THING I WAS TOLD THE DAY BEFORE. WHILE WAITING FOR THE PARTS TO ARRIVE, MY NEPHEW WAS SHOT TO DEATH. WITH THE SUDDEN TRAGIC LOSS OF MY 18 YEAR OLD NEPHEW, I WENT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND SETTLED FOR THE $300 JOB; MY FINANCIAL RESOURCES AFTER THE UNEXPECTED TRAVEL EXPENSES TO THE FUNERAL, ARE JUST DEPLETED; THIS CAR IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. THAT WAS ONLY A FEW WEEKS AGO IN JULY. YESTERDAY (8/14/05) THE CAR SUDDENLY QUIT TWICE, AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AGAIN! I HAVE NOT FINANCIALLY RECOVERED FROM THE FUNERAL AND REPAIR EXPENSES OF LAST MONTH! WHILE I WAS IN THE WAITING ROOM, AN OLDER WOMAN WHO WAS EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM, SAID HERS QUIT SEVERAL TIMES WHILE TRAVELING AT 70 MPH WITHOUT WARNING! I HEARD ON THE NEWS ABOUT 131 COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD BY PAT PATTERSON VOLVO ON AT LEAST 4 VISITS RELATING TO THIS PROBLEM THAT THE CAR HAS AN AIR INTAKE PROBLEM AND NEEDS THE ETM REPLACED. THEY NEVER MENTIONED THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES. ON SATURDAY APRIL 2, 2005 ,AT ABOUT 3:00 P.M., I WAS RETURNING HOME WITH MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER FROM A SPRING BREAK TRIP TO WASHINGTON D.C. WE HAD DRIVEN FOR A GOOD PART OF THE DAY THROUGH DIFFICULT CONDITIONS...CONSIDERABLE RAIN AND EVEN A SOME SNOW SHOWERS IN EASTERN OHIO. WHILE DRIVING ON THE OHIO TURNPIKE IN THE VICINITY OF TOLEDO, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOST POWER, THAT IS, THE CAR DECELERATED
... REGARDLESS OF FOOT-PRESSURE ON THE GAS PEDAL. ALTHOUGH I WAS AT THE TIME IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF A RATHER BUSY INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY, WHERE THE CAR STOPPED RUNNING ALTOGETHER. I LET THE CAR SIT FOR A MINUTE, AND THEN ATTEMPTED TO START THE ENGINE AGAIN. ALTHOUGH THE ENGINE TURNED OVER IT WOULD NOT RUN. THROUGH INFORMATION PROVIDED BY GEICO INSURANCE ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE FACILITY WERE ABLE TO SUMMON A TOW TRUCK, WHICH DELIVERED THE CAR, AND MY FAMILY TO A VOLVO DEALERSHIP SCHMIDT IN PERRYSBURG, OHIO AT ABOUT 5:00 P.M. ON THAT SATURDAY EVENING. THIS INCIDENT, APART FROM CONSIDERABLE INCONVENIENCE AND COST, PUT MY FAMILY AND ME IN A VERY HAZARDOUS SITUATION. PARTLY BECAUSE OF THE PRESENCE OF A GUARDRAIL, THE VEHICLE CAME TO REST ONLY INCHES AWAY FROM THE LINE SEPARATING THE HIGHWAY SHOULDER FROM THE RIGHT LANE. BECAUSE OF THE HEAVY TRAFFIC MUCH OF IT CONSISTING OF MASSIVE TRAILER-TRUCKS TRAVELING WEST I THINK IT REASONABLE TO SAY THAT THE EXPOSURE TO RISK WAS HIGH. HAD THE WEATHER VERY CHILLY TEMPERATURES, A PIECING NORTH WIND, AND THE EVER-PRESENT THREAT OF RAIN BEEN ANY BETTER I WOULD HAVE GUIDED MY FAMILY TO THE SHELTER OF AN OVERPASS ABOUT ONE QUARTER-MILE TO THE WEST UNTIL THE TOW-TRUCK ARRIVED. THIS WAS FOLLOWED SHORTLY BY HAVING SEVERE THROTTLE RESPONSE SUCH AS HAVING THE CAR ABRUPTLY SLOWED FROM 55 MPH TO 10 MPH AT A CONSTANT THROTTLE. THERE WERE NO EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE FAILURES. MY 1999 VOLVO V70XC SPUTTERED AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AS I WAS PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC IN JANESVILLE, WISCONSIN IN JANUARY OF THIS YEAR. IN THAT MOMENT THE CAR WOULD BARELY MOVE, REGARDLESS OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION. I WAS LEFT BROADSIDE AGAINST TWO LANES OF ONCOMING CARS. THE CAR WOULD ONLY MOVE, LURCHING, AT WALKING PACE. RETURNING TO THE CAR LATER, A RESTART ELICITED THE SAME PROBLEM. AFTER ANOTHER RESTART THE CAR OPERATED NORMALLY UNTIL ABOUT 20 MILES LATER WHEN IT FAILED AGAIN. AT THE TIME, MY CAR HAD ABOUT 80K MILES. THE REPAIR, DIAGNOSED BY THE VOLVO DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR, WAS TO REPLACE THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE (ETM), WHICH WAS MANUFACTURED BY MARELLI. THIS TURNED OUT TO BE A FAMILIAR ISSUE ON THESE CARS TO MY LOCAL VOLVO DEALER. THE PRICE QUOTED FOR THE REPAIR WAS $1,200. I HAVE THE FAILED ETM IN MY POSSESSION. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE AND, I AM NOW AWARE, A KNOWN DEFECT (UNFORGIVABLE ON A CAR COSTING NEARLY $40,000). VOLVO SHOULD RECALL AND REPLACE THESE POORLY DESIGNED PARTS ON ALL 1999-2001 VOLVOS, AND REIMBURSE OWNERS WHO HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR THE REPLACEMENT. I WAS DRIVING SOUTH ON I-85 IN DULUTH, GA. THIS STRETCH OF METRO ATLANTA INTERSTATE HAS SIX LANES IN EITHER DIRECTION AND TRAFFIC WAS FLOWING AT SPEEDS OF AROUND 75 MPH. PICKED UP THE CAR LATER THAT DAY AND ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK THE CHECK ENGINE CAME ON AGAIN. AS I PULLED INTO MY DRIVEWAY IT STARTED STALLING AGAIN. TOOK IT BACK TO VOLVO ON 6/28. THEY WORKED ON IT FOR 5 HOURS WHILE I WAITED. THEY REPLACED THE FRONT OXYGEN SENSOR, STILL HAD PROBLEMS, REPLACED THE REAR OXYGEN SENSOR, THE LIGHT STILL CAME BACK ON. REPLACED BOTH SENSORS AGAIN AND LOADED SOFTWARE. THAT SEEMED TO DO THE TRICK. I HAVEN'T HAD THAT SAME PROBLEM AGAIN SO FAR. DT: CONTACT STATES HAS A 2000 VOLVO V-70 STATION WAGON. HAD TO REPLACE THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE BECAUSE THE VEHICLE KEPT STALLING. THE ABS LIGHT AND THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. THE CONSUMER STATED AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED THE PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED.*AK *NM

VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING DURING DECELERATION. VEHICLE RESTARTED WITH SOME EFFORT. AT NEXT LIGHT, SITUATION REPEATED ITSELF - VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING DURING DECELERATION. ... UTRAL TO COAST WHILE ATTEMPTING TO RESTART. VEHICLE RESTARTED ONLY WHEN ACCELERATOR WAS PARTIALLY DEPRESSED CAUSING ENGINE TO REV UP. VEHICLE CONTINUED TO STALL WHEN SPEED DROPPED TO APPROXIMATELY 25-30 MPH UNLESS THE ACCELERATOR WAS DEPRESSED TO MAINTAIN ENGINE RPM WHILE BRAKES WERE BEING APPLIED TO SLOW VEHICLE DOWN. CRITICAL SITUATION TRAVELING IN AREA WITH LOW SPEED LIMITS AND TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES SUCH AS STOP SIGNS AND TRAFFIC LIGHTS. IN JULY, 2005 I TOOK MY 2000 S80 IN FOR SERVICE COMPLAINING OF GENERAL PERFORMANCE PROBLEMS INCLUDING SURGING WHEN STOPPED, PARTICULARLY WHEN THE A/C IS RUNNING. SOMETIMES I SAW THE TACHOMETER JUMPING DURING THE SURGE ACTIVITY. BETWEEN 12/2004-6/2005 MY 2003 VOLVO S60 LOST POWER/ POWER DECREASES AT VARYING SPEEDS. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT WAS ON THE HWY GOING 65 MPH. I HAD JUST ACCELERATED TO GET ONTO THE HWY IN FRONT OF A SEMI TRUCK. MY CAR REACHED 65-70 MPH AND BEGAN TO DROP SPEEDS - 65 TO 55 TO 50 TO 40 WITH IN SECONDS. THE SEMI ALMOST RAN OVER ME BECAUSE THE SPEEDS DROPPED SO FAST. I CAUSED 2 OTHER CARS ON THE HWY TO GO

THE FINAL TIME STATING NOT TO GIVE THE CAR BACK UNTIL IT WAS FIXED. THE DEALER SAID THEY DOWNLOADED NEW SOFTWARE TO THE CAR? IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN THEY CAN INSTALL A BLACK BOX TO RECORD WHAT IS GOING ON. WHAT IF THE NEXT TIME THE SEMI DOES CRASH INTO ME? THE FIRST TIME THEY HAD THE CAR THE LABELED AS PEDAL POSITION SENSOR INSTALL/REPLACE? THE SECOND TIME THE INVOICE READS PRESSURE SENSOR INTAKE AIR REPLACED? ULTIMATELY, I SAW THE REPORT IN THE NEWS AND RECOGNIZED THE ISSUE TO EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS TO MY CAR. I NOTICED THAT YOU DID NOT INCLUDE 2003 S60'S IN YOUR REPORT. FOR ABOUT A WEEK THE CAR WAS RUNNING ROUGH WITH HESITATION AND A JERKING FEELING OF LOSS OF POWER. THEN AS MY WIFE WAS DRIVING HOME WITH OUR CHILDREN THE NIGHT OF THE 27TH OF JULY THE CAR STARTED TO LOSE POWER COMPLETELY TO THE POINT WHERE SHE WAS FORCED TO PULL THE CAR OFF THE ROAD. ... OFFERED NO OTHER NARRATIVE. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO TOM WOOD VOLVO IN INDIANAPOLIS WHERE THE TECHNICIAN HAD A HUNCH RIGHT AWAY THAT IT WAS A FAULTY ETM. ITEM WAS REPLACED WITH NEW WHICH RESULTED IN A BILL OF $1100. SINCE THE PROBLEM I HAVE BEEN MADE AWARE THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. *NMRead more
