ON AUG. 13, 2005, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ON A PUBLIC ROAD IN SAN FRANCISCO APPROX. 35 MPH WHEN HER 1999 VOLVO V70 (APPROX. 72,500 MILES ON THE ODOMETER) STALLED. I CALLED PUTNAM VOLVO IN BURLINGAME THE FOLLOWING TUESDAY, AND MADE A SERVICE APPOINTMENT FOR THURSDAY, AUG. 18. THAT THURSDAY MORNING, WHEN I STARTED THE CAR, IT BEGAN TO IDLE ROUGHLY, SURGING FROM APPROX. 800 RPM TO 1500 RPM REPEATEDLY. I

THE 2000 VOLVO V70 WHICH I PURCHASED BRAND NEW BEGAN STALLING EVERY TIME I STARTED TO SLOW DOWN AFTER 3 YEARS OF OWNING IT. STARTING FEBRUARY 2003 THE VEHICLE WOULD COMPLETELY STALL OR STRUGGLE TO STAY RUNNING. I REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO ONE OF THE "AUTHOURIZED" VOLVO DEALERS AND SCHEDULED SERVICE ON 02/05/03. AFTER DIAGNOSING THE CAR, THE SERVICE CENTER TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WIT
... H THE VEHICLE. AS I WAS LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP THE CAR STALLED OUT AGAIN. I RETURNED TO THE SERVICE CENTER AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS JUST NEEDING THE THROTTLE BODY CLEANED. ON 06/19/03 THE PROBLEM STILL CONTINUED THE VEHICLE WAS AGAIN DIAGNOSED AS JUST NEEDING TO CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODY OUT. AGAIN, WITHIN ONE MONTH ON 07/07/03, BACK TO THE SERVICE CENTER WITH THE SAME RESULTS. SEPTEMBER 10, 2003, THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTED. THE THROTTLE BODY WAS CLEANED AGAIN FOR THE 4TH TIME. EACH ONE OF THESE APPOINTMENTS COSTING ME TIME, MONEY AND STILL A VOLOVO V70 THAT STILL STALLS. FINALLY I SCHEDULED ANOTHER SERVICE APPOINTMENT ON 02/27/04 AT ANOTHER "AUTHORIZED" VOLVO CENTER( SOUTH SHORE VOLVO) THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS THE THROTTLE BODY GETTING OIL IN IT FROM THE BACKED UP BREATHER BOX. THEIR SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM WAS TO ALSO CLEAN OUT THE TROTTLE BODY. THIS ATTEMPT AGAIN WAS A FAILURE BECAUSE CURRENTLY, THE VEHICLE STILL STRUGGLES TO STAY RUNNING OR STALLS EVERY TIME YOU SLOW DOWN. I DID WRITE TO VOLVO IN APRIL 2004 AND EXPLAINED MY PROBLEM WITH THE CAR AS WELL AS PROVIDED THEM WITH ALL THE DOCUMENTATION OF ALL THE REPAIRS THAT I HAVE INCURRED TO DATE, BUT THEY SUPPLIED NO EXPLANATION NOR RESOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM. I AM FRUSTRATED AND WOULD LIKE MY VOLVO FIXED AS WELL AS RESTITUTION FOR A TOTAL $1240.98 THAT I HAVE ALREADY INCURRED IN USELESS REPAIR BILLS. WHILE DRIVING AT 65 WITH CRUISE CONTROL ON, THE ETS LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CRUISE CONTROL TURNED OFF CAUSING THE CAR TO DECELERATE SUDDENLY. EVER SINCE PURCHASING OUR VOLVO, THERE HAS BEEN POWER REDUCTION AND SURGES OF WHICH I'VE BROUGHT UP TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE PURCHASED. MY HUSBAND HAS ASKED WHAT MAY CAUSE THIS SORT OF THING BECAUSE WE DIDN'T WANT IT TO BE THE TRANSMISSION. WE WERE TOLD IT WAS PART OF THE WAY A VOLVO WORKS. THE ONLY THING IN THE MANUAL I COULD FIND WAS WHAT THE INITIALS STOOD FOR-ELECTRONIC THROTTLE SYSTEM. WE WERE ABLE TO DRIVE IT HOME AFTER SHORT WHILE BECAUSE OF A SAFETY DEVISE IN THE VEHICLE THAT ALLOWS THIS APPARENTLY. THE NEXT DAY MY HUSBAND CALLED OUR DEALERSHIP WHO WE BOUGHT IT FROM AND WAS TOLD WE HAD TO TAKE IT TO A GARAGE 50 MILES AWAY BECAUSE THEY'RE THE ONLY ONES WITH THE EQUIPMENT TO DIAGNOSE AND REPAIR THE PROBLEM. WE CONTINUED OUR QUESTIONING OF THE SITUATION AND 3 MECHANICS IN 3 DIFFERENT GARAGES TOLD US THEY WERE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT THERE WAS NO RECALL (YET). HOWEVER, I UNDERSTAND FROM AN ACQUAINTANCE NOW THAT THE REPAIR IS ONLY A BAND AID AND THE PROBLEM WILL RETURN BECAUSE A COMPONENT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE COST FOR THIS REPAIR WHICH IS ULTIMATELY A COMPUTER CHIP REPLACEMENT AND DOWNLOAD IS APPROXIMATELY $1100. NHTSA #PE05041. I OWN A VOLVO C70 WITH THE 2.3L HPT. ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 16TH WHILE DRIVING, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILUMINATED. I THEN, AFTER MAKING A STOP WAS GOING TO PROCEED TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE CODE CHECKED. ON MY WAY THERE I WENT TO PULL OUT INTO TRAFFIC FROM A SIDE LOT AND WHEN I PRESSED DOWN THE ACCELERATOR VIRTUALLY NOTHING HAPPENED. THE CAR ALMOST STALLED PULLING INTO FAST MOVING

IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT MY CAR ALTHOUGH BEING A 2001 ONLY HAS 26,000 MILES ON IT AND SHOWS NO SIGN OF CORROSION OR MECHANICAL OBSTRUCTION OF THE THOTTLE MODULE. AFTER READING REVIEWS OF OTHER COMPLAINTS I FELT I SHOULD ADD MINE AS IT COULD HAVE TURNED OUT DIFFERENTLY WITH SUCH UNPREDICTABLE PERFORMANCE. PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE IDLE OF THE CAR WOULD SURGE UP AND DOWN AT AN IDLE BETWEEN 500-1500 RPM'S. TRYING TO PARK THE CAR THE CAR WOULD JUMP FORWARD AT EACH SURGE. A COUPLE OF TIMES AS MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE CAR DIED ON HER, ONE TIME AROUND A CORNER AND SHE COULD HARDLY STEER. AT THOSE TIMES AS SOON AS THE CAR STARTED TO SURGE I BROUGHT TO THE DEALER. BECAUSE IT WAS THE SAME PART THAT WAS REPLACED THERE WAS NO CHARGE. THE DEALER TOLD ME THEY MUST HAVE BEEN DEFECTIVE PARTS. ONE MORE TIME THE CAR DID THE SAME THING AND I RETURNED TO THE DEALER AND ONCE AGAIN THEY SUPPOSEDLY REPLACED THE TC AND TOLD ME THAT THE FLAME TRAP WAS THE CAUSE OF ALL THE PROBLEMS AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. SINCE THEY WANTED ANOTHER $1000 TO REPLACE THAT PART I DECIDED I WOULD DO IT MYSELF. THE DEALER TOLD ME THEY WOULD NOT WARRANTY THE TC ANYMORE. AFTER I REPLACED THE FLAME TRAP, WHICH THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT, 6 MONTHS LATER THE CAR STARTED AGAIN WITH THE SAME PROBLEM ALL AVER AGAIN. THAT'S WHERE I AM AT NOW. ORIGINALLY WHEN THE CAR DIED AND WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER IT COST ME $1390. CAR BEGAN RUNNING POORLY, STALLING ON OCCASION AND HESITATING TO ACCELERATE. UPON SERVICING THE CAR, THE DEALER INFORMED ME THAT THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY WAS BAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER FOR REPLACEMENT, THEY CLEANED IT INSTEAD. I SUBSEQUENTLY RETURNED TO HAVE IT REPLACED. I WAS ON THE RAMP GETTING ON TO THE HIGHWAY, AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR STALLED. I COULD NOT ACCELERATE, AND A SEMI WAS GOING TO HIT THE BACK OF MY CAR BECAUSE I GOT OUT THERE IN FRONT OF HIM AND THEN I CAN'T MOVE. THIS WAS BACK IN MARCH, AND NOW I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. I AM NOT GOING TO PAY ANOTHER $1000 FOR THE SAME THING. I ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT AND I ALREADY PAID OVER $1000 TO GET IT FIXED, AND NOW I HAVE TO COME OUT OF POCKET AGAIN ONLY 4 MONTHS LATER. 1. WIFE AND CHILD DRIVING VEHICLE ON STRAIGHT SECTION OF FREEWAY AT APPROX 60 MPH. 2. VEHICLE SUDDENLY DECELERATED ABRUPTLY CAUSING WIFE TO QUICKLY CHANGE LANES AND EVENTUALLY EXIT FREEWAY VIA OFF RAMP. VEHICLE CONTINUED TO RUN AT "LIMP HOME"MODE (APPROX. 20 MPH) OFF OFF RAMP, ONTO FREEWAY FEEDER, AT IDLE, AND THEN FOR ANOTHER APPROX 20 MILES ON FREEWAY FEEDER ROADS AND CITY ROADS TO RESIDENCE.
