MY CARS ELECTRONIC THROTTLE HAD TO BE REPLACED. THIS WAS DONE UNDER THE WARRANTY PERIOD BUT I'M WRITING TO MAKE YOU AWARE OF THIS FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PEOPLE WHOSE CARS SYSTEMS LASTED SLIGHTLY LONGER, OUT OF WARRANTY. VOLVO KNEW THEY HAD ISSUES WITH DEFECTIVE THROTTLES AND SHOULD STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT. THESE CARS ARE NOT CHEAP AND OWNERS SHOULD NOT BE 'BETA' TESTERS FOR NEW SYSTEMS.*JB

ON WEDNESDAY AUGUST 24,2005 I WAS DRIVING ON THE INDIANA TOLL ROAD TOWARD CHICAGO WHEN MY 2001 VOLVO V70 WHICH HAS LESS THAN 40,000 MILES ON IT, STOPPED RESPONDING TO MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL. A MESSAGE LIGHT THAT SAID "PERFORMANCE REDUCED" CAME ON AND I COASTED WITHOUT ANY CONTROL OVER THE SPEED OR POWER OF THE CAR. I WAS FORTUNATE TO BE CLOSE TO A TOLL BOOTH AND WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SAF

I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND SAT FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO (EVEN THOUGH THE CAR HAS ONLY 39500 MILES ON IT, WHICH IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY). I STARTED THE CAR 10 MINUTES AFTER THIS EVENT, IT STARTED UP FINE, AND THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS OR MESSAGES. I DECIDED WE WOULD BE SAFER GETTING OFF THE TOLL ROAD EVEN THOUGH I WAS TAKING A RISK THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN AGAIN. I DROVE THE REMAINING 15 MILES HOME WITHOUT A PROBLEM (NO MESSAGES OR WARNINGS). I WAS ABLE TO BRING THE CAR TO A MECHANIC WHO IS AN AUTHORIZED VOLVO DEALER, HE CALLED ME ONE HOUR LATER AND TOLD ME THE PROBLEM WAS THE THROTTLE MODULE AND HE WOULD WORK TO FIX IT. BECAUSE I DIDN'T THINK SOMETHING LIKE THIS SHOULD HAPPEN TO A 4 YEAR OLD CAR WITH VERY LITTLE MILEAGE, I DECIDED TO CHECK THE INTERNET TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY NEWS REGARDING VOLVO. I GOGGLED VOLVO THROTTLE AND FOUND TWO REFERENCES TO A NEWLY OPENED INVESTIGATION THAT DESCRIBED A SCENARIO VERY SIMILAR TO WHAT WE EXPERIENCED. I DECIDED TO CHECK THIS WEB SITE TO LEARN MORE. AS OF TODAY, AUGUST 29, 2005, MY CAR IS STILL NOT REPAIRED. THE MECHANIC IS WORKING WITH VOLVO. THE MECHANIC HAS BEEN TOLD SINCE AUG. 25, THAT THE VOLVO COMPUTER, WHICH IS NECESSARY FOR THE THROTTLE REPLACEMENT DOWNLOAD, HAS BEEN DOWN FOR 4 BUSINESS DAYS. INDIANAPOLIS DEALER KEPT THE CAR FOR 3 WEEKS AND REPORTED THAT THEY INADVERTANTLY SOLVED WHATEVER THE PROBLEM WAS ($435). IN THE SUBSEQUENT MONTH & 4500 MILES LATER, ALL APPEARS TO BE WELL.

IN SOME INSTANCES, IT HAS BEEN REPORTED THAT THE VEHICLES WOULD RESTART, AND IN SOME CASES THE VEHICLES WERE TOWED. I HAVE A 1999 VOLVO S70 THAT I BROUGHT IN TO A VOLVO REPAIR SHOP FOR A 105,000 MILE CHECK UP (MOSTLY FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE TIMING BELT). THE CAR WAS OTHERWISE WORKING FINE. FOLLOWING REPLACEMENT OF THE TIMING BELT, TENSIONER, OIL CHANGE, LUBE, ETC. (ALL THE THINGS IN THE STANDARD 105,000 MILE CHECK-UP), THE CAR WOULD NO LONGER IDLE. THE SHOP IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM AS THE ELECTRONIC THROTTL
... E MODULE. IT REMAINS UNCLEAR WHY IT FAILED AS PART OF A ROUTINE CHECK-UP. THE PART WAS REPLACED AND THE REPLACEMENT PART ALSO FAILED TO WORK (IT WOULDN'T ACCEPT THE SOFTWARE). THE SECOND REPLACEMENT THROTTLE MODULE DID WORK AND THE CAR IS NOW WORKING. THE COST OF THIS REPAIR, HOWEVER, WAS $902.00--$551.50 FOR THE PART ALONE. THE REPAIR SHOP SPECIALIZES IN VOLVOS AND INDICATED THAT THIS WAS A FREQUENT PROBLEM, CURRENTLY UNDER INVESTIGATION BY YOUR OFFICE (NTSB ACTION # PE05041). THE TAILGATE LOCK MECHANISM ON MY 1998 V70XC WAGON OFTEN FAILS TO LATCH IN COLD WEATHER. THIS AS NOT BEEN TOO BIG A PROBLEM HERE IN ARIZONA - TYPICALLY OCCURRING IF THE TAILGATE IS OPENED IN THE OCCASIONAL COLD MORNINGS - AS THE DAY WARMS UP THE MECHANISM USUALLY ALWAYS LATCHS CORRECTLY. USUALLY WHEN IT BEGINS NOT TO LATCH A LITTLE CLEANING AND LUBRICANT WOULD CURE IT FOR A WHILE. THIS SOLUTION
... IS NOW PRODUCING LIMITED RESULTS, AND NOT WANTING TO DRIVE THE KIDS TO SCHOOL WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF THEIR BACKPACKS FALLING OUT OF THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE, I HAVE DECIDED TO REPLACE THE LATCH. WHILE SEARCHING THE INTERNET FOR REPLACEMENT INFORMATION, I CAME ACROSS NUMEROUS OWNER REPORTS OF OCCURRENCES OF THIS FAILURE, AS WELL AS A RECALL OF THE MODEL YEAR 2000 VERSION OF THIS VEHICLE FOR THE SAME ISSUE. I MADE A CLOSE INSPECTION OF THE MECHANICAL PART OF THE LATCH, AND IT APPEARS THAT THE TWO ROTATING ELEMENTS THAT FORM THE CATCH & LOCK ASSEMBLY ARE NOT WELL ALIGNED (ARE NOT MOVING IN THE SAME PLANE), POSSIBLY DUE TO THE POOR FORMING AND/OR ASSEMBLY OF THE STAMPED AND FOLDED STEEL HOUSING IN WHICH THESE TWO PIECES ARE LOCATED. THIS MECHANICAL PROBLEM IS LIKELY THE REASON THAT THE CLEANING/LUBRICATION SOLUTION HAS ALWAYS PRODUCED LIMITED RESULTS. IN ALL OTHER FUNCTIONS (POWER LOCK/UNLOCK, LATCH RELEASE, CHILD LOCK, ETC.) THE ASSEMBLY WORKS CORRECTLY, IT IS JUST THE BALKY ROTATION OF THE LOCKING CATCH THAT APPEARS TO BE KEEPING THE LATCH FROM OPERATING PROPERLY. I CALLED VOLVO CUSTOMER CARE TO SEE IF THE 2000 MODEL YEAR RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM HAD BEEN EXTENDED TO MY YEAR VEHICLE, BUT WAS TOLD NO. I BELIEVE THE FAILURE IS DUE TO AN APPARENT DESIGN AND/OR MANUFACTURING DEFICIENCY AND NOT FROM JUST WEAR AND TEAR. DUE TO THE SAFETY ISSUE, I HAVE REPLACED THE LATCH ASSEMBLY, THOUGH I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DETERMINE IF THIS HAS CORRECTED THE PROBLEM UNTIL COLDER WEATHER.Read more
