THIS MORNING I FOUND OUT THAT THEY HAVE ALREADY INSTALLED THE NEW PART AND ARE ROAD TESTING IT TO SEE IF ANY OF THE OTHER DIAGNOSTIC FAILURES HAVE CLEARED UP. THE OTHER KICKER IS THAT I HAD ALREADY TAKEN THE CAR TO A NON-VOLVO MECHANIC THAT DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A MASS AIR SENSOR, OXYGEN SENSOR AND HEAT CONTROL SENSOR. THOSE REPAIRS, TOTALING 650, DID NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. I CAN NOT FIND TOO MUCH FAULT WITH THIS MECHANIC SINCE HE WAS REPLACING PARTS THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC INDICATED WERE BAD. NOW I FIND OUT THAT THE DIAGNOSTICS ARE ALL CONTROLLED BY THE FAILURE CODE FOR THE ETM AND THAT THOSE REPAIRS WERE PROBABLY NOT NECESSARY. MORE THAN A LITTLE FRUSTRATED. I JUST READ ON YOUR WEBSITE AN ACTION SUMMARY REGARDING "FAILURE OF THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL MODULE (ETM)". I DID EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM IN SEPT. 2003 ON MY 2000 S70GLT. THE CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER ON THE HIGHWAY AND SLOW DOWN. I GOT HONKED BY SO MANY OTHER DRIVERS WHEN I WAS TRYING TO PULL OVER TO THE ROAD SIDE. LUCKILY I DID NOT GET HIT BY ANY OTHER CAR. ... ARED AFTER I SHUT AND RESTARTED THE ENGINE. WHEN IT HAPPENED FOR THE SECOND TIME LATER DURING THE SAME WEEK, I DECIDED TO DRIVE TO THE DEALER'S SHOP FOR AN EMERGENCY CHECKOUT. I SHUT AND RESTARTED THE ENGINE BUT STILL THE CAR IS SHAKING AND COULD NOT ACCELERATE TO NORMAL SPEED. SO, I HAD TO TURN ON EMERGENCY LIGHTS AND DROVE VERY SLOWLY TO THE DEALER'S SHOP. THAT DAY I SPENT $1,111 FOR THEM TO REPLACE THE MOTOR THROTTLE MODULE AND IT IS NOT COVERED WITH MANUFACTURER WARRANTY SINCE THE CAR ALREADY HAS 78K MILES ON THE METER. THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY AFTER THE REPAIR. HOWEVER, SINCE THAT TIME IT HAS STARTING PROBLEM FROM TIME TO TIME. IT ALWAYS START OKAY BUT SOMETIMES THE ENGINE SPEED DROP AND STOP AFTER A FEW SECONDS OF RUNNING. THEY COULD NOT FIND OUT WHAT IS WRONG IN THE CAR AND IT IS HARD TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM WHEN I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THEM. THE FUNNY THING IS THAT I JUST HAD A 105K MILES MAINTENANCE FULLY TUNED AT THE DEALER'S SHOP TWO WEEKS AGO AND THEY SAID THE CHECKING AND MAINTENANCE WENT WELL AND THE CAR RUNS NICELY. ELECTRONICE THROTTLE MODULE FAILURE. WHILE DRIVING ON A BUSY MAIN STREET THE CAR SUDDENLY WENT INTO A "LIMP MODE". TOOK IT TO OUR INDEPENDANT VOLVO MECHANIC AND HE HOOKED IT UP TO VADIS. THEN TOLD US THAT IT WAS AN ETM FAILURE. I CALLED VOLVO AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NTOHING THAT THEY COULD DO SINCE THE CAR WAS BOUGHT USED. I PAID OVER ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS TO GET THE ETM REPLACED.

ON 8 APRIL 2004 WE HAD TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY (COST ~$1000). THIS MONTH (AUGUST 2005) WITH 99,000 MILES ON THE CAR, THE SAME SYMPTOMS OCCURED AGAIN. A BRIEF SEARCH OF THE INTERNET REVEALED THAT THIS PARTICULAR COMPONENT IS VERY FAILURE PRONE, CERTAINLY WELL OUTSIDE WHAT COULD BE CONSIDERED ACCEPTABLE. INITIALLY, I TOOK MY 2001 VOLVO V70 STATION WAGON TO THE DEALER BECAUSE THE CRUISE CONTROL FUNCTION WAS NOT WORKING AND THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON. THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER CHECK AND TOLD ME THAT EVERYTHING CAME BACK FINE -EVEN THOUGH IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT WORKING WHEN WE DROVE IT AROUND THE LOT. I PURCHASED A NEW 1999 VOLVO S70 GLT SEDAN. ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO I NOTICED THAT THE HOOD WAS NOT CLOSING. UPON EXAMINATION I DISCOVERED THAT BOTH HOOD LATCHES WERE FAILING BECAUSE OF METAL FATIGUE. MY 2001 VOLVO S80 DIED IN TRAFFIC AS I WAS LEAVING THE POST OFFICE IN TEXARKANA, TX. IT WOULD NOT RESTART AND I LET IT ROLL BACK TO TRY AND GET PARTIALLY OUT OF THE ROADWAY. IT WAS TOWED TO THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP IN SHREVEPORT, LA. THE SERVICE MANAGER CALLED AND TOLD ME IT WAS THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULATOR AND WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. IN TOTAL THE BILL WAS OVER $1500.00 I RESEARCHED ONLINE AND FOUND THAT THIS WAS A HIGH FAILURE RATE PART AND THAT CALIFORNIA HAD FILED A LAWSUIT TO FORCE VOLVO TO DO A RECALL AND ALSO REIMBURSE OWNERS WHO HAD ALREADY PAID TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM FIXED. I CALLED VOLVO AND TALKED TO DONNA, A CUSTOMER SERVICE REP, WHO SAID SHE WOULD TALK TO THE REGIONAL MANAGER TO SEE IS THERE WAS ANYTHING THEY COULD DO FOR ME.
