ALL WARRANTY AND SUBSEQUENT ROUTINE SERVICE WAS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE BY PUTNAM VOLVO THRU MAY 2004. SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE MY WIFE AND I DISCOVER THAT THE REAR HATCH LATCH WOULD NOT PROPER
... LY ENGAGE, FASTEN OR LOCK UNDER COLD TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS MEANING TEMPERATURES NEAR OR BELOW FREEZING (32? F OR 0?C). WE REPORTED THE PROBLEM AT THE FIRST SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE SERVICE AND PERIODICALLY THEREAFTER DURING SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE SERVICE CALLS PARTICULARLY DURING WINTER AND SPRING MONTHS. WE HAVE A CABIN IN THE HIGH SIERRAS WHERE TEMPERATURES ARE BELOW FREEZING DURING WINTER SKI SEASON. THE REAR HATCH LATCH SIMPLY DOES NOT ENGAGE AND THE HATCH CAN NOT BE SECURED CLOSED UNDER COLD CONDITIONS. I RECENTLY DISCOVERED NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 00V239000 CONCERNING THE LATCHES/ LOCKS/LINKAGES:TAILGATE:LATCH DESCRIBING THE PROBLEM WE HAVE REPEATABLE EXPERIENCED WITH OUR VEHICLE AFFLICTING VOLVO OF THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL LINE AS OURS. I CONTACTED THE PUTNAM VOLVO SERVICE AND REQUESTED REPLACEMENT OF THE REAR HATCH LATCH OF OUR VEHICLE BASED UPON IDENTIFIED RECALL CAMPAIGN. THE SERVICE PERSONNEL PERFORMED A VIN SEARCH PROVIDED BY VOLVO, AND ASSERTED THAT OUR VEHICLE DID NOT HAVE THE INCORRECTLY MANUFACTURE REAR HATCH LATCH. IN LATE FEBRUARY 2005, MY WIFE NOTICED THAT THE CHILD SEATS IN OUR 1998 VOLVO V70 WOULD LOOSEN UP WHEN OUR CHILDREN WOULD GET IN OR MOVE IN THEIR SEATS. THESE CHILD SEATS WERE OF THE STATIONARY TYPE AND OF DIFFERENT MAKES. AS ONE OF THE REAR OUTBOARD SEAT BELTS HAD ALREADY BEEN REPLACED AT NO CHARGE FOR A SIMILAR CONCERN IN JUNE 2003, WE VISITED OUR REGIONAL VOLVO DEALERSHIP TO REPORT THE ISSUE. N
... EW BELT ASSEMBLIES WERE ORDERED AND ON MARCH 15TH OF THIS YEAR, BOTH OUTER REAR SEAT BELTS WERE REPLACED. THIS TIME, SINCE WE HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR, I RETRIEVED THE FAILED PARTS. EXAMINATION OF BOTH SEAT BELTS BUCKLES SEEM TO SUGGEST THAT THE FAILURE OF THE BELTS' CHILD SEAT LOCKING TAB, WHICH IS PART OF THE BUCKLE, PREVENTED THE CHILD SEAT FROM STAYING SECURELY HELD IN POSITION. THESE ASSEMBLIES ARE AVAILABLE FOR YOU TO ANALYZE AND DRAW AN EXPERT CONCLUSION. I WAS DRIVING 65 MILES PER HOUR AND MY VEHICLE BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN. I GOT A "REDUCED PERFORMANCE" WARNING, AND MY SPEED REDUCED GRADUALLY. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER AND HE STATED THAT THIS WAS NOT A RECALL ITEM EVENTHOUGH I HAD HEARD OF IT HAPPENING TO OTHER VOLVO OWNERS ON THE NEWS BROADCAST. 1. A TRI AXLE TRUCK OWNED BY DAHN TIBBETT AND MANUFACTURED BY VOLVO MODEL VHD-84F WAS INVOLVED IN THREE SEPARATE FAILURES OF THE WHEEL STUDS WHICH ARE PART OF THE REAR WHEEL HUB ASSEMBLY. THE REFERENCED TRUCK WAS USED ON PAVED ROADWAY HAULING OF SAND, LOAM AND AGGREGATE MATERIAL. ALL HAULING WAS DONE WITH LEGAL LOADS THAT WERE WEIGHED ON REGISTERED SCALES. 2. THE THREE FAILURES ARE DESCRIBED IN

THE STUDS THAT FAILED WERE ON THE LEFT REAR HUB. B. THE SUBJECT VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING ON A HIGHWAY WITH A LOAD AND THE RIGHT REAR TIRES BECAME DETACHED FROM THE TRUCK AT A SPEED OF 55 MPH. THE TWO TIRES WERE RECOVERED AND IT WAS APPARENT THAT THE LUGS WERE STILL TIGHTENED AND THE LUGS HAD SHEARED FROM THE HUB. C. THE SUBJECT VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING ON A SECONDARY PAVED ROAD WITH A LOAD AT A SPEED OF 30 MPH AND SEVEN STUDS SHEARED FROM THE HUB. THE LEFT REAR HUB ASSEMBLY WAS INVOLVED IN THIS EPISODE. PART NUMBER OF HUB IS VOLVO PART # 20478408 RIGHT REAR VOLVO PART # 20478407 LEFT REAR 3. THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES WERE DONE TO CORRECT THE LUG FAILURE. A. THE OLD LUGS WAS REPLACE ALSO 2 RIMS, OIL SEAL B. THE OLD LUGS WERE REPLACED, REPLACED HUB 2 RIMS 2 TIRES, SHOCK AND OIL SEAL C. THE OLD LUGS WERE REMOVED AND REPLACED. SEPTEMBER 2005 1) THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, BUT THE CAR SEEMED TO BE RUNNING FINE, HAD THE CODE CHECKED AT "AUTO ZONE". THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS PROBABLY BAD FUEL BECAUSE IT HAD MULTIPLE CODES THAT WERE ALL RELATED TO THE PROPER AIR/FUEL MIXTURE. THE RECOMMENDED THAT I RUN A COUPLE OF TANKS OF GAS THROUGH IT AND THEN RESET THE CODES AND SEE IF THAT CLEARED UP MY PROBLEM. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THE LIGHT CAME BACK ON BUT WENT OFF PRIOR TO GETTING IT CHECKED, AGAIN THE CAR SEEMED TO BE RUNNING FINE. 2) THE CAR DIED WHILE DRIVING. I WAS ABLE TO SHIFT TO NEUTRAL AND RESTART THE VEHICLE. IT RAN RATHER ROUGH FOR SEVERAL MINUTES. IT THEN BEGAN TO RUN SMOOTHLY WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. THEY TOLD ME THAT IT IS A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE IT FAILS, AND THAT COULD CREATE A DANGEROUS SITUATION. BUT WOULD ALMOST CERTAINLY ADD A TOWING BILL TO MY ALREADY STEEP ESTIMATE OF $1100.00. I ASKED THEM ABOUT A WARRANTY/RECALL. THEY TOLD ME THAT EVEN THOUGH THEY DO SEE THIS PROBLEM "FROM TIME TO TIME" THERE IS NO RECALL AND NO WARRANTY ON THE ONE THAT THEY PUT IN FOR ME IN MAY OF 2004, SINCE THAT WARRANTY WAS ONLY FOR TWELVE MONTHS. *NMRead more

(PRIOR TO THIS STALLING PROBLEM) LAST WEEK I HEARD A HORRIBLE AND SUDDEN NOISE AND ALTHOUGH NO LIGHTS OR WARNING INDICATORS APPEARED I TOOK IT TO HIM IMMEDIATELY. HE HAS FOUND THAT IT HAS A CRACK IN THE LOWER BLOCK WHICH HAS NOW LEFT ME WITH A SHELL OF A CAR AND NO ENGINE. MY REGULAR MECHANIC SAID THAT HE HAS NEVER SEEN THIS ON A CAR AS WELL KEPT AND MAINTAINED AS MINE. HE BELIEVES IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE FAULTY STALLING PROBLEM THAT IS STILL A MYSTERY TO VOLVO COULD BE THE REASONING. I PUT A LOT OF TIME, MONEY AND ENERGY OUT AS A RESULT OF THIS CAR AND MOST IMPORTANTLY RISKED THE LIVES OF MY CHILDREN AND MYSELF WITH THIS PROBLEM. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT THE NHTSA IS DOING TO RESOLVE THIS AND HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD A CRACK LOWER BLOCK AS AN END RESULT?. I FEEL VOLVO SHOULD HAVE TO REPLACE MY ENGINE. HAD PROBLEMS WITH CAR STALLING AT SLOW SPEEDS, BUT ALL OF A SUDDEN WHILE DRIVING ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH AND CAR LOST POWER. WE WERE ABLE TO GLIDE TO SHOULDER WHERE CAR STALLED. I OWN A 1999 VOLVO V70XC. WHILE DRIVING TO WORK ON 9/8/05, SUDDENLY THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE SYSTEM (ETS) LIGHT LIT UP ON MY DRIVER CONTROL PANEL, AND I LOST A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF ACCELERATION AS I WAS DRIVING THROUGH AN INTERSECTION. I QUICKLY PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, AND CHECKED MY OWNER'S MANUAL. AS THE MANUAL INSTRUCTED, I CONTACTED MY MECHANIC FROM THE ROAD AND HE SUGGESTED I
... BRING IT IN RIGHT AWAY. AFTER SEVERAL STOPS & DRIVING ON THE SHOULDER I MADE IT TO MY MECHANIC (15 MILES) WHO WAS ACTUALLY SURPRISED I HAD BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE IT THERE AT ALL. HE TOLD ME THE ETS WOULD PROBABLY NEED TO BE REPLACED AT APPROXIMATELY $950 TO $1150. I WAS FLOORED BY THE NEWS, ESPECIALLY SINCE IT SEEMED TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE. AFTER SOME INVESTIGATING I FOUND OUT THAT THERE IS A CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST VOLVO CONCERNING THE ETS, AND I'M GOING TO COMPLAIN AS MUCH AND AS LOUDLY AS I CAN ABOUT THIS MATTER. I AM EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED--MY CAR IS SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY BECAUSE IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, AND I DON'T FEEL I SHOULD HAVE TO SPEND $1000 TO HAVE IT FIXED IF THERE IS PENDING LITIGATION FOR A CAMPAIGN TO RECALL THE CAR FOR THE ETS.
