SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. COMPUTER CHECK AT SHOP SPECIALIZING IN VOLVOS SHOWED THROTTLE BODY WAS DEFECTIVE. IT REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. OUR SERVICE SHOP ESTIMATES THEY HAVE HAD TO REPLACE APPROXIMATELY 75 OF THESE.*JB

1999 VOLVO V70 ETM (ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE) FAILURE - MY WIFE AND 3 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WERE DRIVING THE CAR ON A MAJOR FOUR LANE AVENUE, IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, WHEN THE ETM FAILED. THE CAR STARTED IDLING ROUGH. WHEN SHE CAME TO A STOP LIGHT, SHE HAD TO PRESS THE BRAKE EXTREMELY HARD TO PREVENT THE CAR FROM LUNGING INTO THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF HER. ... LY GO A MAXIMUM OF 30 MPH, EVEN WITH THE ACCELERATOR PRESSED TO THE FLOOR. LUCKILY, THE CROWN VOLVO DEALERSHIP (GREENSBORO, NC) WAS ON THE SAME STRETCH OF AVENUE. SHE MANAGED TO GET TO THE DEALERSHIP AND GET IT REPAIRED. WE WERE DEVASTATED WHEN THEY TOLD US THE REPAIR WOULD COST $934.00. WE WERE ABLE TO GET THAT REDUCED TO $836.24, BECAUSE WE JUST HAPPEN TO HAVE A $100 DISCOUNT COUPON IN THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT. WE HAD JUST HAD A 60,000 MILE SERVICE PERFORMED ON THE CAR A COUPLE MONTHS AGO. THE ACTUAL MILEAGE WHEN THE ETM FAILED WAS 64,284. WHILE DRIVING THE CAR AT HIGHWAY SPEED (APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH) THE VOLVO V70 T5 LOST POWER AND BEGAN RUNNING EXTREMELY ROUGH. CAR HAD TO BE PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY TO THE BREAK DOWN LANE. NEW VOLVO V70 WAGON. TESTED LAYING REAR SEATS DOWN TO INCREASE CARGO SPACE. RIGHT REAR BELT WOULD NOT EXTEND AND WAS LOCKED IN A RETRACTED POSITION AFTER THE SEAT WAS LAYED DOWN AND RESTORED TO IT'S ORIGINAL OPERATING POSITION. I EXPERIENCED A PROBLEM WITH THREE OUT OF A SET OF FOUR GOODYEAR AMERICAN EAGLE TIRES PURCHASED AT WALMART IN NORTH CAROLINA ON 09/25/2003. THESE WERE 60,000 MILE RATED (TREAD WEAR RATING 420) RADIAL TIRES SIZE: P205/55R16. THESE WERE FOR MY VOLVO S-60...THE MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDED SIZE. I KEPT THE RECOMMENDED PSI @ 38 TIRE PRESSURE. I HAD THEM ROTATED AND REBALANCED SEVERAL TIMES, USUALLY
... AT ABOUT 5,000/6,000 MILE INTERVALS. DURING MY MOST RECENT SERVICE FOR ROTATION AND REBALANCING ON AUGUST 31, THE WALMART STORE IN ROANOKE, VA BROUGHT THIS DEFECT TO MY ATTENTION. THREE OF THE TIRES HAD DEVELOPED SEVERE AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CRACKS ON THE INSIDE SIDEWALL BETWEEN THE TREAD AND THE RIM CIRCLING THE INSIDE OF THE SIDEWALL AND APPEARED TO BE A "BLOW-OUT" POTENTIAL HAZARD. THE MANUFACTURER'S PRODUCTION CODE WAS: DOT PJT24AHR2403. WALMART ADJUSTED AND REPLACED THIS SET WITH THE SAME TIRE THAT THEY HAD IN STOCK. I REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO GOODYEAR AND WAS GIVEN A CLAIM # 789726. I PHONED THEM TO ASK WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO AVOID THIS PROBLEMS OR TO AVOID THIS SAME PROBLEM FOR OCCURRING ON THE CURRENT SET THAT WALMART HAD PUT ON. THEY TOLD ME THAT NOTHING COULD HAVE BEEN DONE OR COULD BE GUARANTEED ON THE NEWER SET. FOR THE LAST COUPLE YEARS I HAVE TAKEN MY VEHICLE TO THE VOLVO SERVICE DEALER FOR REPEATED PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR ENGINE SURGING WHEN COMING TO A STOP. SINCE MID JULY, 05 CAR HAS HAD AN INTERMITTENT STALLING PROBLEM. WHEN YOU STOP, AFTER THE CAR IS AT OPERATING TEMP. IT WILL SEEK IDLE, RUN UP TO ABOUT 1,000 RPM & EITHER DROP TO BELOW 500 RPM OR STALL OUT. IT DOES THIS ON SEVERAL MAKES OF PREMIUM GAS, MOBIL, SHELL, TEXICO/AMACO, AND OR MARATHON. FOR SEVERAL MONTHS PRIOR TO FAILURE, ENGINE TORQUE WOULD FLUCTUATE AT STEADY HIGHWAY SPEEDS WITH OR WITHOUT CRUISE CONTROL ON. ALTHOUGH IT DID NOT AFFECT THE SPEED OF THE VEHICLE VISIBLY, I COULD FEEL IT IN THE SEAT OF MY PANTS.
