2000 VOLVO S70 NEEDED A THROTTLE BODY MODULE INSTALLED. I UNDERSTAND THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD A NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT TIS MODULE. I ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT CALIFORNIA IS ASKING VOLVO TO EITHER HAVE A RECALL OR EXTEND THE WARRANTY. *NM

I AM AN OWNER OF A 2001 VOLVO XC70. IT RECENTLY BROKE DOWN IN NYC WITH A "DECREASED PERFORMANCE" MESSAGE SHOWN ON THE COMPUTER AS WELL AS JERKING AND LAG IN ALL FORWARD MOVEMENT. THE CAR WAS SEEN AT MARTIN'S MANHATTAN AFTER BEING TOWED. THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG WHEN PLUGGED INTO THE COMPUTER. DROVE THE CAR HOME FROM NYC TO RICHMOND VA. THE VERY FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED TO ME WAS 2.5 YRS AGO(JULY, 2003) THE DAY AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR AT 62 K MILES. THE ENGINE STALLED WHEN I WAS DRIVING @40-50 MILES/HR FOR 6 MILES. (3) IN THE FIRST DAY AT VOLVO DEALER SERVICE (@ 96TH ST., INDIANAPOLIS) COULD NOT DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM: NO ERROR CODE WAS FOUND. IN THE SECOND DAY, UPON MY REQUEST, THE SERVICE PERSONNEL DROVE THE CAR FOR TWO OR THREE MILES AND THE CAR STALLED AGAIN. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY FOUND THE ERROR CODE, AND DETERMINED IT RELATED TO AIR INTAKE / THROTTLE. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THE REPAIR WOULD BE UNDER VOLVO EXTENDED WARRANTY OF THROTTLE CLEANING, WHICH I WAS NOT NOTIFIED BUT FOUND THROUGH NHTSA WEBSITE, AND MADE INQUIRY TO THE SERVICE PERSONNEL. TODAY IS THE THIRD DAY OF CAR IN THE GARAGE, AND I HAVE NOT HEARD ANY WORD FROM VOLVO DEALER. SO, WHEN THE WIRING HARNESS FOR THE HEADLIGHTS WAS PUT TOGETHER, THEY DID NOT PLACE THE WIRES NICE AND NEAT IN THERE TO WHERE THERE WAS NO WAY THEY WOULD TOUCH. WHEN I CAME TO THIS CONCLUSION, I PUT BLACK ELECTRICAL TAPE AROUND THE TWO WIRES (POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE) IN EACH HEADLIGHT COMPARTMENT SO THAT NOTHING ABOUT THE WIRE WOULD TOUCH AND OBVIOUSLY HAD TO PUT NEW BULBS IN. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR TO A REPUTABLE REPAIR SHOP WHICH DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A TURBO FAILURE (FAILURE #2). THE ENGINE WAS CLEANED AS BEST THE SHOP COULD AND THE TURBO REPLACED AT SUBSTANTIAL EXPENSE. WHEN THE REPAIR WAS COMPLETED, I DROVE THE CAR 200 MILES TO BRING IT HOME WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE NEXT MORNING IT BEGAN TO MAKE ODD NOISES. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED REPLACEMENT AND THE TURBO HAD BROKEN (FAILURE #3)--PRICE TAG $6600. ... RS. THE CAR WAS TESTED BY A VOLVO DEALER CONFIRMING ABS CONTROL MODULE FAILEDURE. VOLVO CHARGES A TOTAL $650 TO REPLACE THE UNIT. THE "BRICKBOARD" OWNERS GROUP SUGGESTED A REPAIR SHOP IN CALIFORNIA THAT RESOLDERS THE CIRCUIT BOARD, REPLACES AND UPGRADES FAILED COMPONENTS, TESTS & RETURNS IT FOR $130 PLUS SHIPPING. WE HAD THE OLD BOARD REPAIRED, SINCE A NEW EXACT REPLACEMENT BOARD FROM VOLVO WOULD HAVE THE SAME FAILURE AFTER ANOTHER 5 YEARS. THE REPAIRED ABS CONTROL UNIT HAS BEEN REINSTALLED & THE CAR NOW WORKS PROPERLY, WITH FULL ABS AND TRACS CONTROL. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST PRINTED CIRCUIT FAILURE FROM VOLVO. OUR 1993 VOLVO 940 TURBO HAD TWO BOARD FAILURES: 1, THE RELAY BASE BOARD SOLDER CRACKED, AND RESULTED IN THE OVERDRIVE RELAY NOT WORKING; 2, CRUISE CONTROL OPERATED ERRATICALLY, DUE TO BAD BOARD SOLDER. BOTH OF THESE BOARDS WERE REPAIRED BY OUR LOCAL SERVICE SHOP. WE ARE VERY CONCERNED THAT TWO CRITICAL SAFETY ELEMENTS - THE ABS SYSTEM AND TRACTION CONTROL - ARE FAILING IN A RELATIVELY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, & BECAUSE OF A FAILURE OF WHAT SHOULD BE A SIMPLE ASSEMBLY OF TESTED PARTS. FURTHER, WE ARE MOST DISTURBED THAT VOLVO'S REMEDY IS A VERY EXPENSIVE REPLACEMENT, WITH THE SAME FAILURE PRONE PART.
