PURCHASED A 1999 VOLVO S80 IN JUNE 2000. SINCE THAT TIME ON DOZENS OF OCCASIONS WARNING MESSAGES HAVE CONSTANTLY APPEARED ON THE DASH DISPLAY, I.E. FUEL FILLER CAP LOOSE, EMISSION SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED, AND ENGINE SYSTEM SERVICE URGENT. WE HAD THE VEHICLE CHECKED BY VOLVO OF ANNAPOLIS FOR THIS PROBLEM AND WERE INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. SINCE THEN WE HAVE HAD THE S80 CHECKED BY A REP

WHEN THE ERROR MESSAGE ENGINE SYSTEM SERVICE URGENT APPEARS THE CRUISE CONTROL DISCONNECTS AND WILL NOT RE-ENGAGE. IN EARLY MAY, 2006, MY CAR ENGINE SHUT DOWN BY ITSELF. THIS OCCURRED THREE TIMES. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY KEPT IT FOR TWO DAYS. THE DAY AFTER I PICKED IT UP(MAY 11TH, THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. I NARROWLY MISSED HITTING SEVERAL CARS WHILE ATTEMPTING TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WHEN THE CAR COOLED DOWN, I WAS ABLE TO START I
... T AGAIN AND MANAGED TO GET OFF THE FREEWAY. THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE I MANAGED TO GET THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE FACTORY INSPECTED THE CAR AND HELD IT TEN DAYS. THE SERVICE MAN CALLED ME AND STATED THE FACTORY WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND WAS REPLACING MY TRANSMISSION. I WAS ABLE TO PICK UP MY CAR ON MAY 22 AND WAS TOLD THE PROBLEM HAD BEEN CORRECTED. SINCE THEN, THE ENGINE HAS SHUT DOWN ON THREE OCCASIONS, EACH TIME ON THE FREEWAY. I REPORTED THIS TO VOLVO CUSTOMER SERVICE ON MAY 26TH. WHILE DRIVING HOME ON THE FREEWAY YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN AGAIN AND I NARROWLY AVERTING A MAJOR ACCIDENT. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE IT IS CURRENTLY PARKED. MY WIFE REFUSES TO EITHER DRIVE THE CAR OR RIDE INTO IT. WE WERE LUCKY THAT WE DID NOT TAKE THE CAR TO LOS ANGELES AND COULD HAVE BEEN STRANDED IN THE DESERT OR WORSE. THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT COIL SPRING ON OUR 2001 VOLVO XC70 SNAPPED EITHER WHILE THE CAR WAS DRIVEN INTO THE DRIVEWAY OR WHILE SITTING OVERNIGHT. BACKING THE CAR OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY INTO A DIP PRODUCED A NOISE THAT INDICATED A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE FRONT SUSPENSION. UPON EXAMINING THE FRONT SUSPENSION I DISCOVERED THE BROKEN COIL SPRING. THE LOWER PORTION OF THE SPRINGS POWDER COAT HAD PEELED AND

THE BROKEN EDGES OF THE SPRING SHOWED SIGNS OF RUST PENETRATING INTO THE INTERIOR METAL OF THE SPRING, SUGGESTING THAT THE SPRING MAY HAVE BEEN CRACKED FOR SOME TIME BEFORE FAILING. SINCE THE SPRING IS VERY CLOSE TO THE TIRE THERE COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS SITUATION IF THE BROKEN EDGE OF THE SPRING HAD CONTACTED THE TIRE AT HIGH SPEED. WHEN I EXAMINED THE UNBROKEN PASSENGER SIDE SPRING I FELT ROUGHNESS UNDER THE POWDER COATING ALONG THE LOWER PART OF THE SPRING, SUGGESTING THAT CORROSION IS ALSO TAKING PLACE IN THE SAME AREA ON THAT SPRING. I PURCHASED A 2000 VOLVO S80 FROM CARMAX IN FEB. 2006. THE CAR ONLY HAD 26000 MILES ON IT SO I THOUGHT IT WAS A GREAT DEAL. I CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER TO SEE IF ANY AND ALL RECALLS HAD BEEN PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. THEY SAID THE ONLY THING NEEDED TO BE DONE WAS TO HAVE THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE SYSTEM TO BE UPGRADED IN THE CARS COMPUTER. ON 5-11-06 THE VOLVO DEALER PERFORMED THE UPGRADE.

NOW I DRIVE THE CAR HOME ON 5-16-06. AFTER TWO HOURS OF THE CAR SITTING AT MY HOUSE I ATTEMPT TO GO SOMEWHERE BUT THE CAR STARTS AND IMMEDIATELY BEGINS TO REV LIKE BEFORE AND THEN DIES. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO TAKE MY VOLVO TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE PARKING BRAKE CHECKED. THE NEXT MORNING I CALLED VOLVO CORPORATE CRITICAL CARE DEPARTMENT AND EXPRESSED MY SAFETY CONCERN ABOUT MY VOLVO. I WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAKE MY VOLVO TO GET CHECKED OUT AND I INFORMED HER THAT I HAD AN APPOINTMENT FOR NOVEMBER 21, 2005. I WAS TOLD A SPECIALIST WOULD LOOK THE CAR OVER. DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR MAKES LOUD POPPING NOISES WHEN OPENED, CLOSED. MIDDLE DOOR HINGE (LARGER ONES ABOVE AND BELOW; LOCATED JUST BELOW WIRING HARNESS) HAS BROKEN AWAY FROM FRAME OF CAR BODY BECAUSE OF FAULTY WELDING.
