A COLLEAGUE AND I OFTEN CARPOOL TO WORK. SHE PICKED ME UP IN HER NEW VOLVO VAN - PURCHASED FROM DEALER IN LATE 2006. THE COLLEAGUE, GOT OUT TO CHAT WITH MY SISTER WHILE I GATHERED THE THINGS I NEEDED TO TAKE TO WORK. THE PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW WAS HALF-WAY OPEN BECAUSE IT HAD BEEN A MILD JANUARY DAY IN NJ. THE DOOR, THOUGH, WAS LOCKED, AND I WANTED TO GET INSIDE THE CAR READY TO BE ON OUR WAY.
... I LEANED MY HEAD INSIDE AND PUSHED THE BUTTON I THOUGHT WAS THE DOOR LOCK. INSTEAD, I ACTIVATED THE POWER WINDOW WHICH CONTINUED TO CLOSE ON MY NECK EVEN AFTER I RELEASED IT. WE BEGAN REPORTING PROBLEMS WITH HESITATION AND SURGING IN OUR 2001 S80 T6 SEVERAL YEARS AGO TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT OUR NEAREST DEALER, SILL TERHAR MOTORS IN BROOMFIELD, COLORADO. THEY TRIED REPLACING A TURBO VALVE AND A SOFTWARE UPGRADE THAT WAS AVAILABLE AT THE TIME, AND WE WERE TOLD THAT USING THE HIGHEST OCTANE FUEL WOULD BE NECESSARY IN ORDER TO PREVENT THE HESITATION. GIVEN THE INCONVENIENCE OF THE DEALERS LOCATION AND THAT THEY HAD NOT SEEMED TO BE ABLE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, WE HAD THE VEHICLE SERVICED FOR A WHILE AT AN INDEPENDENT VOLVO MECHANIC. LAST FALL THE EMISSIONS AND CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHTS TURNED ON, AND THEY REPLACED AN OXYGEN SENSOR AND/OR MASS AIR SENSOR. THE WARNING LIGHTS TURNED ON AGAIN, AND THEY RECOMMENDED THAT WE GO TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE DEALER. WE LEARNED OF THE "EXTENDED WARRANTY" VOLVO WAS BEGINNING TO OFFER AS A RESULT OF THE PROBLEMS IN THE DESIGN OF THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE. IN EARLY DECEMBER WE LEFT THE VEHICLE WITH THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT SILL TERHAR, AND THEY DID THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE. WITHIN DAYS THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING HORRIBLY AND WAS STALLING IN INTERSECTIONS. SILL TERHAR HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED AND REPORTED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO A HOSE THAT HAD NOT BEEN FASTENED SECURELY. DUE TO TRAVEL DURING THE HOLIDAYS AND THE MULTIPLE SNOWSTORMS IN COLORADO IN LATE DECEMBER, WE DROVE THIS VEHICLE IN EARLY JANUARY AFTER HAVING PUT ONLY ABOUT 100 MILES ON THE VEHICLE SINCE THE TIME THAT IT WAS REPORTEDLY FULLY CLEARED OF PROBLEMS WITH REGARD TO THE ETM, THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT TURNED ON AGAIN. WE RETURNED TO SILL TERHAR, AND THEY SAID THAT THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO A FAULTY RIGHT FRONT OXYGEN SENSOR. THEY WERE CERTAIN THAT THIS WAS UNRELATED TO THE ETM PROBLEM. CAR WAS SERVICED ON 25-OCT AT ~49K MILES. NO COMPUTER UPDATES WERE DONE TO THE VEHICLE. 12-DEC, I HAD NEW TIRES PUT ON THE CAR. 13-DEC THE CAR REPORTED "REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE" AND OIL LIGHT CAME ON. SM INFORMED ME THAT THE "MAIN" COMPUTER HAD FAILED, "TWO OTHER COMPUTERS" HAD "STOPPED COMMUNICATING" AND THE "THROTTLE MODULE" FAILED. HE TOLD ME THEY COULD FIX THE CAR FOR ~$300 WITH COMPUTER UPGRADES. HE DIDN'T KNOW IF THAT WOULD FIX THE THROTTLE MODULE AS WELL. IT WAS FIXED IN THEIR OPINION AFTER THEY ROAD TESTED IT FOR ~7 MILES. HE SAID AVAILABLE COMPUTER UPGRADES ARE ALWAYS APPLIED AT THEIR DEALERSHIP WHEN THE CAR IS UNDER WARRANTY BUT NEVER WHEN THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY UNLESS THERE'S A PROBLEM. WAS TOLD MY EXTENDED WARRANTY DID NOT COVER THE UPGRADES AND WAS CHARGED ~$300. I ASKED IF THE UPGRADES COULD HAVE BEEN APPLIED 25-OCT SINCE I WAS UNDER WARRANTY. I HAVE A 2001 VOLVO XC70. THE TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN CLUNKING INTO AND OUT OF GEAR IN THE 20 - 40 MPH ZONE SINCE I HIT 95000 MILES. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER WHO SIMPLY REPROGRAMMED THE CAR BUT THE ISSUE IS NOT RESOLVED. THE CAR HESITATES WHEN I STEP ON THE GAS. SOMETIMES IT GOES AND OTHER TIMES IT DOES NOT. PROBLEM HAS RETURNED AS WELL A SPONTANEOUS STALLING, AND VERY ERRATIC VARIANCE IN THROTTLE PEDAL POSITION AND ACCELERATION.
