IT APPEARS MY STORY HAS BEEN WRITTEN HERE BY MANY OTHERS. I OWN A 2004 XC90 T6. LAST SATURDAY MY HUSBAND RETURNED HOME IN OUR XC90 AND TOLD ME HE HAD CAR TROUBLE. THE CAR WAS SLUGGISH AND THE TRANSMISSION SERVICE URGENT LIGHT HAD COME ON. I TOOK IT TO OUR VOLVO CERTIFIED MECHANIC TWO DAYS LATER WHO SAID HE HAD 3 OTHER XC90'S IN DURING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER FOR THE SAME THING. HIS COURSE OF ACTION
... WAS TO FLUSH THE TRANNY, REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID (W/VOLVO SYNTHETIC) AND UPDATE THE SOFTWARE. I WAS TOLD IF THAT DIDN'T REMEDY THE SITUATION A NEW TRANSMISSION WOULD BE NEEDED. AFTER HAVING THIS WORK DONE (COST $350) I DROVE IT HOME. THE NEXT MORNING AS I DROVE UP A MILD INCLINE AT ABOUT 25 MPH THE CAR SEEMED TO BE UNABLE TO SHIFT. WHEN IT FINALLY DID ALL OF THE INDICATOR LIGHTS FOR THE TRANSMISSION WERE BACK ON. THE TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING. I CALLED THE MECHANIC BACK AND WAS TOLD THAT A NEW VOLVO TRANNY WOULD BE NEEDED AT A COST OF BETWEEN $4500-$5200. UNFORTUNATELY, IT WILL BE THE SAME DEFECTIVE/INADEQUATE TRANNY THAT IS ALREADY USED IN THE 03/04 XC90'S. THIS IS NOT MY FIRST VOLVO. WE HAVE BOUGHT FROM THEM BEFORE AND WERE HAPPY. IT SEEMS THIS IS NOT JUST AN INTERMITTENT ISSUE, IT IS CHRONIC AND VOLVO NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. THIS PROBLEM SUBSTANTIALLY AFFECTS THE USE AND VALUE OF THIS CAR. I CAN'T SELL IT THE WAY IT IS SO I AM ESSENTIALLY TRAPPED INTO SPENDING THIS ADDITIONAL $5K. THE OEM JACK THAT CAME WITH MY VOLVO FAILED MISERABLY WHEN I HAD A FLAT TIRE. THE JACK WAS NEVER USED BEFORE THIS INCIDENT. WHILE THE JACK WAS PLACED ON A LEVEL SURFACE AND WAS COMPLETELY VERTICAL, THE FORCE NECESSARY TO SPIN THE JACK HANDLE CAUSED THE JACK TO VERY SLOWLY SLIDE SIDEWAYS IN AN INCREASINGLY PRECARIOUS POSITION. I STOPPED AND STARTED OVER SEVERAL TIMES ONLY TO RENDER THE SAME RESULT.
... AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, I WAS ABLE RAISE THE CAR HIGH ENOUGH TO ATTEMPT REMOVAL OF THE FLAT TIRE. THE JACK HOWEVER WAS VERY UNSTABLE. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE THE TIRE, THE JACK FAILED AND THE CAR FELL TO THE GROUND. LUCKILY, THE FLAT TIRE WAS STILL ON THE CAR. SINCE I WAS IN MY PAVED DRIVEWAY, I WAS ABLE TO USE ANOTHER JACK. SINCE IT WASN'T A VOLVO JACK, I WAS ABLE TO USE WOODEN BLOCKS TO CRIB OR SECURE THE CAR BY STACKING WOOD UNDER THE CAR AS THE JACK RAISED THE CAR SO IT WOULDN'T FALL OFF THE JACK. THE VOLVO JACK IS BENT AND UNSAFE TO USE AGAIN, EVEN THOUGH IT WASN'T SAFE TO USE THE FIRST TIME. I AM REPORTING IT AS I HAVE FOUND MANY OTHER VOLVO OWNERS ON THE WEB WHO HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE WITH THEIR VOLVOS. *TRRead more

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 VOLVO S60. THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF TWICE WHILE APPROACHING A STOP SIGN AND WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE SLOWED DOWN AND LOST ALL POWER, INCLUDING THE BRAKES. THE VEHICLE WILL BE TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 94,000.
