THE TRANSMISSION IN MY 2005 VOLVO XC 90, FAILED IN TRAFFIC ON DEC. 18TH. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE. THE CAR ONLY HAD 63,200 MILES ON IT AND HAD BEEN REGULARLY SERVICED. ON JANUARY 6, 2009, MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER WERE DRIVING ON I-20 WHEN THEY HEARD A "THUMP" AND THEN EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS. THE ENGINE NEVER STOPPED, BUT THE RADIO, WINDSHIELD WIPERS, DOOR LOCKS, DASHBOARD AND EVERYTHING SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING. THEY CONTINUED TO DRIVE AND ABOUT 5 MINUTES LATER IT HAPPENED AGAIN. 1. EVENTS = REGULAR TIRE ROTATION IN SEPTEMBER 2008. TECHNICIAN POINTED OUT TO ME THE CORROSION AND CRACK/FAILURE IN BOTH REAR COIL SPRINGS. MILEAGE ON THE VEHICLE ABOUT 68,000 AT TIME OF DISCOVERY ON MY 2000 VOLVO S40. 2. CORRODED AND CRACKED REAR COIL SPRINGS (BOTH). THE CORROSION AND CRACK WERE ALMOST IN THE SAME LOCATION WITH THE SAME AMOUNT OF CORROSION NEAR THE BOTTOM (THE FIRST HALF-MOON C
... URVE) OF BOTH SPRINGS WHERE THEY ARE SEATED/BRACED. 3. OCTOBER 2008 - TOOK VEHICLE TO LOCAL VOLVO DEALER FOR EVALUATION. THEY ORDERED NEW REAR COIL SPRINGS. I RETURNED A WEEK LATER TO HAVE THE NEW COIL SPRINGS INSTALLED AT THE COST OF APPROXIMATELY $550, PLUS ALIGNMENT. THE COST OF THE COIL SPRINGS WAS APPROXIMATELY $220 FOR BOTH. THE REMAINDER WAS LABOR. I WROTE A LETTER TO VOLVO OF NORTH AMERICA ABOUT THIS CONDITION. I INCLUDED PHOTOS, AND I REQUESTED A REFUND. VOLVO CUSTOMER SERVICE OF NORTH AMERICA CALLED ME ON NOVEMBER 6, 2008, AND DENIED MY REQUEST. I WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY, AND THE ENGINEERS DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM AS AN "ANOMALY," NOT A DEFECT. SINCE I HAVE A LOW MILEAGE VEHICLE, I LIVE IN A "SALT STATE," AND CERTAIN SAABS IN SALT STATES ARE BEING INVESTIGATED FOR FRONT COIL SPRING FAILURE, IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO KNOW WHETHER THERE IS A CONNECTION WITH THESE VEHICLES AND THE REAR COIL SPRINGS. I HAVE LOANED THE FAILED REAR COIL SPRINGS TO A PROFESSOR OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING TO USE IN HIS UPPER LEVEL DESIGN CLASS TO USE AS AN EXAMPLE OF A FAILURE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC70. THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD BANGING ON THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING IN REVERSE. THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE SUSPENSION COIL SPRING FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE REPAIR SHOP AND THEY REMOVED THE FRONT STRUTS. I HAVE HAD 3 COMPLETE TRANSMISSION FAILURES IN A VOLVO XC90 T6 WITHOUT WARNING REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION. THE FIRST TWO FAILED ON THE HIGHWAY ALMOST CAUSING AN ACCIDENT AS THE TRANSMISSION CUT OUT COMPLETELY. THE LAST ONCE OCCURRED ON A BUSY 2 LANE HIGHWAY WHILE MAKING A TURN ACROSS TRAFFIC. THE FIRST ONE FAILED AT 28,000 MILES, THE SECOND AT 55,000 MILES AND THE THIRD AT 80,000

THE FIRST ONE WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY WITHOUT AN ARGUMENT, THE 2ND ONE WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY WITH AN ARGUMENT, AND THE THIRD ONE VOLVO WON'T EVEN TALK ABOUT REPLACING FOR FREE AND WANTS TO CHARGE OVER 5K, WITHOUT GIVING ANY ASSURANCES ANOTHER 25K WON'T GO BY AND IT WON'T FAIL AGAIN. THEY DON'T CARE THAT THE "SAFEST" CAR CAN INSTANTLY BECOME A DEATH TRAP. A TRANSMISSION ISN'T A DISPOSABLE ITEM THAT SHOULD FAIL EVERY 25K, THEY SHOULD LAST AT LEAST 100K AND NOT CUT OUT IN THESE DANGEROUS FASHIONS WITHOUT WARNING. THE THIRD ONE THERE WEREN'T EVEN ANY WARNING LIGHTS. THE COMPANY SHOULD FIX THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM AT NO COST TO THE OWNERS WITH A SOLUTION THAT GIVES THE TRANSMISSION A LIFE SIMILAR TO OTHER VEHICLES IN IT'S CLASS.
