THE CAR HAD FUEL PUMP REPLACED ON 06/30/11 AND AGAIN (UNDER PARTS WARRANTY) AFTER BEING TOWED ON 05/14/13. ON JUNE 10, 2013 THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO DEALER AGAIN WITH FUEL SUPPLY ISSUES. AFTER MUCH ANALYSIS, IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE FUEL TANK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE PRICE QUOTED FOR THE PART WAS $2447 AND LABOR $1400. ... AT IS INTEGRAL TO THE TANK (CANNOT BE REPLACE SEPARATELY) THAT WAS POPPING LOOSE UNDER PRESSURE. AFTER MUCH DEBATE WITH VOLVO OF NORTH AMERICA, THEY GOT APPROVAL TO GIVE ME THE PART AT HALF PRICE--STILL $1223 PLUS AROUND $900 LABOR. IN DISCUSSING THIS WITH THE SHOP FOREMAN, HE HAD TALKED TO VOLVO REGIONAL PEOPLE ONE THE LOOKOUT FOR FLAWS. THEY WERE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM, AND ALTHOUGH IT WAS RARE IT HAD HAPPENED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS TO METAL TALKS THAT ARE 'CALIFORNIA' SPECS. ALTHOUGH VOLVO IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, THEY HAVE NOT NOTIFIED OWNERS OR DONE A RECALL BUT ARE REQUIRING THOSE WITH THE DEFECTIVE PART TO DISCOVER IT AND PAY FOR REPAIRS ON THEIR OWN. DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY THERE WAS A SUDDEN LOSS OF TIRE PRESSURE. THIS WAS CAUSED BY A FAILURE OF THE TIRE PRESSURE VALVE DUE TO CORROSION OF THE METAL. THE NEW VALVES ARE MADE OF PLASTIC. HOWEVER, THE ISSUE IS THAT ONE DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM UNTIL IT OCCURS. IF THE FRONT TIRE HAD LOSS PRESSURE THERE MAY HAVE BEEN A WORSE INCIDENT. THIS HAD PREVIOUSLY OCCURRED ABOUT 6 MONTHS
... EARLIER WITH ANOTHER TIRE. I STOPPED TO ADD AIR TO A TIRE AND DISCOVERED THAT THE VALVE WAS PUSHED INTO THE TIRE WHEN TRIED TO APPLY THE AIR HOSE. THE TIRE VALVE WAS REPLACED, BUT I DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING OF IT AT THE TIME. THIS TIME AROUND I HAD ALL OF THE ORIGINAL VALVES REPLACED, AND FOUND THAT THE DEALERS IN THE AREA ARE ALL OUT OF STOCK WITH THE VALVES, SO IT APPEARS TO BE A UNIVERSAL PROBLEM. I BELIEVE THAT THE ORIGINAL VALVE CAN BE CHARACTERIZED BY A DEFECTIVE DESIGN WITH RESPECT TO THE MATERIALS USED. AS A RESULT, I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE TWO DAMAGED TIRES, AS WELL AS FOUR TIRE PRESSURE VALVES DUE TO THIS ISSUE. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE QUITE A BIT AND HAVE DISCOVERED A RECALL INVOLVING THE CONNECTION FOR THE CLOCK SPRING IN THE STEERING WHEEL FOR MY 2010, BUT MORE TELLING IS A RECALL AFFECTING 17,000 VEHICLES ENCOMPASSING MANY MODELS MY 2012 FOR A WIRING PROBLEM WHERE THE SEAT HARNESS MAY BECOME DISCONNECTED WHEN MOVING THE SEAT. PERHAPS EVEN THOUGH MY VEHICLE IS A 2010 IT STILL COULD BE THE SAME PROBLEM SINCE NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED BETWEEN THESE MODEL YEARS. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE QUITE A BIT AND HAVE DISCOVERED A RECALL INVOLVING THE CONNECTION FOR THE CLOCK SPRING IN THE STEERING WHEEL FOR MY 2010, BUT MORE TELLING IS A RECALL AFFECTING 17,000 VEHICLES ENCOMPASSING MANY MODELS MY 2012 FOR A WIRING PROBLEM WHERE THE SEAT HARNESS MAY BECOME DISCONNECTED WHEN MOVING THE SEAT. NO INJURIES, BUT THIS COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE DEFECT HAPPENED AT 45 MONTHS, AND 51,000 MILES. SUBSEQUENTLY ALL STEMS AND SENSORS HAD TO BE REPLACED PRIOR TO 48 MONTHS. MY VEHICLE'S FUEL GAUGE HAS NEVER WORKED CORRECTLY. WE HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE IN TO GET IT REPAIRED 4 TIMES IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS. THE ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN FIXED.
