... OBSERVED THE REAR OF DRIVER'S MOTORCYCLE COLLAPSING ONTO THE REAR WHEEL. THIS CAUSED THE WHEEL TO LOCK UP, WHICH IN TURN CAUSED DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE MOTORCYCLE AND BE EJECTED ONTO THE ROADSIDE. DRIVER SUSTAINED INJURIES AND SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO MOTORCYCLE. SUBSEQUENT INSPECTION OF THE MOTORCYCLE REVEALED THAT THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT WAS FAILURE OF THE DROP LINKAGE PLATES, WHICH CAUSED THE SUSPENSION TO FAIL AND THE MOTORCYCLE TO COLLAPSE ONTO ITS REAR WHEEL. INSPECTION OF THE PLATES SUGGESTS THAT THEY SUFFER FROM A SAFETY DEFECT THAT CAUSES THEM TO ELONGATE AND FRACTURE UNDER ORDINARY DRIVING CONDITIONS, WHICH IN TURN CAUSES CATASTROPHIC LOCKING/FAILURE OF THE AFFECTED MOTORCYCLES' REAR WHEELS. FACTUAL INVESTIGATION AND FURTHER RESEARCH INDICATES THAT NUMEROUS DRIVERS OF OTHER TRIUMPH MOTORCYCLES HAVE EXPERIENCED CRASHES AS A RESULT OF THE SAME DEFECT. AFFECTED MODELS APPEAR TO BE, BUT MAY NOT BE LIMITED TO: 2006, 2007, 2008, AND CERTAIN 2009 TRIUMPH DAYTONA 675 AND STREET TRIPLE 675 MOTORCYCLES. FUEL TANK HAS SWELLED TO THE POINT THAT IT WILL NOT FIT SECURELY ON MOTORCYCLE. TRIUMPH HAS REPLACED FUEL TANKS ON LATER MODELS UNDER WARRANTY, BUT ONLY WITH THE SAME PLASTIC TANK. REPLACEMENT TANKS ALSO SWELL AFTER REPEATED ETHANOL USE. TRIUMPH USED STEEL TANKS AFTER THE 2008 MODEL YEAR THAT ARE A DIRECT REPLACEMENT, BUT REFUSE TO USE THEM AS A REPLACEMENT. SO, I FIGURE THIS MIGHT BE A NEW CENTER STAND DESIGN FLAW, I'VE PUT MANY MOTORCYCLES ON CENTER STANDS BEFORE WITHOUT BEING INJURED IN THE PROCESS; MAYBE A RE-DESIGN NOT THOROUGHLY TESTED AFTER THE PREVIOUS RECALL, THAT ISN'T LEVERED PROPERLY FOR APPROPRIATE HUMAN FORCE TO DO IT WITHOUT POSSIBILITY OF INJURY, THUS SHOULD BE REPORTED FOR FURTHER SCRUTINY TO PREVENT SIMILAR INJURY TO OTHERS. WHAT WAS PARTICULARLY SCARY ABOUT THIS INCIDENT IS THAT MY THROTTLE WAS STUCK IN THE "OPEN" POSITION AND I HAD TO TWIST THE GRIP REALLY HARD TO GET IT UNSTUCK, WHICH BROKE THE ASSEMBLY. THANKFULLY I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER SAFELY. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED, TRIUMPH REPLACED THIS UNDER WARRANTY. THE SECOND TIME, THEY COVERED THE COSTS AS WELL FOR CUSTOMER GOODWILL, FOR WHICH I AM GRATEFUL. IN READING THE TRIUMPH FORUMS, IT IS COMMON FOR THIS ASSEMBLY TO BREAK. ... N BUBBLE FORMATIONS THROUGHOUT THE TANK. I FIRST NOTICED THIS IN 2005 ON ONE PART OF THE TANK THAT WAS HIDDEN AND WAS NOT ON THE FINISHED SURFACE. THE ISSUE WAS BOUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE AUTHORIZED DEALER I WAS HAVING DO 12K MILEAGE SERVICE AT THAT TIME. HE DID NOT TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY AND SAID AT THAT TIME TRIUMPH WOULD NOT COVER THIS AS A WARRANTY ISSUE. CURRENTLY I AM EXPERIENCING THE PAINT SEPARATING IN BUBBLE FORMATIONS THROUGHOUT ON EXPOSED FINISHED SURFACES OF THE GAS TANK. AS OF THIS DATE AFTER PIERCING THE VARIOUS LOCATIONS THERE HAS NOT BEEN GAS LEAKING, THOUGH THE GAS TANK HAS BEEN EMPTIED OF GAS DUE TO HAVING BEEN STORED LONG TERM. SO I CANNOT SAY 100% THAT THE TANK IS NOT LEAKING AT THOSE LOCATIONS ALSO.
