2012 Prius in very good condition with 180k miles- only 12 years old. Driving on back roads (thankfully) and the drivers side rear wheel compelely fell off while driving. I was doing about 30 MPH and felt like there was a flat tire so I was in the process of pulling over when the whole rear assembly snapped. This is very concerning since there was no way for me to know this was an issue. I could have been killed or killed someone else. Although this is a Massachusetts car I have owed it since 25k miles and have maintained it impeccably. I always have the undercarriage cleaned after driving on salty roads. Safety inspection was current- only done the month before. Had that wheel bearing replaced about 2 weeks before the incident and the reputable mechanic reported no issues. There was no warning except for maybe a minute before it happened- the car was vibrating like I had a flat tire. The damage repair estimate on this was $8500. Catastrophic fail Toyota. The ball joint bolts are installed backwards and make contact with the CV axle boot and boot clamp. The contact causes the clamp to break off and the boot to rupture thus leading to the axle grease to escape and breaking the axle. The grease can get into the brakes in the process and affect braking. I attached photos throwing the contact with the bolt heads installed upside down (bolt nuts on top)
... from Mevotech and the CV boot clamp. After the incident, I took one bolt out and reversed it to find out there was enough clearance to make this safe. Also note, Nissan installs the bolts with the head on top and nut on the bottom to avoid this issue. The OEM Nissan bolts are also 5mm smaller. This incident has caused over $150 in damages to my vehicle. I reached out to the manufacturer and they stated their technical team would review while completely ignoring my damages claim. ... t or nine times they finally ordered me a DCM. While waiting for that part, the auto start via key fog was not heating up the car. So with presetting the defrost to be on for auto start, the hazards came on when I auto started it. I happened to have had it at the service department when it happened and the mechanic said he didn’t know how to shut it off so he had to disconnect the battery. While I was speaking with Toyota about it on the phone, they asked me to try it out to see if the problem was gone and it wasn’t and I couldn’t shut the hazards off. So I drove with the hazards on and eventually the hazards turned off, but the CarPlay screen completely shut off when the hazards turned off. Also, when the hazards were on the car didn’t shut off when I opened the door. Also, another incident was that there was an acceleration issue when going to accelerate from a stopped position at a light. When I pressed on the gas the car started to move and then it went to a complete stop as if I was pushing on the break, but I wasn’t on the break. I was on the gas. I even looked down to see that my foot was on the gas. After pumping the gas pedal, it finally started to go. All of the above issues so far seem to be resolved after replacing the DCM. Like I said there’s too many incidences above for me to give a date to which all of this happened but it’s within the last few months I got this car in August.Read more
