The transmission needs to be replaced. My car has 75,146 miles and my check engine light came on while I was driving down the interstate. I took it to the Toyota dealership and they confirmed that the transmission needed to be replaced. I was told it would cost $8,600. I was looking for any recalls on my car and saw there were multiple lawsuits involving the transmission in my car and other Toyota

Sudden transmission failure. Seems to be a known issue with Toyota CHR 2018 onward. I own the 2018 model and there have been recalls in Canada regarding this issue.
Incident date: Jun 11, 2026
The vehicle experienced a sudden and catastrophic internal failure of its Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) at 139,000 miles. While driving, a heavy grinding noise began coming from the vehicle during acceleration. A certified technician at a Toyota dealership inspected the vehicle and officially diagnosed it with an internal center differential grind and noted that the transmission fluid w
... as burnt and filled with metal flakes. The dealership stated the entire transmission must be replaced at a cost of over $10,000. Toyota explicitly markets and describes this CVT transmission fluid as 'lifetime' fluid with no standard required maintenance, leading consumers to believe the unit is sealed and durable. However, this internal bearing/differential disintegration is a known material manufacturing defect affecting 2018-2022 Toyota C-HR models. This is a severe safety hazard as a sudden internal transmission failure can cause an immediate loss of vehicle propulsion while driving at high speeds in traffic, increasing the risk of a crash. This should not be happening at all at this mileageRead more

My vehicle has 67,100 miles. A whining/whistling noise recently started and the dealer has diagnosed that a new transmission is needed at a cost of $6,000-$8,000 and it is out of warranty. Researching this shows that this is a known manufacturing defect referred to under T-SB-0008-21. I am concerned that my transmission will fail while I am operating the vehicle.

My Toyota Highlander 2019 began to produce a whining noise that orginates in the transmission at about 89000 miles. An independent mechanic examined the vehicle and deteremined that the noise is well documented. After conducting research, I found that the issue is caused by improper assembly and the only repair is a complete replacement of the transmission. I also discovered that there is a reca
... ll on the 2017-2019 Toyota Highlander due to the 8 speed transmission which is also used in my vehicle. The idea that the 2019-2022 Toyota Highlanders are NOT included in this recall is completely unreasonable. These vehicles utilize the same 8-speed transmission and the whining noise tends to surface after 60, 000 miles - about four to five years based on useage. The whining noise began without warning or symptoms. The vehicle drove without issues and we intended on driving this vehicle into retirement considering the reputation Toyota had on building reliable vehicles. I will never purchase or recommend the purchase of a Toyota vehicle! The idea that repeated transmission failures, without an univeral recall for all years affected, shows that the comsumer is not respected. I would enjoy understanding the logic and data that enabled Toyota to limit the recall to just three production year when the 8-speed transmission spanned six years of production (2017-2022). I am now forced to look into replacing the transmission with potentionally another faulty, improperly assembled 8-speed transmission.Read more

The rear air conditioning refrigerant lines on a 2019 Toyota Highlander SE failed due to excessive rust/corrosion, causing the A/C system to leak refrigerant and stop holding a charge. The failure affected the rear A/C lines that run to the rear of the vehicle. The problem was first diagnosed by an independent repair shop and then confirmed by a Toyota dealer. The Toyota dealer documented that th
... e rear A/C lines were leaking due to excessive rust/corrosion. The dealer recommended replacing the rear A/C lines/cooling lines as a set, evacuating and recharging the A/C system, adding dye, and checking system operation. The repair was completed by the Toyota dealer but not covered or reimbursed. The vehicle/component was inspected by an independent service center and by a Toyota dealer. Toyota corporate customer support was also informed of the dealer diagnosis. The failed component may no longer be available for inspection because the repair has been completed, but repair records, dealer diagnosis, invoice, and related documentation are available. Safety concern: The A/C system failure can affect occupant safety and visibility because air conditioning is used for windshield defogging/defrosting and cabin humidity control. Loss of A/C can reduce the ability to clear the windshield in humid or rainy conditions. It can also create a risk to rear passengers, including children, during hot weather because the rear A/C system is no longer functioning as designed. The failure also involved leaking refrigerant from corroded lines. Toyota will not accept that this is a premature and dangerous parts failure. There were no warning lamps or dashboard messages before the failure. The symptom was that the A/C stopped cooling and would not hold refrigerant. The cause was later confirmed, by Toyota, as leaking rear A/C lines due to excessive rust/corrosion. Toyota has refused goodwill repair even after NUMEROUS persons have reported the same issue online.Read more

Four days after I took delivery of this used vehicle (April 25, 2026), multiple warning lights appeared at once: BRAKE, ABS, PARK, Check Engine, Blind Spot Monitor Unavailable, and RCTA OFF. An independent Toyota dealership diagnosed the vehicle April 27-28, 2026 (approx. 109,000 miles) and found (1) water leaking into the rear hybrid battery area through a sunroof drain "installed incorrectly," c

At a second visit on May 4, 2026, recalibration was unsuccessful; per Toyota procedure the only remaining option is replacing the right-rear blind spot sensor. The technician wrote the cause is a mystery, "whether it be body damage related or electrical short." Toyota service records show the same C1AC2 code was documented during the selling dealer's own pre-sale inspection, and that in December 2024 another Toyota dealership pulled the rear bumper and found the RR blind spot sensor bracket bent, causing incorrect readings - a recurring safety defect that prior calibrations and repairs have not resolved. Separately, federal safety recall 23V865 (occupant classification sensors; the passenger airbag may not deploy as designed) was open and incomplete when I purchased the vehicle and remains incomplete, and Toyota service campaign 25TD01 (rear traction motor cable corrosion) is also outstanding. The defect has been reproduced and confirmed by two Toyota dealerships, reported to the selling dealer in writing, and reported to Toyota's customer-care center. The vehicle's CVT transmission has failed, confirmed by Dublin Toyota (Dublin, CA) on June 9, 2026. The dealership has quoted $12,477 to replace the transmission, bringing the total repair estimate to over $15,000 — exceeding the vehicle's current market value. The dealership documented the following diagnostic trouble codes: P075B, P0741, and P2757. These codes are listed together in Toyota's o
... wn C-HR service manual as indicators of Torque Converter Clutch Circuit failure within the CVT system, confirming internal mechanical failure of the transmission. These are not minor or maintenance-related codes — they indicate a fundamental failure of the CVT's internal components. This is a known, widespread defect affecting 2018–2020 Toyota C-HR vehicles. Hundreds of owners have reported identical CVT bearing failures, often with no warning lights or prior symptoms, at mileages ranging from 38,000 to 140,000 miles. Toyota has acknowledged CVT issues on this model previously — issuing a software service campaign (Special Service Campaign J0D) for CVT programming defects — yet has refused to issue a recall or extended warranty for the underlying mechanical bearing failures now presenting across the fleet. Notably, Toyota Canada has extended warranty coverage for identical CVT failures on the same model years, while Toyota USA has declined to offer comparable relief to American owners facing the same defect. This defect represents a significant safety hazard, as CVT failure can result in sudden loss of propulsion while driving at highway speeds. Requested Action: Formal NHTSA investigation into CVT transmission bearing failures in 2018–2020 Toyota C-HR vehicles, and consideration of a recall or extended warranty campaign consistent with what Toyota Canada has already provided.Read more

I received a safety recall notice (21TA01) from Toyota for non-deployment of airbags. I scheduled an appointment with Kendall Toyota in Eugene, Oregon. They called me and told me they had to keep my car overnight because they had to special order the part (part # 04001-0590T). The next day I receive a text saying my car is ready for pick up. So I went and I picked up the car and the only thing the advisor said to me was the car was "all set". The next time I had a passenger the SRS Check Airbag systems warning light comes on again. So I went back and the service advisor said he had to go talk to his manager. He comes back to tell me that they never actually did the replacement on the vehicle and the warning message is a separate issue that I now have to schedule another appointment to diagnose. Yet the dealership reported to Toyota corporate, who has opened an audit into this incident, that the repair was COMPLETED. When typing my VIN number into this site it also said 0 recalls not completed which is false. The paperwork says no replacement yet says the part is on special order. I think this dealership is committing fraud and certainly were not forthcoming to me about the fact that no work was completed. It seems as though they were selectively speaking to pull one over on me.Read more

I am reporting a potential premature transmission failure in my 2019 Toyota Highlander AWD. At approximately 89,000 miles, the vehicle developed a noticeable and persistent whining noise coming from the transmission/drivetrain area. The noise continued despite transmission service and has progressed to the point where the vehicle requires a transmission replacement. I have had the vehicle evaluat
... ed by three separate repair facilities, including transmission specialists. All three independently determined that the transmission has failed and requires replacement. Repair estimates range from approximately $7,200 to $12,000. A complete transmission failure at approximately 89,000 miles is unexpected and raises concerns about a possible design or manufacturing defect. A transmission failure while driving could cause loss of power, inability to accelerate, reduced control of the vehicle, or create a dangerous situation while merging, entering traffic, or traveling at highway speeds. The vehicle has been maintained and used normally. I am submitting this complaint because I believe this issue may affect other Toyota Highlander owners and should be investigated for a potential safety-related defect.Read more

I then took it back to the dealer and had to pay to get an allignment, as I was concerned that is what was causing the tires to go bald so fast. That was less than 2 months ago and now I'm in getting the 20k service appointment and the rear allignment is now of

The center console between the front seats has a design defect. When small objects such as a credit card, key fob, or coin are left on the flat surface of the console, they can slip through a gap into the internal storage compartment. Once inside, the object becomes lodged and physically blocks the console lid from opening, locking the owner out of the storage compartment. The console must be part
... ially disassembled to retrieve the object. This is a design flaw, not operator misuse. The flat surface visually appears usable, and the owner's manual does not warn against placing objects there. This defect is widely reported in the "Toyota Sienna 2025+" Facebook group (the largest online community of current Sienna owners), where multiple owners report the same problem. The defect is therefore not isolated. The vehicle was purchased new on 01/22/2026 from Nourse Toyota. The dealer declined to repair and referred me to Toyota. Toyota Customer Experience (Case ID XXX, contact: [XXX], 06/04/2026) declined to offer a remedy. On 06/10/2026, the Toyota Brand Engagement Center (Case #XXX) confirmed in writing that no recall or Customer Support Program covers this issue, and that the diagnosis does not indicate a manufacturer defect. No warning lamps or messages appeared. The defect is mechanical. I request NHTSA review this defect for investigation and potential recall action. On 6/7 while driving 65 mph I hit a deer on the driver front. My car detected the crash and deployed every airbag inside the car. I received an injury to my legs from the driver's airbag under my steering wheel. If this airbag were not there, I would have had no injuries from this accident. I have missed work and was seen at the local ED for treatment.

I have experienced a severe hesitation or delay in acceleration when accelerating from a stop or near-stop condition. While the issue has only occurred a few times over the past several months, on multiple occasions it happened while merging into traffic and nearly resulted in an accident. Toyota has issued Technical Service Bulletin (TSB-0032-26) addressing this condition. However, when I brough
... t my vehicle to the dealership, Toyota documented that they were unable to reproduce or confirm the hesitation, and no repair was performed. This defect presents a significant safety risk. Unexpected loss of acceleration during traffic merges, intersections, or other situations requiring immediate power can place drivers and passengers in danger and could lead to serious injury or death. Given the safety implications and the fact that the remedy appears to be a software update requiring less than an hour to perform, I believe this issue warrants a formal safety recall rather than a voluntary Technical Service Bulletin. I urge NHTSA to investigate this matter and require Toyota to provide a recall remedy for all affected vehicles.Read more

Year: 2026 Make: Toyota Model: Camry LE Hybrid VIN: [XXX] Mileage at Time of Discovery: Approximately 750 miles Date Purchased: Approximately 20 days before discovery (22nd May 2026) Tire Brand/Model: Goodyear Assurance RangeMax Tire DOT Number: 1M63P LF1R 1626 I purchased this Toyota Camry new approximately 20 days ago. The vehicle currently has approximately 750 miles on it. During car washin
... g, I discovered visible bulges on all four tires. The tires are Goodyear Assurance RangeMax with DOT number 1M63P LF1R 1626. The bulges appear on each tire sidewall and raise concerns about a possible manufacturing defect or structural failure within the tires. The vehicle has not been involved in any accident, impact, pothole strike, or other event that would reasonably explain identical bulging on all four tires. I visited dealership and they confirmed it's manufacturing defects. Also, Goodyear service centre also confirmed it's manufacturing defects. Because tire sidewall bulges can indicate internal tire damage and increase the risk of tire failure, blowout, loss of vehicle control, crash, injury, or death, I believe this condition presents a significant safety concern. The fact that all four original-equipment tires exhibit similar bulging at very low mileage suggests the possibility of a defect affecting the tires or their manufacture. I am submitting this complaint so that NHTSA can investigate whether other consumers may be experiencing similar issues with Goodyear Assurance RangeMax tires installed on new Toyota Camry vehicles. Safety Concern: Potential tire sidewall defect resulting in bulging on all four tires at approximately 750 miles, creating a risk of tire failure, blowout, and loss of vehicle control. I noticed a whining sound coming from the vehicle. It would get louder as I accelerated. Took it into a mechanic he drove it, put it on the lift and said the noise was coming from the transmission. I took it to another shop and they quoted me $9,000. For a replacement. This is a problem that Toyota and other manufacturers know about. The CVT is unserviceable.
