It appears the battery cables were rubbing the transmission cooler lines and after an extended period caused a thermal event. it burned wiring harnesses, the DEF pump and lines and a good portion of battery cable. Had there been children on the bus at the time of the thermal event it could have been catastrophic. This vehicle has been inspected by the Manufacturer and they are covering repairs.

A TREE FELL AND STRUCK THE BUS NEAR, OR ON, THE RIGHT FRONT WINDSHIELD/ROOF AREA. THIS IMPACT CAUSED THE ENTIRE ROOF AREA TO COLLAPSE WITH SEVERE DAMAGE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE BUS.

THE FAILURE MODE OF CURRENT CONCERN IS WITH THE PARK BRAKE SWITCH IN THE AMU. THIS FAILURE MODE PREVENTS THE RELEASE OF THE PARK BRAKES. THE SCDE OPERATES 879 OF THESE UNITS. CONCERN:

WE ARE NOW EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS W/ FAILURES ON THE PARK BRAKE MODULE. WHEN THIS PROBLEM WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION, I HAD OUR STAFF PULL INSTALLATION INFORMATION FOR THE PART NUMBERS INVOLVED FROM ALL 45 MAINTENANCE FACILITIES. AS THE BUS DRIVER PULLED INTO THE BUS GARAGE, HE NOTICED HIS BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ON. I CHECKED THE BRAKE FLUID AND FOUND IT LOW. I APPLIED CONSTANT PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL THEN INSPECTED THE BRAKE SYSTEM. THE BRAKE LINE RUNNING DOWN FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER INSIDE THE FRAME RAIL WAS LEAKING. AFTER REPAIRING THIS BUS I INSPECTED OUR THREE OTHER C2'S WITH THE SAME CAT ENGINE COMBINATION AND FOUND THE FUEL LINE LAYING ON THE BRAKE LINE IN THE SAME LOCATION. NO CHAFING WAS FOUND ON THESE BUSES. I TIGHTENED THE FITTING ON THE WATER SEPARATOR TO RELOCATE THE FUEL LINE AND USED A WIRE TIE TO SUPPORT IT OFF THE BRAKE LINES. OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS EXPERIENCED A SIMILAR PROBLEM OF INTERMITTENT STOPLAMP OPERATION ON ONE OF OUR 2009 HDX THOMAS BUSES. AFTER DRIVING THE 2009 THOMAS HDX BUS FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS, DRIVER WAS BRINGING THE BUS TO A STOP, AND BEFORE HE ACTIVATED THE DOORS OR ANY OTHER ELECTRICAL ACCESSORIES, HE SAW SMOKE COMING UP FROM THE DASH IN FRONT OF THE STEERING WHEEL.
