This vehicle constantly displays and announces erroneous “Emergency Assist Is Currently Not Available” and “Travel Assist Is Currently Not Available” warnings. These warnings distract drivers and put the safety of the driver, passengers, and the public at risk because drivers have to take photographs of these erroneous warnings while they are occurring. Drivers have to document this defect
... through photographs because the dealerships deny the existence of the defect or request documentation when the defect does not appear as a fault in the vehicle's electronics modules . This is a widespread problem with this vehicle model and apparently is caused by a defective steering wheel. Dealerships are uncooperative in fixing this defect.Read more

Incident date: Aug 1, 2022
On the morning of 10/31/2023 I was on my way to work. I had the cruise set at 75 MPH, and I heard what sounded like an explosion/ loud bang. The truck immediately veered off to the left, hit a drainage culvert, and went airborne. With the front tire folded in, no steering was available to use. Upon inspection, while at the tow yard, the lower control arm snapped in half, as well as the CV join
... t (half shaft), so this was obviously the cause of the loud explosion/ bang sound that I heard. This lower control arm is made of aluminum, not steel. I could have been killed if I would have hit the culvert more square, as the truck missed the steel barrier cable posts by only a few feet, which was evident upon re-visiting the accident site two days later... the truck narrowly avoided being impaled by the barrier posts. It us unknown weather the police or insurance company inspected the vehicle when the body shop performed the repair assessment. There was no warning, just a catastrophic failure of the lower control arm.Read more

Per the technician: "the rear subframe is rusted out and the lateral strut arm is starting to break away". Because of this issue, the car unknowingly presented a safety risk to occupants and other drivers. A failure of the subframe or connected components could have resulted in a serious accident. Photos are attached. The vehicle is currently available for inspection upon request. There were
... no warning indicators to this issue. The issue was found only because the car was being serviced for brake pads. Mercedes Benz USA customer care said there was no recall or other warranty covering the issue and said the vehicle was outside their "good will assistance program". The vehicle is no longer able to be driven.Read more

There are two problems with this vehicle. 1) Power steering fails randomly. The failure is in the steering column. The failure can happen at any speed. When the failure occurs the vehicle will suddenly lose power steering causing the loss of full control of the steering. Unable to use the power steering in a GVW 64,000 pounds can make it difficult to control the vehicle. The only way to regain the
... power steering is to pull the vehicle into a safe place and restart the engine. There are no warning lights or audible indicators. This problem was replicated by a service center but no solutions were found. The problem has been reported to Spartan. The vehicle is available for inspection. 2) Unexpected curse control shutting off. This problem occurs without warning and for no apparent reason. The vehicle will suddenly slow down without notice. The potential for causing an accident is high when using cruise control. There are no warning lights or audible indicators. This problem has been reported to the service center for the dealership. They were unable to identify a solution. The vehicle is available for inspection. [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).Read more

Vehicle is a 2017 Spartan Custom Fire Engine. Since just after purchase of the vehicle it has had Supplemental Restraint Warning issues including an air bag light on startup. Dealership has worked on system multiple times and has attempted multiple "fixes" from Spartan including installing brackets to support the seat belt sensor wires to minimize what was believed to be intermittent disconnects.
... Further review with our dealership and an alternate dealership has identified this is an issue on multiple Spartan VIN's due to a wiring harness/connector issue. Spartan has told our service techs that there is a high resistance connection in the system and to change all connectors but that it will not be covered under warranty. As this is a life safety system with apparently known defects with a manufacturer that is hiding from a manufacturing defect we believe this should be subject to a recall.Read more

ENGINE FIRE WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY. WE RECENTLY HAD A DISASTER IN OUR MOTOR HOME. A FIRE BROKE OUT IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY (OCT 2015 NEAR ASHEVILLE NC). WHAT I DISCOVERED WAS A SEAL HAD FAILED ON THE HYDRAULIC MOTOR THAT DRIVES THE FAN. (THIS UNIT HAS A SIDE RADIATOR) WHEN THE SEAL FAILED IT SPRAYED OIL ON THE FAN BLADES THUS SPREADING OIL OVER THE TURBO AND EXHAUST MANIFOLD
... OF THE ENGINE. HAVE SEEN 3 OTHER COACHES IN FLAMES WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. LOOKED ON THE WEB AT MANY COACHES IN SALVAGE YARDS AND ALMOST ALWAYS THE FIRE STARTS IN THIS SAME LOCATION. THIS IS A POTENTIAL LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. BY THE TIME I HAD THE COACH STOPPED IT HAD COMPLETELY FILLED WITH THICK BLACK SMOKE AND I HAD PROBLEMS GETTING MY WIFE OUT THE DOOR, ALSO A VERY EXPENSIVE PROBLEM. I THINK A SHIELD AROUND THE MOTOR TO KEEP OIL FROM GETTING ON THE FAN BLADES OR A DOUBLE SEAL ON THE MOTOR SHAFT WITH A DRAIN TUBE BETWEEN SEALS WOULD BE AN EASY FIX AND NOT TOO EXPENSIVE. THE COACH WE LOST WAS ON A SPARTAN CHASSIS THE LAST ONE I SAW BURN WAS ON A FREIGHT LINER CHASSIS. I THINK ALL THE COACHES WITH SIDE RADIATOR HAVE THIS SAME ISSUE. JULY 2007 WE PURCHASED A NEW REXHALL ROSEAIR RV FROM THEIR DEALER. THIS RV WAS COMING OFF THE MANUFACTURE LINE. WE WERE NOT ADVISED THAT REXHALL WAS USING SEVEN YEAR CHASSIS THAT HAD BEEN OUT IN THE CALIF. DESERT UNPROTECTED. AFTER RECEIPT OF THE RV WE FOUND OUT THAT THE ENTIRE WIRING HARNESS WAS CRACKED, BRITTLE AND COPPER ON COPPER. WE CAME VERY CLOSE TO HAVING A FIRE IN THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE
... SINCE LEARNED THAT BILL REX, CEO OF REXHALL PUT APPROXIMATELY 5-10 RV'S SIMILAR TO THIS OUT ON THE ROAD AS NEW. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE STARTER, ALTERNATOR, THE CHASSIS A/C, THE AIR BAG SENSOR, TIRES, AND THE POWER STEERING HOSE. WHEN THE AIR BAG SENSOR BLEW I BEGAN HAVING STEERING PROBLEMS ON HWY 101, IN WHICH CAME CLOSE TO LOSING TOTAL CONTROL. THIS RV IS AND WAS A MAJOR HIGHWAY SAFETY PROBLEM. I SPENT $178,000 FOR THIS RV AND WHEN I FILED A CALIF. LEMON LAWSUIT AGAINST REXHALL THEY CONVENIENTLY FILED A CHAPTER 11 BK. BILL REX WILL NOT TAKE THIS RV BACK AND RETURN MY MONEY, THE ONLY THING HE DID WAS REPLACE THE WIRING HARNESS. THE TIRES WERE CRACKED FROM THE YEARS IN THE DESERT AND OVER ALL I HAVE SPENT $1200 FOR TWO NEW TIRES AND MY EXTENDED WARRANTY AND VEHICLE INSURANCE HAS COVERED MORE THAN $45,000. REXHALL RV MANUFACTURING NEEDS TO BE SHUTDOWN AND SEVERELY FINED FOR PLACING THE WELFARE OF THE US PUBLIC AT RISK. UPDATED 08/15/11 *BF UPDATED 09/27/11 *BF *TR UPDATED 2/21/12 *CNRead more
