ON 02/18/2019 I TOOK MY SAFE, ENGINE ADEQUATLEY FUNCTIONING 2013 SCION FRS INTO JOHN ELWAY'S TOYOTA FOR A RECALL. IT WAS FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF VALVE SPRINGS. DURING THE FEW TIMES I DID DRIVE MY VEHICLE I HEARD THE SAME TAPPING/KNOCKING NOISE SO APPROXIMATELY ON 03/14/2019 I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO JOHN ELWAY TOYOTA FOR FURTHER EVALUATION OF MY CAR. THEY ASK TO KEEP MY CAR OVERNIGHT SINCE I COULD NOT POINT OUT THE NOISE WHEN I DROVE THE MECHANIC AROUND THE BLOCK.. FINALLY ON 04/10/2019 I TOOK MY CAR BACK TO JOHN ELWAY;S TOYOTA BECAUSE THE TAPPING/KNOCKING NOISE HAD BECOME A CONSTANT, CONSISTENT NOISE, VERY SIMILAR TO THE KNOCKING NOISE THAT BECAME LOUDER WHEN MY VEHICLE WAS TOWED, ALSO, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAD COME ON. IT WAS ABOUT TWO WEEKS BEFORE THEY TOLD ME THEY HAD COULD NOT FIND "ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE VECHILE BUT THE TAPPING CONTINUES, SO WE CALLED A GUY FROM OUR TORRANCE TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS TO COME TAKE A LOOK". I WOULD LIKE TO INFORM YOU THAT THIS TOYOTA SPECIALISTS REMOVED THE ENGINE FOR THE THIRD TIME TO DETERMINE WHAT WAS OCCURRING WITH MY VEHICLE. I CALLED MY TOYOTA ADVISER FOR UPDATES AND HE BASICALLY TOLD ME TO START LOOKING FOR A NEW CAR UNLESS I "ABSOLUTELY LOVED" MY CAR BECAUSE IT LOOKS LIKE I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. FOR TWO WEEKS I COULD NOT GET AN ANSWER TO WHAT HAD ACTUALLY OCCURRED WITH MY VEHICLE AND MY CALLS WERE NO LONGER BEING TAKEN BY MY TOYOTA ADVISOR JEFF WADE. ON FEBRUARY13, 2019, I TOOK MY CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO ADDRESS A RECENT RECALL TO FIX A VALVE SPRING. MARCH 5, MY CAR LOST POWER AND MADE A KNOCKING NOISE. MY CHECK ENGINE AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT WENT ON. I TOOK MY CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP ON MARCH 5, THEY RESET THE CODE AND TOLD ME NOTHING WAS WRONG. ON THE WAY HOME, IT BROKE AGAIN. A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP PERFORMED THE VALVE SPRING RECALL ON MY 2013 FR-S. THEY DID NOT DO THE WORK PROPERLY AND NOW THE ENGINE IS KNOCKING LOUD ENOUGH TO BE HEARD INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE CAR. AS OF THE DATE I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT, THE DEALER HAS HAD MY CAR FOR A TOTAL OF 100 DAYS FOR THIS ISSUE. I HAVE NOT BEEN PROVIDED AN ESTIMATED RETURN DATE BY THE DEALER. SO FAR, THE DEALER CLAIMS THAT THE MECHANIC HAS REPLACED ALL THE VALVE SPRINGS, INSTALLED MANY VALVE SHIMS, REPLACED ONE EXHAUST VALVE, AND REPLACED THE SHORT BLOCK, ALONG WITH OTHER COMPONENTS. EACH TIME THEY HAVE DONE EACH OF THESE OPERATIONS, THEY HAVE REMOVED AND REINSTALLED THE ENGINE. EACH TIME THE ENGINE IS REMOVED AND REINSTALLED, IS ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY FOR THE MECHANIC TO MAKE A MISTAKE AND DAMAGE SOMETHING ELSE. ON ALL 4 RETURN ATTEMPTS, THEY TRIED TO CONVINCE ME THE KNOCKING SOUNDS WERE NORMAL. I KNOW THIS IS NOT TRUE, AS I AM AN ENGINEER, A MECHANIC, AND I HAVE BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE SOUNDS THE CAR MAKES DURING THE 75,000 MILES I HAD DRIVEN THE CAR. THEY ALSO REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE THAT MANY OTHER DEALERSHIPS ARE CAUSING. I FEEL I HAVE BEEN VERY PATIENT WITH THE DEALER, WHO HAS PROVEN TO BE DISHONEST AND INCOMPETENT, WHEN IT COMES TO THIS TYPE OF WORK. I HAVE TRIED TO GET SUPPORT FROM TOYOTA CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE, WHO TELLS ME THIS IS AN ISSUE BETWEEN THE DEALER AND ME, NOT TOYOTA CORPORATE. WAS PICKED UP ON A FLATBED AND DELIVERED TO TOYOTA OF NAPERVILLE WHERE THE RECALL WORK HAD BEEN PERFORMED MONTHS EARLIER. I WAS INFORMED THAT THERE IS METAL IN THE OIL/OIL-PAN, EXTREMELY MUDDY OIL AND THAT A SENIOR TECH WILL BE VISITING TO FURTHER ASSESS. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF ENGINE-REPLACEMENT. SO I LIMPED IT HOME AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY ON MY DIME TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED. THIS ALL HAPPENED OVER THE COURSE OF 7-9 DAYS AFTER DRIVING HOME FROM THE RECALL WORK. THAT WAS OVER 5 WEEKS AGO AND I STILL HAVEN'T GOTTEN A DECISIVE ANSWER AS TO WHAT HAPPENED TO MY CAR AND WHAT MIGHT BE THE SOLUTION TO SAID PROBLEM. THE WARRANTY COMPANY I USED WHEN I BOUGHT MY CAR BACK IN FEBRUARY ( VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER THE 3000 MI, 3 MONTH WARRANTY MIND YOU ) HAS BEEN JERKING BOTH ME AND THE DEALER BACK AND FORTH, AND HAS STATED THEY WILL ONLY PAY 2K FOR A NEW MOTOR, WHICH WILL SURELY BE MORE THAN THAT, WHICH MAKES ME STUCK WITH THE REST OF HOWEVER MUCH THAT REPAIR MAY COST. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHICH WAS 2 MILES AWAY AND FROM THAT SHORT DRIVE THE CENTER OF THE GLASS BEGAN TO CAVE IN AND ALLOW GLASS TO ENTER INTO THE VEHICLE DIRECTLY ABOVE WHERE PASSAGES SIT IN THE BACK SEAT. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS IN THE BACKSEAT WHEN THIS HAPPENED OUR DIRECTLY OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE AND WAS INJURED BY THIS. THROUGH FURTHER RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT TEMPERED GLASS CAN SPONTANEOUSLY BREAK. SOME OF THE CAUSES OF THIS TO HAPPEN INCLUDE BINDING OF THE GLASS IN THE FRAME, CAUSING STRESSES TO DEVELOP AS THE GLASS EXPANDS AND CONTRACTS DUE TO THERMAL CHANGES OR DEFLECTS DUE TO WIND. INTERNAL DEFECTS WITHIN THE GLASS SUCH AS NICKEL SULFIDE INCLUSIONS. DAMAGES ACCRUED DURING INSTALLATION. THERMAL STRESSES IN THE GLASS AND INADEQUATE GLASS THICKNESS TO RESIST WIND LOAD. I ALSO DISCOVERED THAT THERE HAVE BEEN MANY OTHER CLAIMS INCLUDING SCION TC'S AND THE MOONROOF BREAKING AND RISK OF SHOWERING GLASS ON TOP OF DRIVERS AND PASSENGERS. I WENT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY WANT TO TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT AND HAVE PUSHED IT OFF TO MY INSURANCE COMPANY. UPON TOWING IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND HAVING IT INVESTIGATED FOR THE ROOT CAUSE, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE VALVE SPRINGS ON A CYLINDER ARE FAILING. SEVERAL WEEKS LATER, ON MY WAY TO MY REGULAR MECHANIC TO HAVE THE REPAIR INSPECTED (DRIVING ON A PAVED ROAD ON PRIVATE PROPERTY AT SONOMA RACEWAY IN SONOMA, CA), I EXPERIENCED A BANG AND KNOCK IN THE ENGINE. IT WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WE WERE TOLD THAT THE CLICKING SOUND WAS NOT RELATED TO THEIR REPAIRS MADE UNDER THE RECALL, RATHER IT WAS BECAUSE THE FUEL SYSTEM WAS DEFECTIVE AND IT WOULD COST US $1940+ FOR IT TO BE REPAIRED. 5 DAYS AFTER PICKING THE VEHICLE UP FROM THE DEALER THE ENGINE CONPLETELY QUIT AS THE VEHICLE WAS ABOUT TO TURN ONTO ANOTHER ROAD AFTER STOPPING AT A STOP SIGN.. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER. WE WERE TOLD THAT IT APPEARED THE PROBLEM WAS THE FLY WHEEL, NOT RELATED TO THEIR REPAIR. EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION BETWEEN OIL CHANGES, I NEED TO CHECK THE LEVEL EVERY MONTH AND ADD OIL IF NEEDED. WHEN I TURN ON THE VEHICLE, THE RADIO TURNS ON ALONE OR TURNS ITSELF OFF, WITHOUT PRESSING THE BUTTON. THESE 2 COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN GOING ON FOR MORE THAN TWO YEARS.
