Electrical power steering goes in and out and the dash displays “steering assist fault” warning, and the power steering goes out entirely. You can still turn, but it takes a lot more physical effort to do so. Since it goes in and out, it can happen at any time and is very hard to get diagnosed through a diagnostic if the mechanic or dealer cannot replicate the issue.

I have been reporting an issue for over two years with multiple dealerships regarding a sulphur and other strong exhaust smell. In beginning they would not even log my concern, but this past year I have been submitting online. Always no code so no issue. No other troubleshooting is done. I have even requested additional basic troubleshooting data and not received. This is not a normal smell, as the Lincoln dealership(s) suggest. This smell makes us feel unpleasant. They said that this could happen again while I was driving and at any time but BMW did not want to figure out what was wrong until the next catastrophic failure occurred. There are numerous stories of drivetrain malfunctions on reddit. This is an electric car, it is terrifying that the whole thing could turn off at any time. In addition, the dealer says that they don't even know what the codes mean and that they have to ask BMW north America to tell them what to do once they send in the codes! Shouldn't a dealer be able to see what the failures are and have some authority to troubleshoot? It seems like BMW is withholding information from the public and the dealer by working in this manner with electric cars. These seat are suppose meet certain standards. I responded to The dealer today and spoke to a service representative who did agree it was probably a defect because he never heard of that happening but also said unfortunately you are just over warranty by three thousand miles. Stated you can leave car but it will involve full days labor taking seat apart. Doesn't say much for dealer mechanics. Also said there was no recall on it but admitted when it happened could have been serious accident. He also made no attempt to even go out and look at it. If in fact this is a defect people's lives could be in danger. If I wasn't able to pull myself up immediately to a sitting position we probably would have had an accident.
