... ve been a full electrical fire within the car, putting us in further mortal danger had we not shut the car off immediately. We also were in a highly congested area, and could have been hit while jumping out of the car for fear of smoke/fire. We could have been rear ended by traffic behind us as well. The dealership said that this is a common problem that I did not cause nor could have anticipated or prevented. I did my own research and have found many accounts of this exact same issue happening with this make and model of the car (2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio). There are accounts online that Alfa Romeo has since switched out the part in later makes of the car for one that is more protected and not prone to corrosion - it is clear that they know and have quietly acknowledged the issue. This is a common and reproducible problem. The car has only been inspected by the mechanics at a local repair shop and then at an Alfa Romeo dealership. The insurance representatives said that because this is a mechanical failure, it is not covered by insurance and therefore they have no need to inspect it. There were no symptoms prior to the failure of the ground strap and melting of the wires within the wiring harness. The car was functioning as normal up until this incident. It was well taken care of with regular maintenance and only had 48,000 miles on the odometer. It had never had any prior issues, mechanical or otherwise.Read more

I was driving and I began slowing down as I approached a red light. My vehicle suddenly stopped. I was unable to turn the vehicle back on nor change the gear. When I would press the start button while pressing the brakes, some dash lights would turn on but again I was not able to change the gear. After several attempts of turning the car on, the car started and I was able to change gears to Drive.

The car was subsequently towed to a nearby Honda Dealership where an inspection was allegedly done and the issue was supposedly fixed. The service notes stated the vehicle was found with low oil levels and that no leak was found. They released the car back to me. Now, one week after I picked the car up from the Honda Service Department, I encountered the same issue again. While stopped in traffic, my vehicle shut down. I was unable to turn it back on nor change the gears. An orange steering wheel with an orange exclamation mark next to it popped up on the upper right hand corner of my dashboard along with a red battery logo below it. I was on the roadway unable to turn the car back on for approximately one hour. While checking the harness/tightening I pulled to check for any slack and I was able to pull the loose without using the harness release lever. I had my child get out of the seat to check. I’ve cleaned out around the lever and still have the same issue. Nothing has been taken apart or altered since this issue. Harness straps are in good condition and everything is connected as it should be.

I am highly concerned that the car does not truly know which gear it is in and it compromises not only my safety, but the safety of my family/other passengers, and other drivers on the road. The problem is a known problem and there is an active fix bulletin for the problem. GM cannot get the part in stock - it has been 5 weeks. It affects not only my year, make, and model, but many others too. GM continues to sell the cars with this known safety defect. This defect has been confirmed by the dealership, and GM has sent out a known fix for the issue (TSB PIT5616A). There is also a class action lawsuit for this specific issue with GM. GM's solution to me is to trade in my car for a newer model rather than waiting for the part. In addition, many cars of my year, make, and model require a whole new transmission, but GM will only replace the shifter harness to start with, if and when they receive the part. I was told that the part could take up to six months to receive. For an issue that has been happening since at least 2019, this is unacceptable. The only warning that I receive is when I am trying to shut off my car and it will not shut off due to this error. This has been happening to my car for 2 months, but there seems to be a history of this defect since at least 2019.Read more

We were driving on [XXX] near Norcross, GA about 200 ft from exit [XXX] at a constant speed of around 70 mph, when suddenly the vehicle displayed 'system malfunction' and started veering on its own and the brakes wouldn't work. Toyota sent a third-party inspector to gather data from the vehicle but that turned out to be merely the crash data up to 5 seconds prior by which time the malfunction had already occurred and the vehicle speed was down from 70mph to 31mph.
