I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE DOWN THE HIGHWAY WHILE ACCELERATING WHEN I FELT THE CAR SQUIRM AND NOTICED A LARGE CLOUD OF SMOKE BILLOWING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. I PULLED OVER AND IDENTIFIED THE ISSUE AS A CATASTROPHIC COOLANT LEAK FROM THE ENGINE AREA (REAR) OF THE VEHICLE. IT WAS EXPLAINED TO ME THAT PORSCHE, FROM THE FACTORY, USED AN ADHESIVE LIKE MATERIAL TO MATE THE CONNECTORS OF THE COOLANT LINES AND ENGINE AND AFTER USAGE THEY WILL COME APART CAUSING COOLANT TO BE HEMORRHAGED ONTO THE ENGINE AND POTENTIALLY WHEELS/TIRES CAUSING FOR VERY DANGEROUS ROAD CONDITIONS. DURING THE INCIDENT I ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE DUE TO THE COOLANT CONTACTING THE TIRES WHICH WOULD NOT HAVE OTHERWISE HAPPENED HAD PORSCHE NOT MANUFACTURED THEIR VEHICLES IN THE AFOREMENTIONED WAY. RECENTLY, I PURCHASED TIE RODS FOR MY 1995 PORSCHE 911. I ORDERED THROUGH ECS TUNING (ORDER #: [XXX]), SHIPPED TO MY HOME. I INSPECTED THE TIE RODS, AND WHILE NOT IDENTICAL TO THE ORIGINAL MANUFACTURERS PARTS, THEY LOOKED SUBSTANTIALLY THE SAME. I INSTALLED THE TIE RODS (MADE BY HAMBURG TECHNIC) WITHOUT INSTALLATION DIFFICULTY. AS YOU ARE AWARE, TIE RODS ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE STEERING
... SYSTEM AND ARE DESIGNED TO BE ADJUSTED FOR WHEEL ALIGNMENT. I EYEBALLED THE ALIGNMENT AND PROMPTLY TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MERCHANTS TIRE AND AUTO (3419 HWY 17 S, MURRELLS INLET, SC 29576, 843-651-4816) FOR A PROFESSIONAL ALIGNMENT ON A HUNTER LASER RACK. AS THE VEHICLE WAS BEING BACKED UP AT THEIR FACILITY, THE LEFT INNER TIE ROD SEGMENT SEPARATED. THE INNER SLEEVE BECAME COMPLETELY DISCONNECTED FROM THE OUTER SLEEVE, RENDERING THE CAR INCAPACITATED. I DON'T KNOW HOW I MANAGED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITHOUT THEM SEPARATING ON THE ROAD, LEADING TO AN ACCIDENT. AS I HAD ORDERED 2 SETS OF TIE RODS, I RETURNED HOME AND GOT THE SECOND SET, AND THEY PUSHED THE CAR INTO A SERVICE BAY. THEY REPLACED THE TIE RODS WITH THE SECOND SET. WHILE BACKING THE CAR OUT OF THE SERVICE BAY, TO MOVE IT TO THE ALIGNMENT RACK, THE LEFT TIE ROD SEPARATED AGAIN, RENDERING THE CAR INCAPACITATED FOR THE SECOND TIME. AS THERE IS CLEARLY A DESIGN OR MANUFACTURING PROBLEM WITH THESE PARTS, I OBTAINED TIE RODS FROM ANOTHER VENDOR. THOSE TIE RODS WERE PLACED ON THE VEHICLE WITHOUT ISSUE, AND AN ALIGNMENT WAS SUCCESSFULLY PERFORMED. DEPENDING ON THE GEOMETRY OF THE SUN AND THE CAR THE BLIND SPOT IN THE WINDOW FROM THE REFLECTION CAN BE ALMOST OPAQUE. I DROVE ON FOR A SHORT TIME (A FEW MINUTES) AND THEN PARKED BRIEFLY, SHUTTING OFF THE ENGINE (AGAIN FOR A FEW MINUTES) TO CONSIDER THE SITUATION AND TO CALL THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF MY DEALERSHIP (WHICH WAS CLOSED SINCE IT WAS LATE IN THE DAY). THERE THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS A FAILURE OF A COOLANT PIPE THAT LED TO COOLANT LOSS, WHICH REQUIRES AN ESTIMATED $7,500 IN REPAIR WORK. I HAVE SINCE LEARNED THAT THIS IS A RECOGNIZED PROBLEM WITH THE MODEL, MAKE, AND YEAR OF MY CAR. AN NHTSA REPORT HAS BEEN FILED ABOUT THIS, WITH AN ACTION NUMBER OF PE13009 (OPENED ON APRIL 26, 2013). WHILE I WAS NOT DRIVING AT HIGH SPEED AND THERE WAS NO CRASH, FIRE, INJURY, OR FATALITY ASSOCIATED WITH THIS EVENT, THIS ISSUE POSES SIGNIFICANT SAFETY RISKS GIVEN HOW QUICKLY THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE TEMPERATURE EXCEEDED SAFE OPERATING LIMITS. I RECEIVED ANOTHER CALL A FEW DAYS LATER INFORMING ME THAT MY CAYENNE NOW HAD A SECOND COOLANT LEAK AT THE CROSSOVER PIPE TOWARD THE BACK OF THE ENGINE NEAR FIREWALL (REQUIRED REMOVAL OF THE ENGINE IN ORDER TO REPAIR). THE SERVICE GUY & PORSCHE TECH TOLD ME THE SECOND LEAK OCCURRED BECAUSE THE "FIRST" REPAIR (ACTUALLY THE SECOND, IF YOU CONSIDER IT WAS ALREADY REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY AT 40K MILES) THEN PROPERLY PRESSURIZED MY COOLANT SYSTEM, CAUSING THE NEXT LEAK, REQUIRING THE "NEXT" REPAIR. APPARENTLY THE INITIAL REPAIR DONE AT 40K MILES WAS ONLY ENOUGH TO HOLD OUT UNTIL THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. PORSCHE MADE THE REPAIRS & REPLACED PLASTIC PIPES WITH ALUMINUM ONES THIS TIME, ON MY DOLLAR. I HAD TO PAY FOR TWO COOLANT REPAIRS, + A NEW STARTER, SOLENOID, & BATTERY, ALL COLLATERAL DAMAGE DUE TO THE PIPE LEAKS. THE PORSCHE PANAMERA, ON THE OTHER HAND, TAKES THE CAR OUT OF DRIVE AND PUTS IT INTO NEUTRAL SO THAT IT CAN ROLL FORWARD OR BACKWARD WHICH I BELIEVE IS A VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION. IN MY CASE, IT TOOK THE CAR OUT OF DRIVE AND MOVED TO NEUTRAL TO ALLOW IT TO ROLL BACKWARDS. IF THERE WAS A CHILD BEHIND MY CAR THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN INJURED OR KILLED. I WAS DRIVING ON A MAJOR 8-LANE HIGHWAY. I SHIFTED UNEVENTFULLY THROUGH THE GEARS, UNTIL I ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT FROM 5TH TO 6TH.
