Dear NHTSA Investigations Team, We are the owners of a 2015 Hyundai Sonata, purchased in 2016 and still in use today. This vehicle is suffering from severe engine issues linked to the Theta II engine defect, which has been the subject of recalls and class action lawsuits. For nearly a year, we have been forced to add approximately 2 quarts of oil every week due to extreme oil consumption. This is
... unsustainable, unsafe, and clearly linked to the known recall defect. The most serious incident occurred when my wife was driving on [XXX] in North Carolina, and the vehicle suddenly lost power. It could not maintain safe highway speed and had to be pulled off the interstate, requiring a tow more than an hour back to our home. This was a frightening event that could easily have caused a crash. We later discovered that our vehicle was included in the Theta II engine recall, but we never received notice due to a change of address. Despite this, Hyundai Motor America has refused to help, citing that the recall was “closed.” Shockingly, one representative even told us to “keep putting oil in it until the engine blows,” at which point they might reconsider. This is an unsafe and negligent response to a well-documented safety defect. To make matters worse, when reviewing our VIN for other recalls, we found that the panoramic roof air dam recall was falsely listed as “repaired.” We never received notification of that recall, and the repair was never performed. The air dam detached years ago, and we have avoided using the sunroof since then due to noise and safety concerns. We have contacted Hyundai corporate multiple times, and we also filed a formal complaint with the North Carolina Attorney General’s office. I had some work done on the drive train of my car by a local mechanic. When I picked up the car, the Brake light and the Low Tire light were on. I asked the mechanic to see about getting them turned off. He came to me a bit later, said they tried to replace a fuse connected to these sensors, and the fuse blew out a small flame when they tried to start the car. He looked it up and discovered there

They are refusing to correct the issue because they said he messed it up, and therefore they are not liable. They are wanting to charge me several thousand dollars to fix the problem. This seems completely insane because were it not for their faulty equipment, none of this would have happened. They are also refusing to perform a recall on the ABS system, claiming that someone has previously worked on it. My 2019 jeep Cherokee latitude only had 25000 miles on it when i bought it. Within a month the emergence break would come on by itself randomly while driving or beginning to accelerate from a parked or stopped state. It also will not start randomly, you will go out get in and for no reason it won’t turn over, yet the electrical systems will turn in fine, it’s getting power. In order for this to stop, you have to keep turning it on and off and apply the parking brake and the brake and than release them…. Over and over with intermittent breaks in between until it finally turns over. If you manage to get it started than it won’t shift properly. It stays in an extremely low gear unless you accelerate rapidly. And it won’t accelerate rapidly, your foot can be to the floor and it’s barely going until it gets into third and than just keeps rising never down shifting again until you coast to a stop and have to turn it off again and start the process over. On hills when this happens you will get hit and killed bc it won’t go in time for you to get out of oncoming traffic’s way. It has shut off while driving on the highway. Left me stranded blocking people in in parking lots. And almost gotten me and my family killed in several occasions. There are no similar circumstances in which it does this. It is comletely random and that makes it terrifying. I have 2 children that I am afraid to take anywhere now, and the jeep was bought to keep them safe and able to get anywhere in case of inclement weather etc. as if that’s not enough, the passenger seat floor is always wet. My truck is currently experiencing shuddering when driving. This happens at random times but is becoming more frequent. Now it shudders, shifts very harshly, rpms fluctuate continuously, knocking noise when driving, and in the mornings when I first leave for work, my truck will not shift out of first without revving high in rpms. I took it to a mechanic and was told that it was my torque converter, which has now damaged my transmission. All of which I have to pay for out of pocket. These symptoms started when my vehicle was still under warranty (around 30,000 miles). I even flushed the transmission, and it did not help. This is my daily driving truck, and I use it to go to work and transport my 3 young children around. Most of our driving is done on the highway at high speeds (70 mph). When my truck shudders or shifts harshly, I feel that it is going to cause me to lose control or wreck, putting not only my life but my children's lives in danger. I have not consulted a lawyer, as I do not have enough money to do so. I have not had the manufacturer look at it, because when I called about it, they told me I would have to pay for all service fees since it is out of warranty. The only warning lamps I get is when it goes into limp mode (which is at least once or twice a month) and by the time I used to get it to a mechanic, the light was off and they said there is nothing they could do about it. All of this has been happening to some degree since it was around 30,000 miles and only getting worse. At the beginning, the car was inside the dealership ever so often to try to fix that problem. That recall was presented in other VIN numbers but not mine, but the dealer decided to "so call" fix it. The problem stopped happening for a while, then started again. It went back to the dealership in Schaumburg Mitsubishi. They told me without a receipt or notice, they fix it, again. When the dealership closed, I didnt know where to go or what to do. The case number left in Mitsubishi motors was only available for a year, so when I called again, I had to make a new case but there was no dealer no more. When I went to Gregory Mitsubishi, I explained the problem but they couldnt find anything and they couldnt get any information about my history because Schaumburg Mitsubishi was gone. I know how to manage the problem, I just have to move back to a safe spot quickly, sometimes doing unsafe maneuvers, so I wont cause an accident. Car started and burning oil at 61,000 despite regular oil changes at 3500. Mostly done by the dealership. Car has been burning oil uses 1 quart every 500 miles. All four window regulators have stopped working. I replaced one.

I am submitting this complaint regarding the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) failure in our Jeep vehicle. We have experienced intermittent transmission issues throughout our entire period of ownership. The CVT has now completely failed—the vehicle will not shift out of low gear. ... , it will not reach normal driving speeds, making it unsafe and unusable for daily travel. The check engine light is on, and diagnostic codes confirm a CVT-related issue. The vehicle originally came with a lifetime powertrain warranty. We complied with the required inspection and maintenance schedule, except for the most recent inspection, which we missed due to a personal hardship. Jeep initially sent reminders for these inspections but eventually stopped, and we received no notice of the upcoming deadline. The vehicle has been regularly maintained by a trusted local repair shop. Despite this, it is now undriveable. From both our personal experience and broader consumer reports, it’s clear that these types of CVT failures are common among Jeep vehicles. Jeep has refused to honor the warranty, stating it could only be reinstated if we paid for the repairs ourselves within a specific timeframe—which has now passed. This policy places an unreasonable burden on the consumer, especially for a known and recurring mechanical issue. We believe Jeep is failing to take responsibility for a serious safety and performance defect. I respectfully ask the NHTSA to investigate this matter further and evaluate whether broader action—such as a recall—is warranted.Read more

Hands-free tailgate feature initiated unintended closure and disregarded obstruction, striking my wife's head to the point of pain as she was holding our toddler. Had my wife not resisted the hatch with her head further or was holding our toddler differently, this would have caused severe injury or death.

While accelerating the gas gage goes up but there is resistance when pressing on gas. The vehicle does not accelerate right away and there is a drag before the vehicle gets up to speed. It takes off really slow.

I was in complete shock and end up scraping my front left rim on the curb I was next to, damaging the vehicle as a result. I am just recently out of my warranty and I do not have the funds to have it looked at just yet. I did inform the dealership that I purchased the vehicle from. I originally thought it was something maybe I had done to cause it. I also was completely unaware of any recalls on several of the year and model of my vehicle. When I looked up recalls on them, my vehicle has very similar issues to a lot of other cars like It that have already been recalled. I am upset because if I had known there were potential safety issues with these particular make and model car I would have not wanted to finance it, especially at the price point I have. It seems that several thousand were recalled a few months before I financed mine. One of the daytime running lights has gone out with only 45,000 miles on my vehicle. Dealership says they need to replace the entire headlight assembly, instead of the bulb, at a cost of $1,500.
