1994 MISTUBISHI 3000GT VR-4 SEAT BELTS RETRACT VERY SLOWLY, SOMETIMES HAVE TO ASSIST THE RETRACTION. THIS AFFECTS BOTH FRONT SEAT BELT ALL THE TIME AND THE REAR BELTS OCCASIONALLY. I OWN A 2002 MITSUBISHI LANCER. I PURCHASED FROM CARMAX IN 2005 AND WAS ASSURED THAT IT WAS FREE OF PROBLEMS. ADDITIONAL RESEARCH SHOWED THAT THE CAR HAD BEEN WELL CARED FOR AND HAD NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. WHILE SITTING IN TRAFFIC ON THE INTERSTATE IN LATE FEBRUARY 2006 THE STEERING COLUMN INEXPLICABLY COLLAPSED INTO MY LAP. THE CAR WAS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTROL, AND I WAS FORTUNATE THAT I W
... AS IN GRIDLOCK, OTHERWISE I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. SO, SINCE MY WARRANTY WITH CARMAX HAD LAPSED, I TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC (WHO IS EXTREMELY COMPETENT AND REPUTABLE). HE LOOKED AT THE IT AND HAD NO EXPLANATION FOR WHAT CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE STEEL BRACKETS HOLDING THE COLUMN IN PLACE HAD BEEN RIPPED THROUGH, AND THE ONLY THING CAPABLE OF DOING THIS WAS A HEAD ON COLLISION. I HAD HIM REPAIR THE COLUMN, AS I NEEDED MY CAR. HE FIXED ALL THE NECESSARY PROBLEMS AND DID NOT FIND ANYTHING ELSE THAT NEEDED REPAIRING. THEN IN APRIL 2006, I WAS SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT AND AGAIN THE COLUMN COLLAPSED. IT WAS IN A WORSE STATE THAN DURING THE PREVIOUS FAILURE. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC TO BE RE-EXAMINED. HE WAS ABLE TO FIND NOTHING RELATED TO HIS PREVIOUS REPAIR THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THIS SECOND FAILURE. THE STEEL RIVETS AND BOLTS SUPPORTING THE COLUMN (WHICH HAD NOT BEEN TOUCHED DURING THE PREVIOUS REPAIR AND WERE THEREFORE UNDISTURBED), HAD COMPLETELY RIPPED AWAY. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A MITSUBISHI DEALER AND THEIR SERVICE TEAM COULD COME UP WITH NO EXPLANATION FOR WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THIS FAILURE OTHER THAN A POTENTIALLY DEFECTIVE COLUMN. I WAS ASSURED THAT THIS WAS NOT DUE TO NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. I CONTACTED MITSUBISHI REGARDING WHAT COULD BE DONE, BUT THEY CLAIMED TO BE UNABLE TO HELP ME AS THE CAR WAS BEYOND THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY, DUE TO THE NUMBER OF MILES ON IT I AM ONLY FORTUNATE IN THAT THESE FAILURES DID NOT OCCUR WHILE I WAS IN MOTION, OR THE SUDDEN LOSS OF CONTROL WOULD HAVE CERTAINLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT IN WHICH I COULD HAVE BEEN SEVERELY INJURED. *JBRead more

I STARTED MY TRUCK, PUT IT IN REVERSE AND ATTEMPTED TO APPLY THE BRAKES. THERE WAS A LOUD GRINDING SOUND AND NO BRAKES--JUST A DEAD PEDAL. I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE TRUCK BY APPLYING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE--WITH ONLY INCHES TO SPARE BEFORE ROLLING THROUGH MY GARAGE. THIS IS THE MOST RECENT OCCURRENCE OF THIS INCIDENT (4/14/06). THE ISSUE INVOLVES THE SEAT BELT MECHANISMS ON MY 1993 MITSUBISHI 3000GT VR-4. THE SEAT BELTS WILL NOT RETRACT FULLY AND AT TIMES ARE SIMPLY INOPERABLE. WHEN I PURCHASED MY 1991 MITSUBISHI 3000GT VR-4 IN JUNE OF 2004. THE SEAT BELTS WOULD NOT RETRACT ON THEIR OWN AND WOULD HAVE TO BE FED BACK INTO THE REEL BY HAND. BOTH THE DRIVERS SIDE AND THE PASSENGER SIDE DO NO RETRACT. I HAVE DISASSEMBLED THE ENTIRE UNIT AND ATTEMPTED TO FREE UP AND LUBRICATE IT, BUT THE MECHANISM WAS NOT REPAIRED. STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO SHAKE AND VISIBLE FUMES BEGAN ENTERING VEHICLE THROUGH AIR VENTS. THERE WAS A STRONG STENCH OF ANTI-FREEZE. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AND VEHICLE BECAME HARD TO CONTROL. AFTER TAKING CAR TO LOCAL DEALERSHIP, I WAS IMMEDIATELY TOLD, EVEN BEFORE AN INSPECTION WAS DONE, THAT THE HEATER CORE ON VEHICLE HAD A SLOW LEAK THAT OVER THE COURSE OF "SEVERAL MONTHS" THAT EVENTUALLY LEA
... KED ON TO THE TRANSMISSION ELECTRIC BOX AND SHORTED OUT THE ENTIRE SYSTEM. IT SEEMED OBVIOUS THAT THIS WAS A FAMILIAR ISSUE WITH THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE. I WAS ORIGINALLY GIVEN AN ESTIMATE OF $3,300, BEING THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PAST ITS WARRANTY PERIOD. AFTER SEVERAL CALLS TO OWNER OF DEALERSHIP AND DOING RESEARCH ON THIS VEHICLES COMPLAINT HISTORY, THE PRICE WAS REDUCED 3 SEPARATE TIMES, FINALLY COSTING ME $880. APPARENTLY, MITSUBISHI HEADQUARTERS PICKED UP THE COST OF THE PARTS, LEAVING ME TO PAY LABOR CHARGES. THE MECHANIC HANDLING THE REPAIR STATED THAT DUE TO "POOR DESIGN" ON THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE, AND EVEN WITH OUR REGULAR MAINTENANCE CHECKS AT THE DEALERSHIP, THIS PROBLEM CANNOT POSSIBLY BE RECOGNIZED OR DIAGNOSED IN ITS EARLY STAGES UNTIL IT HAS CAUSED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. IN JAN. MY WIFE STARTED TO GET A WHIFF OF GASOLINE EVERY NOW AND THEN WHEN SHE GOT OUT OF HER 2001 MONTERO SPORT. IT WAS NOT ENOUGH TO AROUSE SUSPICION. IN THE WEEK OF 3/27/06, THE SMELL BECAME SEVERE. I FOUND GAS RUNNING DOWN THE GAS TANK, DRIPPING ONTO A HOSE RUNNING BELOW IT, AND TO THE GROUND. ... BY VACHON AND TOLD THAT THE TANK WAS ROTTED AT THE SEAM AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. I ASKED IF THIS WOULD BE UNDER WARRANTY AS THE CAR WAS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD AND HAD 44,000 MI. VACHON INFORMED ME THAT IT WOULD NOT BE UNDER WARRANTY. THE REPAIR WOULD COST $1083. I CALLED MITSUBISHI TO QUESTION THE WARRANTY AS I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A GAS TANK WEARING OUT SO QUICKLY. THEY INFORMED ME THAT IT MIGHT BE COVERED UNDER THE 7 YEAR/100,000 MILE CORROSION WARRANTY. I CONTACTED VACHON AND HAD THEM LOOK INTO IT. IT WAS DISCUSSED WITH REGIONAL MANAGEMENT AND THEY DECIDED THAT IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED, IT WOULD BE PART OF THE EXPIRED EMISSIONS WARRANTY. I AGAIN CALLED CUST. SERVICE. I TOLD THEM THAT THIS FAILURE WAS TOO FAR OUT OF SORTS TO BE OUT OF WARRANTY. GAS TANKS LAST 20 TO 40 YEARS AND THIS DECISION SHOULD BE RECONSIDERED. I WAS TOLD THAT IT WOULD BE REVIEWED. I WAS AGAIN REFUSED. I ASKED THAT A HIGHER LEVEL OF MANAGEMENT REVIEW THE CASE. I WAS TOLD THAT IT WOULD BE DONE AND SOMEONE WOULD GET BACK TO ME. 5 DAYS LATER, I CALLED BACK BECAUSE NOBODY CALLED ME. I WAS TOLD THAT THE CASE WAS REVIEWED AGAIN AND AGAIN THEY DECIDED AGAINST ME. MY CASE NEVER GOT TO A HIGHER LEVEL OF MANAGEMENT, IT WAS DECIDED BY MR. TESSMER, THE REGIONAL PARTS AND SERVICE MANAGER EVERY TIME. I ASKED IF I COULD SPEAK TO MR. TESSMER. THE ANSWER WAS NO. AT THIS POINT THE CAR IS FIXED. IT WILL COST ME $1100.06 TO PICK IT UP, MORE THAN THE PRICE QUOTE. MY WIFE AND 7 YEAR OLD HAD BEEN COMPLAINING OF FREQUENT HEADACHES.
