MITSUBISHI MONTERO SPORT, YEAR 2000 - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE LIGHT CAME ON AFTER DRIVING ~ 200 MILES AT 70 MPH. STOPPED AFTER DRIVING 20 MORE MILES. SMOKE WAS COMING FROM ENGINE COMPARTMENT NEAR TRANSMISSION. APPEARS TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS VENTING AND HITTING HOT ENGINE. ALLOWED CAR TO COOL DOWN, AS RECOMMENDED IN OWNERS MANUAL. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHEN I BEGAN HAVING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS AS WELL. I PURCHASED A USED 2003 MITSUBISHI GALANT FROM A LARGE USED-CAR DEALERSHIP. ON THE NEXT DAY, THE HORN SOUNDED OFF SPONTANEOUSLY WHILE SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY OVERNIGHT AND WOULD NOT TURN OFF, REQUIRING ME TO PULL THE FUSE IN ORDER TO STOP THE SOUND. THE USED CAR DEALERSHIP DISCUSSED THE ISSUE WITH A MITSUBISHI DEALER, WHO ADVISED THEM TO REPLACE THE HORN AND THE HORN RELAY. THEY DID SO, BUT THE

THE DEALERSHIPS COORDINATED THEIR REPAIR EFFORTS ONCE AGAIN, BUT THIS TIME THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. IT WAS DETERMINED, HOWEVER THAT A POOR GROUND CONNECTION ON THE HORN COULD BE THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. UNFORTUNATELY, JUST ONE WEEK LATER, THE HORN ONCE AGAIN WENT OFF WHILE IN THE DRIVEWAY AND CONTINUED TO BLARE UNTIL I PULLED THE FUSE. THE DEALERSHIP IS UNCERTAIN WHAT TO DO TO FIX THE INTERMITTENT PROBLEM. CLEARLY, FROM MY EXPERIENCE AND THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS I HAVE SEEN REGISTERED WITH THE NHTSA OVER THIS ISSUE, THE GALANT HAS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE WITH RESPECT TO THE FUNCTIONING OF ITS HORN ASSEMBLY. THIS REPAIR SERVICE 40 MILES AWAY AND IT TOOK 7 DAYS TO COMPLETE. HAD TO HAVE CARPET AND CAR DETAILED TO GET RID OF COOLANT SMELL. RESEARCHED ON INTERNET AND FOUND OUT THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE 1998 WITH THESE HEATER CORES WITH MITSUBISHI VERY MUCH AWARE OF IT, AND OBVIOUSLY NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO CHANGE THIS PROBLEM. THIS CAR ONLY HAS 61145 MILES ON IT AND THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THIS IRRESPONSIBILITY OR COSTS TO THE CONSUMERS OF THESE CARS,INCLUDING PROPERTY DAMAGE AS WELL AS HEALTH RISKS TO THE CONSUMERS AS COOLANT IS TOXIC TO BREATH. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 2000 BLACK MITSUBISHI GALANT. THE PAINT STARTED FADING WITHIN FOUR YEARS OF OWNING THIS VEHICLE. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP WHO ADMITTED A DEFECT IN THE PAINT ON THE 2000-2001 MITSUBISHI GALANTS. AS SUCH, THE LOCAL MITSUBISHI DEALER AGREED TO PAINT THE VEHICLE ON OR ABOUT 2005. HOWEVER, MITSUBISHI WOULD ONLY APPROVE PAINTING THE SPECIFIC

MITSUBISHI SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT REMAINDER OF THE ORIGINAL DEFECTIVE PAINT ON THE VEHICLE WOULD FADE SIMILAR TO THE AREAS ON THE HOOD AND TRUNK. I WAS NOT AWARE OF ANY LIMITS OR RESTRICTIONS BY MITSUBISHI FOR CORRECTING THE DEFECTIVE PAINT ON THE 2001 GALANT MODELS. IT IS NOT UNREASONABLE THAT A PRUDENT BUYER EXPECT FROM A REPUTABLE AND ETHICAL MANUFACTURER AN IMPLIED GUARANTEE THAT THE ORIGINAL PAINT ON THE VEHICLE WILL NOT COMPLETELY FADE AWAY AFTER 5-6 YEARS OF OWNERSHIP.
