The adjustment up and down of the vehicle's steering column regularly sticks in the full "up" position and then cannot be easily re-adjusted. I have taken the vehicle in three times for servicing of this problem and the dealer solution was to only re-lubricate bearings and gears. Finally after problem has become more acute has the Mercedes dealer agreed to replace steering column in total.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The digital dashboard (MBUX) screen that driver is dependent on, all of a sudden go blank with no access to heaters, no display, with no GPS and no dash heater. This screen is controlled by a control unit which is right under the passenger seat and is very sensitive even to few water droplets. Yes
... , the component is available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? With such a control unit that is sensitive to few water droplets, if a passenger sitting in the second row has wet shoes or shoes with snow or drops some water, can short circuit the unit and can result in blanking out the digital screen. On a cold day or during night on a highway, the digital dashboard screens all of a sudden go blank and the dash can get foggy, resulting in driving distraction and low visibility for driver. Heaters can be turned on manually but result in burning smell in the car. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, the dealer has inspected the problem and have also confirmed other customers also had similar issues. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? The vehicle has been inspected by the Mercedes Benz dealer service department (where I leased ) and they have confirmed that few water droplets have short circuited the control unit which resulted in blanking out the screen. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No messages or warning lamps or signs have been displayed prior to the failure. But we smelled something burning in the car before this happened. This appeared on Jan 9th evening 5 PM on our way from Pittsburgh to Columbus on the highway.Read more

The 2006 Mercedes Benz CLS500 was designed with a SBC braking system that uses a microcomputer to monitor the car and driver actions. The system sounds like a milestone achievement in braking technology, unfortunately its prone to failure. The entire system relies on electronics. Before long, wiring in the SBC braking system deteriorates, and suddenly the SBC system no longer functions. What ha
... ppens is all of a sudden a warning light comes on and this message all in bright red saying, ‘Brake malfunction. Ineffective braking,’” Stepping on the brake, my foot was going down to the floor pretty easily. No resistance, no brakes. The Atlantic Motor Car Center receives hundreds of phone calls per year on this issue. Imagine yourself driving along and suddenly the dash goes red and you have no brakes, Mercedes has extended the warranty on the SBC pump first to 10 years, then in 2018 to 25 years. Unfortunately, which happened to me and many others is when you take your car in to the dealer after the terrorizing experience they says they can not duplicate the problem or your car is not giving out a specific code. Although I had numerous fault codes relating to the SBC system, they informed me I did not have the code they wanted. The warranty is meant to prevent failures of the SBC system that result in no brakes. But when you take the car in they inform you it will be $3,000 dollars to replace the SBC pump. Just do some investigation on line to see what's going on. Does it take a class action lawsuit against Mercedes to get action? I can't believe that the NHTSA has not recalled these vehicles. How many accidents with people injured or killed does it take to get their attention.Read more

The wrist pin is defective in early engines during manufacturing. It is not safe to operate the vehicle because at any time without any warning this can cause fatal damage to the engine - piston crack resulting in total loss of control even at high speeds on the highway. Numerous complaints were filed on NHTSA regarding cracked pistons most likely related to this wrist pin manufacture defect. Th
... e problem is acknowledged by M-BENZ (NHTSA ID Number: 10058545), and starting around April 20 2015 M-BENZ started to install modified wrist pins to prevent future failures, but they did not address existing faulty wrist pins. The vehicle was always serviced at the official MBENZ Dealer service and was under comprehensive inspection multiple times but the issue was never acknowledged by the service technicians during the warranty period even though the issue existed since manufacturing and instruction of how to diagnose was distributed between service technicians via Manufacturer Communication Number: LI03-10P060916 in 2015. When the M-BENZ Delear service technician finally confirmed the issue, the vehicle was already out of warranty and there is a hefty price to a customer to fix this manufacturer defect that should not have been there in the first place. There are no warning lamps, messages, or other easily detectable symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The issue can be diagnosed under very special conditions described in Manufacturer Communication Number: LI03-10P060916 For most drivers, it's hard to diagnose that something is wrong and easily mistaken for normal operation noise of the engineRead more
