I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2004 LINCOLN AVIATOR. ABOUT A MONTH AFTER I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IT STARTED TO DEVELOP PROBLEMS. THE REAR BEARING SEAL FAILED AND OIL IS LEAKING OUT. THE GEAR SHIFTER ON THE CONSOLE IS STARTING TO STICK AND NOT GO INTO GEAR. I UNDERSTAND THE AVIATOR IS HAVING A LOT OF PROBLEMS IN THESE AREAS. SENT LINCOLN A DEFECT NOTICE AS REQUIRED PER FLORIDA 'S LEMON LAW AND CONTACTED THE BBB AUTO-LINE TO INITIATE OUR CLAIM. AUG 31, 2010 FINAL ATTEMPT TO REPAIR WAS DONE BY FORD. THEY STATED THEY COULD NOT VERIFY GRINDING NOISE PER THEIR ROAD TEST, BUT PROCEEDED WITH TSB 10-17-03. THIS LATEST TSB NEWLY DESIGNED BRAKE PADS WERE INSTALLED. WE DON'T LIKE BEING THEIR TEST CASE AND WE HAVE NO CONFIDENCE THAT ANOTHER SET OF BRAKE PADS REGARDLESS OF THE NEW DESIGN WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM. CURIOUS THAT THE NOISE AND VIBRATIONS OCCUR ONLY ON ONE SIDE OF THE CAR (PASSENGER RIGHT FRONT SIDE WHEEL AREA) AND FORD HAD NO ANSWER WHEN QUESTIONED. PREVIOUSLY, THE GRINDING NOISE HAS RETURNED ABOUT 60-90 DAYS AFTER THE NEW BRAKE PADS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED. OUR 1997 LINCOLN TOWN CAR THAT WAS PART OF THE DEACTIVATION SWITCH RECALL BEGAN HONKING AS THE ALARM TRIGGERED ON THE EVENING OF AUGUST 24, 2010 IN OUR GARAGE. AFTER CLEARING THE ALARM SEVERAL TIMES, I INVESTIGATED THE BATTERY VOLTAGE AND ALL WAS WELL. THE ALARM TRIGGERED AGAIN AND I CLEARED IT. AS I CLOSED THE HOOD SMOKE BEGAN TO ESCAPE NEAR THE REAR DRIVERS SIDE CORNER OF THE HOOD. I OPENED
... THE HOOD AS THE SMOKE SLOWED DOWN. THE CONNECTOR TO THE DEACTIVATION SWITCH WAS VERY WARM AND THE SWITCH HAD BRAKE FLUID ON IT. THE RECALL INSTALLED 20 AMP FUSE HAD NOT OPENED. UPON INVESTIGATION I FOUND THAT THE FUSE IN THE RECALL INSTALLED HARNESS WAS IN THE CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE SWITCH AND THE CRUISE CONTROL INSTEAD OF BETWEEN THE BATTERY AND THE SWITCH. HENCE THE FUSE PROVIDED NO PROTECTION AGAINST THE POTENTIAL FIRE. THANKFULLY I WAS STANDING THERE WHEN IT HAPPENED AND COULD DISCONNECT THE CABLE FROM THE SWITCH.
