I HAVE A 2002 FREELANDER THAT I BOUGHT NEW IN 2002. I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH IT. MOST RECENTLY THE TRUCK WAS UNDRIVEABLE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AT THE BEGINNING OF 2008 DUE TO OVERHEATING. FINALLY SAVED ENOUGH MONEY TO TAKE IT AND HAVE IT REPAIRED. HAVE DRIVEN IT FOR 5 MONTHS AND AM AGAIN LOSING COOLANT. HAVE PAID SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR REPAIRS DUE TO OVERHEATING AND OTHER ISSUE
... S OVER THE LAST YEAR. NOW, THE RIGHT REAR PASSENGER WINDOW MOTOR IS DEAD. LIKE MANY OTHERS WHO OWN THESE VEHICLES, THE TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REPLACED. THERE ARE CLUNKING NOISES WHEN IT IS PUT IN GEAR. THERE IS AN ELECTRICAL GREMLIN THAT MAKES THE REAR WINDOW GO UP AND DOWN FOR NO REASON. I HAVE HAD THE SUNROOF STUCK OPEN AND HAD THAT FIXED. THE MOTOR WAS TAPPING CONSTANTLY AND THE DEALER TOLD ME THE SOUND WAS NORMAL. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC REPAIRED THE TAPPING NOISE WHICH WAS THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. HE EXPLAINED TO ME THAT COOLANT WAS LEAKING INTO THE ENGINE'S CYLINDERS, AND THAT IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THE ENGINE WOULD STOP WORKING AND BE WORTHLESS. HE TOLD ME THAT CHANGING THE HEAD GASKET WOULD NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM ANYWAY, THAT IT IS THE RESULT OF A SEVERE ENGINEERING FLAW THAT THE LAND ROVER CORPORATION HAS BEEN AWARE OF FOR SEVERAL YEARS. IT SEEMS THAT THE ENGINE BLOCK, WHILE MADE OF ALUMINUM, HAS CYLINDER SLEEVES THAT ARE MADE OF STEEL. SINCE METALS EXPAND WITH HEAT AND DIFFERENT METALS HAVE MAJOR DIFFERENCES IN THEIR METALLURGIC PROPERTIES, WHAT EVENTUALLY HAPPENS IS THAT THE SLEEVES DISJOIN FROM THE ENGINE BLOCK AND BEGIN TO SLIP AND SLIDE IN PLACE, SOMETHING NO ENGINE SHOULD DO REGARDLESS OF THE MILEAGE ON IT. ONCE THE SLEEVES MOVE, THEY BEND AND SOON AFTER BREAK THE HEAD GASKET, WHICH ALLOWS COOLANT TO ENTER THE CYLINDERS, WHICH CAUSES THE ENGINE TO RUN VERY ERRATICALLY UNTIL IT STOPS RUNNING ALTOGETHER. NO PROBLEMS OBSERVED WITH THE CAR. SUDDENLY THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME LOOSE AND FELL DOWN TO A POSITION WHERE THE BOTTOM OF THE WHEEL WAS STUCK BETWEEN MY LEGS. THE TILT MECHANISM FAILED WHILE THE CAR WAS THE MOVING AND THE WHEEL, ALTHOUGH ATTACHED TO THE CAR, WAS FORCED DOWN ONTO MY LEGS. STEERING WHEEL WOULD NO LONGER STAY IN A DRIVABLE POSITION WITHOUT $1300 REPLACEMENT OF STEERING COLUMN.
