DRIVING ON THE MAIN HWY WHEN I NOTICED THAT A INDICATED LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD "TRANSMISSION FAULT TRACTION REDUCED". THE CAR DIDN'T HANDLE ANY DIFFERENT SO I IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED THE DEALER VIA PHONE. SPOKE TO THE SERVICE ADVISER WHO STATED TO PULL OFF THE ROAD, TURN OFF THE MOTOR AND AFTER A FEW MINS RESTART IT AND THAT SHOULD CLEAR THE FAULT. IF NOT, JUST MAKE AN APPT FOR SERVICE.

WHEN THE MECHANICS GOT AROUND TO INSPECTING THE CAR, THEY SAID THAT A CONNECTING ROD HAD BROKEN INSIDE THE MOTOR AND PUNCHED A HOLE THROUGH THE BOTTOM-SIDE OF THE BLOCK, WHICH IS PROBABLY WHY I HEARD THAT METAL-TICKING NOISE AND ALSO WHY LIQUID, OR MOTOR OIL, BEGAN SPILLING OUT THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE. THE MECHANICS SAID THAT THIS TYPE OF ISSUE COULD BE CAUSE BY NOT HAVING ENOUGH OIL IN THE MOTOR AND CAN ALSO BE DUE TO THE ENGINE'S AGE. I OWN A 2008 LR2 AND JUST RECEIVED CONFIRMATION FROM THE LOCAL DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL HAS FAILED AND IS THE SOURCE OF THE WIDELY REPORTED LOW PITCHED REAR HUM. THIS NOISE FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE STARTED AROUND 66,000 MILES (CURRENT MILEAGE 74,600). THE QUOTED PRICE FOR THE REPAIR ' 5 HRS + PARTS, $3,000+. FORTUNATELY I HAD THE DEFECT DIAGNOSED BEFORE A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE THAT COULD HAVE POTENTIALLY RESULTED IN EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE AND/OR INJURY TO PASSENGERS. AS I HAVE SUBSEQUENTLY DISCOVERED AS I WAS GIVING APPROVAL TO ORDER THE NEW DIFFERENTIAL, THE PART HAS BEEN RE-DESIGNED SIX TIMES.
