REAR DOOR LATCHING MECHANISM FAILURE. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE REAR DOOR LATCH STICKING AND NOT OPENING TO CATCH THE REAR DOOR. WHEN THE DOOR IS CLOSED IT EITHER BOUNCES BACK BECAUSE THE LATCH IS STUCK IN A CLOSED POSITION OR CLOSES BUT IS NOT SECURE. AS I WAS DRIVING UP THE ROAD AND TURNING ONTO A TWO LANE HIGHWAY THE REAR DOOR VIOLENTLY FLEW OPEN CAUSING THE HINGE TO DEFORM AND SUBSEQUEN

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC SHOP, WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE BOTTOM OF THE FUEL TANK WAS CORRODED. THE PRIVATE MECHANIC SHOP WAS ABLE TO REPAIR THE FUEL TANK. WHILE DRIVING MY 1993 LAND ROVER NAS DEFENDER 110 TO AN APPOINTMENT, I NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT COMPLETELY FILLED UP WITH SMOKE MAKING VISIBILITY POSSIBLE ONLY OUT THE OPEN DRIVER'S WINDOW. UPON OPENING THE HOOD, FLAMES POURED OUT. THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WAS ABLAZE. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHUT OFF, DESPITE THE IGNITION HAVING BEEN SHUT OFF
... AND THE KEY HAVING BEEN REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE ONLY WAY TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF WAS TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY. THE FIRE WAS BURNING THE AC EQUIPMENT AND ENCLOSURE, VEHICLE WIRING AND HOOD, FENDERS, ETC. THE VEHICLE SUFFERED DESTROYED WIRING HARNESSES, THE ENGINE, THE ENTIRE AC UNIT, HOOD AND VARIOUS OTHER BODY PARTS, RESULTING IN A TOTAL LOSS. SOME PARTS ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE WAS A PIN HOLE LEAK IN ONE OF THE OIL COOLER LINES. THE LEAK SPRAYS A FINE MIST OF HOT ENGINE OIL DIRECTLY ON THE HOT EXHAUST MANIFOLD. THE RESULT IS AN OIL-FUELED ENGINE FIRE. NOT BEING ABLE TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF KEEPS OIL SPRAYING ON THE HOT EXHAUST MANIFOLD, CONTINUING THE FIRE. I HAVE COME TO FIND OUT A LARGE NUMBER OF DEFENDER 110'S HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM. WHEN THE LINES RUPTURE, THE EFFECT IS SUDDEN AND CATASTROPHIC IS NO WARNING. LAND ROVER OFFERS NO RECOMMENDED SCHEDULE FOR CHECKING OR REPLACING THESE LINES. IN FACT, LAND ROVER WILL NOT DISCUSS THE ISSUE SAYING THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED. LAND ROVER'S ONLY ASSISTANCE WAS TO POINT ME TO A THIRD-PARTY THAT SELLS LAND ROVER PARTS. THE SAME CATASTROPHIC PROBLEM, ALTHOUGH IN LESSER NUMBERS, HAS OCCURRED ON DEFENDER 90'S AS WELL. LAND ROVER DISCOVERY'S, MANUFACTURED IN THE TENS OF THOUSANDS, ALSO UTILIZE THE SAME ENGINE. AS THE VEHICLES AGE, AND WITHOUT ANY MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE FOR CHECKING/REPLACING THESE LINES, COULD IT BE ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THESE FIRES BECOME MUCH MORE COMMON? THIS IS MORE OF A GENERAL COMPLAINT REGARDING A MODEL TYPE, AS IT HAS COME TO MY ATTENTION THAT THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF INCIDENTS OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS THAT ARE NOT BEING ACKNOWLEDGED BY THE MANUFACTURER. THE INVOLVED VEHICLES ARE THE 1993 LAND ROVER DEFENDER-110, AND THE 1994-95 LAND ROVER DEFENDER-90. IT HAS BEEN FILTERING AROUND MOST ENTHUSIAST GROUPS THAT THESE TRUCKS ARE SUFFERING S

THESE ALL SEEM TO OCCUR ON THE FRONT RIGHT SIDE OF THE ENGINE BAY, SPREAD RAPIDLY, AND ENTER THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT WITHIN A SHORT TIME FRAME. NO COLLISIONS ARE INVOLVED IN THESE FIRES, THE GENERAL CONSENSUS IS THAT THE FIRES ARE MOST LIKELY CAUSED BY FAILING PRESSURIZED HOSES THAT ARE PART OF THE OIL COOLING SYSTEM. THE HOSES HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO SPLIT WITHOUT WARNING AND BECAUSE OF THEIR LOCATION WILL SPRAY FINELY MISTED ENGINE OIL ONTO THE RIGHT SIDE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. ANOTHER SUSPECTED CAUSE IS FROM THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM, WHICH IS ALSO LOCATED IN THE SAME AREA. THERE APPEARS TO BE ISSUES WITH THE MATERIALS USED IN THE OIL COOLER HOSES, AS A NUMBER OF LOW MILEAGE REPLACEMENTS HAVE ALSO FAILED WITH NO PRIOR SIGNS OF WEAKNESS OR DEGRADATION. I DRIVE PRIMARY BACK AND FORTH TO WORK, WHICH IS NO MORE THAN 15-20 MILES EACH WAY, SO I FEEL THAT THE BRAKING SYSTEM FOR THE FREELANDER WAS DESIGNED IMPROPERLY AND THE COMPANY SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE. I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2003 RANGE ROVER. AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FROM THE DEALERS LOT TO MY HOME, I DECIDED TO TAKE MY FIANCE FOR A DRIVE. I DROVE DOWN A FAIRLY BUSY HIGHWAY WHICH IS LESS THAN ONE MILE FROM MY HOME. AS I PROCEEDED DOWN THE HIGHWAY, I ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE AND THE VEHICLE MADE A LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND BECAME IMMOBILE. THE POLICE SHOWED UP AND CALLED A TOW TRUCK SO THAT I COULD GET OFF OF THE BUSY HIGHWAY. I CALLED THE CAR DEALERSHIP AND THEY WERE CONCERNED THAT I HAD JUST PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AND THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL EUROPEAN MECHANIC SHOP AND THE MECHANIC INDICATED THAT THE TRANSFER CASE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. I WAS SHOCKED AS TO WHY THIS HAPPENED, SINCE THE VEHICLE APPEARED TO BE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND THE DEALER IS A REPUTABLE BUSINESS. THE QUOTE FOR THIS WORK IS $5000 AND I WAS ASKED BY THE DEALER IF I COULD COME UP WITH A PORTION COST FOR THE REPAIRS. SINCE THE INCIDENT, I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS VEHICLE AND THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON INCIDENT AMONG OTHER RANGE ROVER OWNERS OF MODELS 2002 THROUGH 2006. AS WE CONTINUED TO DO RESEARCH ABOUT OUR SOFTWARE PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET, WE WERE ASTONISHED TO FIND OUT THAT THE ENGINE OF THE LR3 V6 IS A FORD 4.0 & NOT A BMW MOTOR AS THEY USED TO BE. THE MAIN REASON WE BOUGHT THIS CAR WAS BECAUSE OF THE BMW MOTOR THE CAR WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE. NO ONE AT THE DEALER EVER TOLD US THAT THE LR3 V6 WAS A FORD MOTOR & THE V8 WAS A JAGUAR MOTOR EVENTHOUGH WE ASKED SEVERAL TIMES THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE LR3 V6 & V8. UNTIL NOW THE ENGINE LIGHT WARNING KEEPS COMING ON & OFF & ALSO THE BURNING SMELL COMES OUT OF THE VENTS. THE DEALER DOES NOT HAVE A FIX FOR OUR PROBLEM YET. IN JAN. 2006 WE BOUGHT A LAND ROVER LR3 LS, A MONTH AFTER WE BOUGHT THE CAR WE BEGUN HAVING PROBLEMS. THE ENGINE LIGHT WARNING LIGHTED UP A COUPLE OF TIMES. THE ENGINE LIGHT WARNING LIGHTED UP & THERE WAS A BURNING SMELL COMING FROM THE AIR VENTS AS WELL. WE CALLED THE DEALER & THEY SAID NOT TO WORRY THAT IT COULD WAIT, WE INSISTED & FINALLY THEY ALLOWED US TO BRING THE CAR INTO THE DEALER. ALL

THEY SAID WAS THAT THE COMPRESSOR WAS DIRTY & THAT'S WHY A BURNING SMELL CAME OUT OF THE VENTS & THE ENGINE LIGHT WARNING WAS NOW OFF & IT WOULD COME BACK ON BECAUSE THIS WAS A SOFTWARE PROBLEM THAT THEY HAD BECOME AWARE OF & THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT RIGHT NOW. THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT CAME BACK THAT SAME DAY. WE ARE AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR & NOT BEING SURE OF IT JUST BEING BECAUSE OF THE SOFTWARE PROBLEM OR IF THERE IS SOMETHING REALLY WRONG WITH THE CAR. WE WENT TO THE DEALER 3 DIFFERENT TIMES, FIRST HAVE THE CAR CHECKED, SECOND SPEAK WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER & THIRD WITH THE GENERAL MANAGER. ALL THREE VISITS WE GOT THE SAME ANSWER A SOFTWARE PROBLEM & NO SOLUTION. IT WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHERE THE AIR SUSPENSION WAS RECALIBRATED.
