OUR 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER BEGAN TO OVER HEAT AT 63,216 MILES. WE WERE LUCKY IN THAT WE WERE AT A DRIVE THROUGH NEAR OUR HOUSE. WE TOOK THE CAR HOME RIGHT AWAY. UPON GETTING AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER, THE CAR WAS TAKEN IN FOR INSPECTION. THE LONG BLOCK NEEDED REPLACING. THIS WAS DUE TO THE FACT THAT A CYLINDER SLEEVE HAD SLIPPED. ... R DISCUSSION WITH THE DEALER, IT SEEMS TO BE KNOWN THAT THE ENGINE WILL FAIL. THIS DEALER HAS HAD OWNERS COME IN FOR THEIR 3RD MOTOR ALL WITHIN THE WARRANTY. THE LIFE EXPECTANCY SEEMS TO BE BETWEEN 30,000 AND ABOUT 65,000 MILES. WE ARE LUCKY THAT WE WERE NOT ANYWHERE FAR AWAY OR MY WIFE WAS ON BUSINESS. THE VARIABLE INTAKE MOTORS HAD FAILED 15,000 MILES /12 MONTHS BEFORE AND WERE REPLACED DURING THE LONG BLOCK REPLACEMENT. AFTER ALL REPAIRS WERE COMPLETED THE CAR WAS TAKEN HOME. THE NEXT DAY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE FOLLOWING DAY I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT. DURING THE DRIVE TO THE DEALER, THE SAME POWER PROBLEMS WERE PRESENT. THIS MADE DRIVING THIS CAR DANGEROUS IN THAT THERE WAS NO WAY TO KNOW IF IT WOULD ACCELERATE. THE DEALER THEN DETERMINED THAT THE AIR INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET HAD CRACKED. I PURCHASED 4 GOODYEAR EAGLE LS TIRES IN SEPT (LAST YEAR). AFTER 2000 MILES, I BLEW OUT THE SIDEWALL. WHEN GETTING IT REPAIRED, THE SHOP SAID 2 OF THE REMAINING TIRES SHOWED BULGES INDICATING POSSIBLE FUTURE FAILURE OF THE SIDEWALL. THEY BLAMED IT ON POTHOLES AND WOULD NOT REPLACE THEM. *JB

I WAS PROCEEDING EASTBOUND ON 580 IN SAN LEANDRO AT ABOUT 70 MPH AND HEARD AN ABRUPT GRINDING SOUND AND THEN LOST ACCELERATION. THE ENGINE WAS STILL WORKING BUT COULD NOT GET ANY TORQUE. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO THE EMERGENCY LANE AS IT DECELERATED. ONCE THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP IT WOULD NOT MOVE AGAIN. THE GEARS WOULD NOT ENGAGE WITHOUT THE GRINDING SOUND. *NM

I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC WHO LOOKED IT OVER AND WAS PUZZLED. HE COULDN'T SEE WHERE THE COOLANT HAD GONE AND SUGGESTED I BRING THE CAR TO MY LOCAL LAND ROVER DEALER IN NEW ROCHELLE. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO LAND ROVER AND TH
... E TECHNICIANS THERE FIXED THE SO-CALLED PROBLEM. THE TECHNICIANS INFORMED ME THAT A CRACKED RESERVOIR AND A MALFUNCTIONING FAN WERE FOUND. 5,000 MILES LATER (NOW THAT THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED) THE CAR BEGINS TO OVERHEAT. I WENT AHEAD AND HAD THE THERMOSTAT REPLACED BY MY LOCAL MECHANIC WITH A LAND ROVER THERMOSTAT (WHERE WAS I TO TOW MY CAR AT 9 PM?) , 2 WEEKS LATER IT OVERHEATED AGAIN. I TOOK IT THE DEALERSHIP ONCE AGAIN. THEY TOLD ME THAT COOLANT HAD LEAKED INTO THE ENGINE AND THAT I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. 6,800 DOLLARS. A 3 YEAR OLD CAR NEEDS A NEW ENGINE? I'VE BEEN NOTIFIED BY LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA THAT THEY WILL NOT COMPENSATE ANY OF THE MONEY BECAUSE THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED WITH THE FREELANDER. A BUSINESS ASSOCIATE OF MINE LEASED A 2003 FREELANDER FROM LAND ROVER PARAMUS AND AT 48,000 MILES THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED. THERE'S AN APPARENT PROBLEM WITH THE HEAD GASKET WITH THE FREELANDER. IT'S ALL OVER THE WEB ! EVERY FREELANDER SUFFERS FROM THE SAME PROBLEM. I BELIEVE I SHOULD NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR A DEFECTIVE ENGINE AND THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE TOTALLY RESPONSIBLE. IN DEC '05 I HAD THE RIGHT REAR WINDOW OF A 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER FAIL TO OPERATE. IT WAS TWO DAYS BEFORE THE WARRANTY EXPIRED, AND COVERED. IN NOVEMBER '06 THE LEFT REAR WINDOW FAILED TO OPERATE. THE VEHICLE ON HAS 43K MILES BUT IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY DUE TO YEARS. BOTH WERE A RESULT OF A POOR CABLE OPERATING SYSTEM, AND IS A KNOWN COMMON PROBLEM ACCORDING TO THE LAND ROVER DEALER. *JB
