LAST SUNDAY, I WAS TRAVELING IN THE 2005 RANGE ROVERON AN INTERSTATE 100 MILES FROM MY HOME. THE TRANSISSION SUDDENLY FAILED & I HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER NEAR MY HOME. ON MONDAY I SOPKE TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT TOLD ME THE PROBLEM WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING AT THE CAR THERE WAS A DEFECT IN THE ORIGINAL DESIGN OF THE LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL, AND THEY WERE ORDERING THE PART AND RENTING ME A CAR.

WE HAVE CHANGED THE OIL FAITHFULLY EVERY 3,000 MILES AND HAD THE NECESSARY SERVICES DONE AND WERE AT 44,724 MILES. WE WERE DRIVING HOME FROM VT A MONTH AGO AND THE OIL LIGHT WENT ON. WHEN WE ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGER ABOUT THAT, HE SAID THAT IF IT WAS A FAULTY OIL PUMP IT WOULD HAVE BLOWN BY 20,000 MILES AND NOT GONE TO 44,000 MILES. WE SENT THEM DOCUMENTATION OF ALL THE SERVICES WE HAVE HAD DONE ON THE CAR AND THEY AGREED TO PAY FOR HALF OF THE COST OF THE ENGINE. VEHICLE'S ENGINE HAD HEAD GASKET FAILURE AS SO MANY HAVE. THIS RESULTED IN ANTI-FREEZE LEAKING INTO THE OIL. SUBSEQUENTLY, THE LOWER BEARINGS FAILED AND THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE TECH ADVISORY IN QUESTION STATES THAT, "...THE ONLY EFFECTIVE REPAIR CURRENTLY AVAILABLE IS REPLACEMENT OF THE COMPLETE ENGINE..." SO, I WAS SURPRISED WHEN LR CONTACTED ME WITHIN A FEW HOURS TO TELL ME THAT MY VEHICLE WOULD BE READY FOR PICK UP THE NEXT DAY. I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO RETRIEVE THE CAR UNDER PROTEST (THEY DID NOT INITIALLY PROVIDE A LOANER, AND ONLY PROVIDED A RENTAL AFTER MORE THAN 24 HOURS) AND EVEN WHEN I PRESENTED THE TA TO THEM, THEY REFUSED TO, OR WERE UNABLE TO, SHOW ME THAT THE REPAIRS THEY MADE SUPERSEDED THOSE INDICATED IN LRNA'S OWN DOCUMENTATION ON THIS ISSUE. I CONTACTED THE OWNER OF THE FRANCHISE -- THEY DID NOT RETURN MY CALLS. I WROTE A LETTER TO THEM. I WROTE A LETTER TO LRNA AND CALLED THE CORPORATE HQ SEVERAL TIMES. MY 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY RECEIVED ITS SCHEDULED 60K SERVICE THEN AT 65K THE OIL PUMP FAILED AND CAUSED A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE ENGINE. ALTHOUGH THERE ARE SEVERAL DOCUMENTED CASES SIMILAR TO MINE LAND ROVER DOES NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY OR PLAN TO RECALL. WITHOUT ANY WARNING, I STARTED TO HEAR A "METAL-ON-METAL" LOUD GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE WHILE IT WAS MOVING FORWARD, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED OR WHETHER IT WAS IN DRIVE OR NEUTRAL. PREVIOUSLY, LAND ROVER HAD INSPECTED THIS FRONT DRIVE SHAFT AND DIFFERENTIAL UNDER A LAND ROVER TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN, TO PREVENT THE DRIVE SHAFT AND DIFFERENTIAL FAILURE. THIS OCCURRED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS UNDER WARRANTY. WHEN THE FAILURE ULTIMATELY OCCURRED, THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE DRIVEN AND IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. COST TO FIX BY THE DEALERSHIP WAS $2,700. THE DEALERSHIP AND LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA (INCLUDING APPEALS BOARD) REFUSED TO PROVIDE OUT OF WARRANTY ASSISTANCE EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE ALL WELL-AWARE OF THIS SYSTEMATIC FAILURE FOR 2003 RANGE ROVERS. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE STREET, THE TRANSMISSION SEEMED TO SLIP. I SCHEDULED A SERVICE APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER WHOM STATED THAT THE CAR COULD STILL BE USED. AS TIME WENT BY, THE FAILURE BECAME WORSE, UP TO THE POINT THAT YOU COULD NOT DEPEND ON THE TRANSMISSION TO WORK SAFELY. WE DECIDED TO PARK THE CAR AND WAIT FOR THE DAY OF SERVICE. THE REPAIR SHOP DID ADMIT THAT LAND ROVER WAS AWARE OF DEFECTIVE UNITS, BUT DID NOT MAKE THIS PUBLIC.
