Upon reaching a slow-down traffic ahead, the brakes were applied to slow the vehicle, however the cruise control did not disengage and the brakes did not stop the vehicle. We saw an opening in between the stopped vehicles and crossed over from right to left lane into the grassy median, hit a ditch, and did a sharp turn into opposing traffic, almost hitting another vehicle as they moved out of way, and stopped the vehicle on the opposite side of the road. When the vehicle hit the ditch crossing the median, the right front tire popped and helped in stopping the vehicle. Four family members including myself were in the vehicle and there were several cars already stopped in the lanes. This incident caused great safety concerns for my family and the vehicles around us. Had we hit the cars while crossing over, it would have caused a chain reaction of "hits" as the cars were already lined up and stopped. We brought the car to the Jeep dealership and they did confirm that the internal valve body failure and TCM fault contributed to improper communication within the transmission. They did replace the TCM and valve body assembly, reprogrammed the module and road tested the vehicle. The auto stop/start warning light came on after the incident. They performed a battery test for the main and auxiliary, and both failed load test and read at low voltages. Both batteries were replaced and fault codes cleared. Per Hyundai's GDI service protocols and Recall 180, that pipe is a one-time-use safety component that should not be reused during an engine swap due to fire risk. Since it is leaking now, it’s clear the old pipe was reused and has failed. I'm asked for a goodwill replacement because this was a procedural error during the 2023 warranty work and was denied. The fuel tank shield has rusted completely through exposing the tank to damage, puncture, etc. The reason this problem occurs is because of a process called galvanic corrosion. The fuel tank shield is bolted onto an aluminum heat shield, and the pairing of these two different metals accelerates the corrosion. I turned on my right blinker and turned a bit to the right and rolled forward to gain visibility to my left as I came to a complete stop. There was a car coming from the left that was preparing to turn left. I observed that car turn on its left blinker, and slow down while entering
... its turn. I confirmed the intersection was clear and there was nothing in front of me. I applied the gas, then looked left to confirm the other car was completing its left turn. While I was slowly accelerating, but before my eyes returned to the road ahead of me, the accident avoidance system sounded an audible alarm, I think I recall seeing an orange dash warning, and the system seemed to simultaneously trigger a hard brake apply. This was akin to a panic stop. I knew there was a truck approaching behind me. Although a bit stunned and dazed, I recovered as quickly as I could, and continued to complete my right turn to make sure that vehicle did not collide with me. The hard brake apply was so sudden, my head and body pitched forward (as much as permitted by the seat belt). After returning home, I realized my right shoulder was sore, presumably from the brake apply. I worry that this system could trigger the brakes like this at a much higher speed, in a turn, or with my children driving the car (they are just [XXX] and [XXX] old). I have since reached out to the dealership that I purchased the car from for assistance (LaFontaine Honda in Dearborn, MI). I just bought the car (used) last Friday, 5/1. I am a technical project manager that has supported automotive brake development projects for multiple companies and customers for 26 years. I know how these systems are supposed to work, and this one seems flawed, and potentially dangerous in my opinion. I would be happy to discuss further if NHTSA has questions. The car had no warning signs showing. We were on the highway and this was the longest trip we’ve taken in this car. We were at about 100 miles into the trip, we were at mile 115 on I-95 in [XXX] coming from [XXX] .
