I PURCHASED A NEW 2006 KAWASAKI VUCAN MOTORCYCLE IN 9/05. SINCE THE FIRST DAY, THE CLUTCH GRABS AND JERKS THE BIKE ON EVERY COLD STARTUP. RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET SHOWS THIS HAS HAPPENED TO OTHER OWNERS. ONE OWNER INFORMED ME IT CAUSED HIM TO FALL AND BREAK A BONE. THE MANUFACTURER AND DEALERS I HAVE CONTACTED INFORM ME THAT I WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR IF IT IS DETERMINE

IT IS CLEAR FROM MY RESEARCH THAT THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT, AND THE MANUFACTURER AND DEALERS INFORM ME THAT EVEN UNDER WARRANTY, I WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIR UNLESS AND UNTIL THE MANUFACTURER ISSUES A RECALL. JANUARY 4 I ALMOST FELL AS A RESULT OF THIS DEFECT. WHEN I LEAVE FROM WORK I HAVE TO IMMEDIATELY TURN INTO THE LANE OF TRAFFIC AS THE CLUTCH IS SLIPPING. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION. ONE OWNER SHOWS A DIAGRAM WHERE A SERIES OF HOLES DRILLED INTO THE CLUTCH BASKET ALLOWS OIL TO SPREAD OVER THE CLUTCH FAST ENOUGH ON COLD STARTUP TO ELIMINATE THIS PROBLEM. EVERYONE EXCEPT NARROW SHOULDERED WOMEN FINDS MIRRORS USELESS. REPLACED MIRRORS WITH BUELL CONVEX MIRRORS. PROBLEMS SOLVED. THE THIRD STALL EVENT OCCURRED AFTER THE ENGINE HAD BEEN RUNNING FOR AT LEAST 1 HOUR (FULLY WARM). ON A FREEWAY EXIT, I PULLED IN THE CLUTCH AT ABOUT 50 MPH IN ORDER TO DOWNSHIFT. THE ENGINE DID NOT RETURN TO IDLE, BUT IMMEDIATELY STALLED AT THAT SPEED. THE ODOMETER HAD APPROXIMATELY 500 MILES AT THIS TIME. THE FOURTH TIME WAS NOV 28, 2006. AS I EXITED A FREEWAY, I APPROACHED A STOP SIGN, ABOUT 1 MILE FROM THE EXIT. AS I PULLED IN THE CLUTCH TO DOWNSHIFT TO 2ND GEAR NEAR THE STOP SIGN, THE ENGINE STALLED. THE ODOMETER HAD ABOUT 930 MILES WHEN THIS OCCURRED. I AM FILING THIS REPORT BECAUSE I BELIEVE IT IS VERY POSSIBLE THAT IT IS NOT JUST A COMPONENT DEFECT WITH MY MOTORCYCLE ONLY. I HAVE CHECKED INTERNET SITES PERTAINING TO THE VULCAN 900 AND FOUND THAT OTHER OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME OR SIMILAR STALLING PROBLEM WITH THEIR MOTORCYCLES. THIS MOTORCYCLE MODEL ALSO CONTAINS A NEW ENGINE AND FUEL INJECTION DESIGN, JUST INTRODUCED AS OF THE 2006 MODEL YEAR. THEREFORE, I BELIEVE IT MAY BE A FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM DESIGN DEFECT OR OTHER SOFTWARE/HARDWARE DESIGN DEFECT IN THE ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM, RATHER THAN JUST AN ISOLATED COMPONENT FAILURE IN NEED OF REPAIR. KAWASAKI'S UNLIMITED MILEAGE WARRANTY IS A RIPOFF! I OWN A 2003 KAWASAKI NOMAD MOTORCYCLE WITH 170,345 MILES ON THE ODOMETER AND MY EXTENDED "UNLIMITED MILEAGE" WARRANTY EXPIRES ON 8/19/2008. ON 9-25-06, I NOTICED A MAJOR OIL LEAK COMING FROM A HOLE IN THE LEFT SIDE #1 CYLINDER SPARK PLUG SLEEVE. ON 9-27-06, I TOOK MY BIKE (BY TRAILER) TO MY DEALER IN ORDER TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. ... WAS NOTIFIED BY MY DEALER (WHO WAS EAGER TO REPAIR THE BIKE) THAT KAWASAKI WOULD NOT AUTHORIZE WARRANTY WORK TO BE DONE BECAUSE OF NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. ON 10-16-06, I CALLED KAWASAKI CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS TOLD THAT BECAUSE OF THE HIGH MILEAGE ON MY BIKE, KAWASAKI WOULD NOT AUTHORIZE THE REPAIR UNDER WARRANTY DUE TO WEAR AND DETERIORATION OCCASIONED BY USE OF THE PRODUCT. THE OIL LEAK WAS CAUSED BY A DEFECT IN THE DESIGN OF THE AUTOMATIC CAM CHAIN TENSIONERS WHICH ALLOWED THE CAM CHAIN OVER TIME TO STRETCH AND RUB A HOLE IN THE SPARK PLUG SLEEVE. IF THE CAM CHAIN WERE TO BREAK, THIS COULD CAUSE THE MOTOR TO SIEZE AND CAUSE INJURY TO THE RIDER. I HAVE DISCOVERED THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH MOST KAWASAKI ENGINES AND ONE KAWASAKI SHOULD BE AWARE OF. IN FACT, KAWASAKI OF CANADA HAS A CAM CHAIN TENSIONER EXTENDER (PART #92027-1500-DE) THAT CORRECTS THIS PROBLEM, YET KAWASAKI USA HAS NO SUCH PART. WHY IS THIS? FURTHERMORE, I ASKED WHY KAWASAKI MOTORS REPAIRED MY BIKE IN MARCH 2006 FOR A WORN OUT STATOR, IN JUNE 2006 FOR WORN OUT WHEEL BEARINGS AND FORK SEALS AND IN AUGUST 2006 FOR A WORN OUT U-JOINT AND DRIVE SHAFT; ALL UNDER THE "UNLIMITED MILEAGE" WARRANTY. THEY AGAIN HAD NO ANSWER. WELL, I THINK I KNOW THE ANSWER: M-O-N-E-Y! IN ORDER TO FIX THE OIL LEAK, KAWASAKI WOULD HAVE TO REMOVE THE ENGINE FROM THE FRAME, REPLACE CAM CHAINS, SPARK PLUG SLEEVES, GASKETS, ETC. ETC. GAS LEAK AT TOP OF TANK AROUND FILLER NECK. LEAK REMAINS UNTIL TANK IS ONLY 1/4-1/3 FULL. SEEMS TO COME FROM VENT HOLE ON RIGHT SIDE OF FILLER, UNDER CAP. THIS LEAK MAY HAVE RUINED THE PAINT FINISH AS WELL. *JB

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 65MPH, THERE WAS A WHINING NOISE EMITTING FROM THE MOTORCYCLE FOLLOWED BY SMOKE. THE CONTACT MANAGED TO PULL OVER AND EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. THE FIRE ERUPTED FROM THE TRANSFER CASE AND DRIVE TRAIN. UPON INITIAL INSPECTION, THE FIRE WAS SUSPECTED TO BE ELECTRICAL IN NATURE DUE TO DAMAGE SUSTAINED TO THE WIRING. THE MOTORCYCLE WAS NOT SEEN BY A DEALER.

I OWN A 1999 KAWASAKI 1500 DRIFTER MOTORCYCLE THAT I BOUGHT NEW FROM G&G CYCLES, 142 LAFAYETTE ROAD, SALISBURY, MA, 01952. SINCE IT WAS NEW THE TURN SIGNAL WOULD COME ON WHEN I STARTED THE MOTORCYCLE. THE DEALER HAD NO SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM WHEN I POINTED OUT THAT IT CREATED A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE, IF I FAILED TO TURN IT OFF BEFORE DRIVING, IT WOULD SIGNAL OTHER DRIVERS THAT I WAS TURNING WHEN
... I WAS NOT IN FACT GOING TO DO SO, MAKING THEM TAKE DANGEROUS ACTION. IN THE LAST SEASON OF USING THE MOTORCYCLE THE PROBLEM WORSENED. NOW THE TURN SIGNALS WILL WORK FOR ONLY SEVERAL FLASHES AND THEN THEY BLOW THE MAIN FUSE FOR THE TURN SIGNALS RENDERING THEM INOPERATIVE, AGAIN, A SAFETY ISSUE. THE DEALER TELLS ME THAT THERE IS NO WAY THAT THEY CAN FIX IT ASIDE FROM TRYING TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE ELECTRONICS ON THE MOTORCYCLE. THIS ALSO RENDERS THE MOTORCYCLE UNABLE TO PASS A SAFETY INSPECTION AND THEREFORE, INOPERABLE ON PUBLIC ROADS. I WOULD LIKE THE DEALER TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS ORIGINAL DEFECT AND FIX MY MOTORCYCLE. I AM USING AN INCIDENT DATE THAT COINCIDES WITH THE FIRST TIME, AT PURCHASE, THAT I NOTICED THE PROBLEM.
