I recently purchased a used Jayco Precept 31 UL motorhome that is on a Ford F53 chassis. After the purchase I found that the vehicle handled very dangerously when being passed by a large trucks, or when there were crosswinds or medium strength winds. The problem was bad enough the I narrowly avoided accidents caused by being pushed around by passing 18 wheel trucks or crosswinds, or both. After
... doing some research on this vehicle, and others on the Ford F53 chassis I found that these handling issues are the number one problem with these units. I subsequently had to invest over $6K to correct these handling problems as they were the result of the ineffective stock suspension configuration from the factory. I had to install a steering stabilizer (Safe-T-Plus), a rear track bar (SuperSteer), front radius rods (SuperSteer), new special damping shocks (Koni FSD shocks) and an adjustable drag link (unsure of the manufacturer). All these modifications collectively changed the handling of the RV from a huge safety hazard to a well heeled and safe handling vehicle. These changes should have been included as standard safety equipment directly from the factory. It is incomprehensible to me that a vehicle of this size should be allowed to be leave the factory and be on the road with such dangerous handling issues. If you do the research you will find many owners of these units who struggle with the same issues and who have had many near misses or accidents on the road as a result. Recreation Vehicles built on the Ford F53 chassis need to be highly regulated and inspected to ensure that they leave the factory with the safest configuration of suspension, chassis and steering equipment available. These vehicles should all be placed under a recall to have the manufacturer(s) install, at their expense, the handling modification I outlined above.Read more

In January 2021, while traveling at approximately 65 miles per hour on a Chicago area tollroad, my motor home suddenly began violently bouncing up and down in the rear. I immediately began to slow and move to the shoulder, at which time I observed the outside left dual wheel separate from the vehicle and roll into the dividing median wall. I managed to get to the shoulder on the remaining wheel,
... which was also damaged beyond repair. After towing and repair, the total cost was approximately $3200. The technician was unable to determine why the wheel had suddenly broken loose. In August 2021, while traveling at approximately 60 miles per hour on an Illinois Interstate highway, I felt the right rear drop as though a tire had suddenly lost air. I immediately moved to the shoulder and, before I could come to a complete stop, observed the outside right dual wheel separate from the vehicle and stop on the shoulder. Again, the remaining wheel was damaged beyond repair. After towing and repair, the total cost was approximately $2100. Again, the technician (at a different repair facility) was unable to determine why the wheel had suddenly come loose but did mention the fact that he believed the wrong type lug nuts may have been used. These were the same lug nuts that had been on the vehicle since purchase. I have always been diligent in maintaining proper air pressure in my tires, consistently inspected them for wear and damage, and made every attempt to ensure they would not be a problem. After the first occurrence on the left side, I had the right side removed and inspected by the repair facility in Chicago and again by my local tire shop when I arrived home. Since the first occurrence, every time I stop for gas I perform a visual inspection of all tires and manually check all lug nuts to ensure they are not loose. I am curious if this has been reported previously or why this may keep happening. It is both quite frightening and dangerous.Read more

The authorized dealer diagnostic inspection and estimate of repair supports the lack of engineering standards. Issue 2. The on-board generator system fuel lines are routed over the top of the chassis lead-acid batteries. This is not logical, safe or prudent.
