THERE EXISTS A CONDITION WITH THE SECONDARY TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER IN 2000 JAGUAR XJ8, VANDEN PLAS, OR XK8 MODELS THAT CAN AND DOES LEAD TO CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE. TO DATE JAGUAR DOES NOT ADMIT THAT THIS IS A SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW AND SAFETY ISSUE. THERE ARE NO RECALLS OR EVEN A SERVICE BULLETIN ON THIS HOWEVER FAILURES ARE DOCUMENTED ON THE JAGUAR CLUB OF NORTH AMERICA AND POSSIBLY OTHERS HAVE
... BEEN QUIETLY FIXED BY JAGUAR. THIS PLASTIC TENSIONER CAN FAIL UPON START-UP, AS IT DID IN MY CASE, OR IN THE WORST SCENARIO IT CAN HAPPEN AT SPEED. THE PLASTIC HOUSING OF THE TENSIONER SIMPLY FAILS RESULTING IN THE TIMING BELT BREAKING AND OR JUMPING OFF. WITHOUT ANY WARNING THE RESULT AT SPEED IS SUDDEN AND COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE, WHICH CAN LEAD TO AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITION. AT STARTUP THE RESULT IS THE INABILITY TO START THE ENGINE STRANDING THE DRIVER WHEREVER THE CAR HAS STOPPED. IN MY CASE THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON STARTUP, BREAKING THE TIMING CHAIN, AND RESULTING IN A $2000 REPAIR. THE CAR WAS A 2000 VANDEN PLAS, VIN [XXX], WITH 42,067 MILES AND FAILED WITHOUT ANY PREVIOUS NOISE OR INDICATION. UPON ENGINE TEAR DOWN TO REPAIR THERE WAS NO APPARENT SIGN OF EXCESSIVE WEAR OR ANY OIL SLUDGE. THE FAILED TENSIONER PLASTIC HOUSING SIMPLY BROKE. THE OTHER GOOD TENSIONER HAD A CLEARLY VISIBLE CRACK IN THE PLASTIC HOUSING AND INDEED WOULD HAVE ALSO FAILED. I HAVE THE FAILED PARTS. REPLACED WAS: SECONDARY CHAIN, BOTH CHAIN TENSIONERS, BOSS SEAL, 2 TIMING SEALS, AND 2 CAM GASKETS. (FAILURE AT SPEED REQUIRES COMPLETE ENGINE REPLACEMENT.) THE REPAIRS WERE MADE UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY ON ALL OCCASIONS. THE FIRST TIME I TOOK IT IN THE MILEAGE WAS 39,860 (FEB 28, 2002) - THE SECOND TIME MILEAGE WAS 44,898 (DEC 3, 2002) AND THE LAST TIME IT WAS 46,746 (MARCH 24, 2003). THE SERVICE WRITERS AT THE DEALERSHIP WERE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND HAVE SEEN IT ON SEVERAL OTHER VEHICLES. THE DEALERSHIP (BAUER JAGUAR) INSTITUTED A FIX (SEE BELOW) WHICH IS NOT FACTORY APPROVED THAT APPEARS TO HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM. MY CONCERN IS THIS COULD CAUSE ACCIDENTS AND POSSIBLE DEATHS TO OTHER OWNERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T HAD THE "FIX" PERFORMED ON THEIR CARS. THE PROBLEM AS THE SERVICE WRITER EXPLAINED TO ME, IS DUE TO THE THROTTLE BODY GOING INTO A "SELF CLEANING" MODE WHILE THE CAR IS OPERATING. THIS "SELF CLEANING" MODE MEANS THE THROTTLE PLATE CLOSES WHICH SHUTS-OFF AIR TO THE ENGINE, CAUSING ENGINE SHUTDOWN. THE ENGINE WILL STALL RANDOMLY. THIS HAPPENS AT LOW SPEED OR WHEN I STOP AT AN INTERSECTION. IT HAS ALSO STALLED WHEN MAKING A TURN AND NARROWLY AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT. IT ONLY HAPPENS RANDOMLY AND THERE IS NO PATTERN TO WHEN IT WILL HAPPEN.

MY NAME IS [XXX]. MY HUSBAND [XXX] AND I OWN A 2002 JAGUAR X-TYPE 2.5. IN OCTOBEROF 2003, I PARKED IN A COMMERCIAL PARKING LOT WHILE I ATTENDED AN APPOINTMENT. WHEN I RETURNED TO THE VEHICLE AFTER MY APPOINTMENT, I FOUND THAT THE CAR HAS ROLLED BACK INTO 2 OTHER VEHICLES THAT WERE PARKED BEHIND IT. THERE WAS DAMAGE DONE TO ALL THREE VEHICLES INVOLVED. ... ERS OF THE VEHICLES THAT WERE INVOLVED THAT MY HANDBRAKE WAS FULLY ENGAGED. NOBODY COULD BELIEVE THAT THE VEHICLE COULD HAVE ROLLED BACK. THE INCIDENT HAPPENED ON A COMMERCIAL PARKING LOT, AND EVEN THOUGH A POLICE OFFICER ATTENDED THE SCENE, HE WOULD NOT MAKE A WRITTEN REPORT AS IT HAPPENED ON PRIVATE PROPERTY. I CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP (GAUDIN JAGUAR - LAS VEGAS, NV) AND BROUGHT MY VEHICLE TO BE LOOKED AT, THEY INDICATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE HANDBRAKE. I INDICATED AT THAT TIME THAT I DID NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING AND PARKING THE VEHICLE AS THE HANDBRAKE HAD TO BE FAULTY AS IT SHOULD NOT ROLL BACK WHEN ENGAGED. I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP UNHAPPY WITH THE SERVICE THAT I RECEIVED FROM THE DEALERSHIP. I WENT THROUGH MY INSURANCE AND HAD TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY EVEN THOUGH I WAS NOT IN THE VEHICLE WHEN THE ALTERCATION HAPPENED AND EVEN THOUGH THE BRAKE WAS WITNESSED BY ALL PARTIES. I WILL HAVE AN INCREASED INSURANCE PREMIUM FOR SOMETHING THAT I BELIEVE NOT TO BE THOUGH ANY FAULT OF MY OWN. I HAVE GONE TO JAGUAR HEAD OFFICE AND AFTER MUCH CONFUSION ON THEIR CUSTOMER VICE REP, THEY CLAIM THAT THERE ISN'T AN ISSUE AND THAT THEY ONLY DEAL WITH INSURANCE COMPANIES. MY INSURANCE COMPANY WILL ONLY CONTACT THEM IF A COMPLETE RECALL IS MADE. I HAVE ONLY FOUND ONE OTHER PERSON WHO TOOK THEIR VEHICLE INTO THEIR DEALER (JAGUAR NORTHAMPTON) AND THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM.
